The Kingdom Of David

The kingdom of David, c. 1000 to 970 B.C.

The kingdom of Israel reached the height of its military and political power under David. The larger kingdoms in the Ancient East were at their nadir, leaving a vacuum in the western part of the “Fertile Crescent.” In David, Israel found a brilliant and far-sighted military and political leader, able to exploit the prevailing situation. Following the encounter with Aram-zobah, Israel became the major power in Syria and Palestine. The extent of the Israelite empire under David and Solomon is revealed by the passage concerning Solomon: “For he had dominion over all the region west of the Euphrates from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings west of the Euphrates” (1 Kings 4:24). In the Hebrew, “west of the Euphrates” is “the other side of the river,” the name used by the peoples of Mesopotamia for this area. Thus the influence of David and Solomon spread from Tiphsah on the Great Bend of the Euphrates to Philistine Gaza on the southern border of the Land of Canaan.
