Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
On my iMac G3/500 Early 2001, when I try to boot the installer for OS X Public Beta I get a kernel panic.
I have tried resetting the PRAM, downloading from BetaArchive, WinWorldPC, etc. I have used imgburn and InfraRecorder and the same error still occurs. On imgburn the disc verifies successfully. The MD5 hash for the file is correct as well. Am I doing something wrong here? Could the drive in my iMac be messed up? I'm not sure what the problem is.

Is your system's hardware clock set back far enough? It has to be set back before September 2001 in order to run.
Re: Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
Set to 3/13/2001 and it still panics. It could be that the battery is dead, but the system is plugged in with ample power so that shouldn't be a problem...James wrote:Is your system's hardware clock set back far enough? It has to be set back before September 2001 in order to run.
Edit: I don't believe it's a hardware issue as it runs Mac OS 9.2 just fine

Re: Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
Hmm. I was able to run the Public Beta on my iMac G3 a couple of years ago, and the battery dying shouldn't cause this because when it dies, it resets the date to 1969.
Since the picture's a bit blurry, here is my guess of what's the Kernel Panic code:
I'll do a bit of looking around...

I tried using TransMac to burn the dmg, but it won't let me use it as a startup disc on the Mac. hmm.
Re: Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
Actually, as far as I'm aware, the kernel itself is not timebombed. What's actually timebombed is the GUI, so this kernel panic is unrelated to the expiry.James wrote:Is your system's hardware clock set back far enough? It has to be set back before September 2001 in order to run.
Windows Defender for great justice! Bugs are an international trading company. I need to defeat the anti-debugging and obfuscation methods. It wasn't for Intel's absurd ability to load in ie6. Why even waste time with people in an envelope?
Re: Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
I wonder what's causing this error though? I'm using CD-R discs, so there shouldn't be any problems with reading. I believe I have installed the public beta on this computer before even (a few years ago). What could be causing this?Wheatley wrote:Actually, as far as I'm aware, the kernel itself is not timebombed. I got it to try to boot in verbose mode, and it still kernel panics.

Re: Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
Could you try out the final version of OS X 10.0?
Re: Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
I've installed OS 9.2.1, 9.2.2 and Tiger and they all worked fine. I just would like to try out this version on this computer.Windows OS wrote:Could you try out the final version of OS X 10.0?
Re: Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
That's your problem right there. The Public Beta won't run on that, it's too new. Use pre-2001 or older hardware (New World, obviously) to run the Mac OS X Public Beta.lhn555 wrote:On my iMac G3/500 Early 2001,
Re: Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
Alright, I figured it just wouldn't boot to it like the other developer previews. In the app it didn't say it wasn't compatible like the others. Thanks:) My mistake... lol//Dan wrote:That's your problem right there. The Public Beta won't run on that, it's too new. Re: Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
Might it be the hardware isn't capable for Mac OS X Public Beta to run perhaps? I used a PowerMac G4 to run Mac OS X Public Beta and it worked pretty well. Try using a PowerMac G4 and tell me if it works or not. If it doesn't work, my last guess is either the DVD and/or how you burned it, or the DVD image file your getting it from is corrupt.
Re: Mac OS X 10.0 Public Beta Kernel Panic
I had the same problem when I booted with 1.25 GB of RAM in my iMac G4. Try pulling any additional memory out carefully, until you have under 512 MB. I was able to get Kodiak to boot on 384 MB. And yes, the system clock should be set back before January 2001.
