I work with historical societies and foundations to craft lively, scrupulously researched, serious non-fiction narratives. Though born to write, I was not a natural-born writer! It took a Harvard MBA and three decades as an advertising and promotion executive in the cola wars (Pepsico Inc.), the beer wars (Anheuser Busch Companies), and the toothpaste wars (Colgate Palmolive Company), to learn the difference between ideas and words. But my true calling came later, as founding President of a Connecticut historical society and a hands-on historian. A fascination with our Society's new home, the circa 1714 David Scott House, led to my first book: "THE FARMS OF FARMINGVILLE," a paean to the architectural and social history of 23 Connecticut farmhouses. Next came five years in the field as a re-enactor in the 5th Connecticut Regiment of the Continental Line that produced "FARMERS AGAINST THE CROWN." Its the story of General Benedict Arnold's shining hour against redcoat forces thrice his size in Western Connecticut during April of 1777. As the great (times three) grandson of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall, I partnered with Richmond, Virginia's John Marshall Foundation to publish "CONGRESS AS MY GOVERNMENT." Its the definitive account of Marshall's youthful exploits as an infantry officer in George Washington's Continental Army. This summer, America's oldest continuously running press, Ben Franklin's American Philosophical Society (est. 1743), launched my latest book. Eight years in the making, "JOHN LAURANCE . . .The Immigrant Founding Father America Never Knew" is the first complete biography of the only foreign-born citizen ever to rise within two heartbeats of the presidency. Laurance reminds readers that our nation's founding was a pluralistic rather than singular experience. And that rule of law, not a handful of iconic "Fathers" is the true founding legacy.
