On May 1, the Empire State Building will put on a spectacular light show to honor the opening of the Whitney Museum of American Art’s new downtown New York location. Interpreting 12 works in the Whitney’s collection, including pieces by Jasper Johns, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Andy Warhol, lightning designer Marc Brickman has created a dazzling program that will illuminate the top of the tower from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Visitors to the new Whitney, designed by architect Renzo Piano, will be able to observe the show from the museum’s four eastern terraces, which feature stunning views of both the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center.
