Reiner Kinizia
About the Author

Reiner Knizia was born in 1957 and lives in Munich, Germany. He holds a PhD in Mathematics and has published numerous games in Germany and abroad. Among his greatest successes are winning the 'Deutscher Spielepreis' (German Game Prize) in 1993, 1998, 2000, and 2003, and the 'Spiel des Jahres' (Game of the Year) for 'Keltis,' which is based on 'Lost Cities.' Reiner Knizia specializes in games that offer simple rules and a lot of freedom of decision.

What do you get?

The game board consists of hexagonal spaces on which players lay their tiles. All 120 tiles, each shaped like two hexagons stuck together along one edge, remain in a drawstring bag until they are selected by players to replenish their stash of six tiles that they keep on their tile rack, hidden from their opponents' view. Scoring boards and pegs keep track of each player's progress as the board fills with tiles.

How to play

At the start of the game, each player draws six tiles from the bag. The tiles have different colored symbols on them (six different symbols total). Players take turns placing tiles one at a time onto the game board to create lines of identical symbols. Earn points by counting the number of identical symbols originating from the placed tile and radiating outward in straight lines; players earn separate points for each of the six colors. At the end of the game (when the game board is completely filled with tiles), the final scores for each player are determined: a player's final score is the point value of their lowest scoring color. The player with the highest low score wins!

Why you'll like it

Easy to learn, Ingenious is simple, fun, and addictive! Fans of pattern building and tile placement games will find a lot to love in this entertaining strategy game that leaves little to chance. From acclaimed game designer Reiner Knizia, Ingenious is a perfect game for all ages; it is one of those rare games that appeals to serious gamers and casual 'non-gamers' alike.

Game Variants

The manual offers instructions for a four-player partnership game, allowing players to work in teams to pool their individual points. There's also a solitaire game option: fill up the game board with tiles and try to reach the highest low score. This variant is useful for players who want to get some practice before taking on an opponent.

I love the game but am very upset about the damaged box. All of my games are in perfect condition except this one. The game board came in the amazon white bag. When I normally buy games they come in a box and they never come damaged.

Each of our family members enjoys different types of games, but Ingenious is one we all love to play. Easy to set up and explain, we pull this out when we want to get straight to playing. It is surprising to see who ends up winning, which has been our 7 year old on more than one occasion!
This edition features plastic tiles and a peg board for keeping track. While I miss the wooden cubes, this new system prevents the inevitable loss of where one is at on their scoreboard when you would bump the cubes from their places. Personally, I would love to see a tray in which the wooden cubes are set in and held in place. But this peg system definitely works better than the original.

Ingenious may not have fancy artwork or amazing mechs, but the simple (and yet strategic) gameplay has you forget about that. It is great fun for experienced and new gamers alike. 5 stars!

This game is easy to learn and fun. Game is sturdy and well made. I taught my grandkids to play it 6 and 8 years old, we were laughing in no time. We had several good evenings of fun with them. It doesn't stop there, adults can have fun and play a tougher game with thought and serious strategy. So you don't want to debate about politics but need something to do together? Here you go have fun outsmarting other players and drinking if you like. Have fun playing, we do. =)

The game is part dominos and part Scrabble. The rules are easy to understand. The tiles are sturdy, for plastic, and the storage pouch is very nice. The game can be played on a few levels, although it’s not in the same league as chess. My 7-year old granddaughter figured out the strategy quickly. I was continually distracted by the desire to work a puzzle. A pleasant family pastime; even the 3-year old could play puzzle style.

My family has played this game for years. It is an excellent game for families interested in something with less randomness than a dice rolling game without a lot of complexity. This was the game we would always go to when introducing new friends to board games, and would play often just for fun.

This game is pretty fun and well made. All the pieces seem solid and they are made out of plastic. The concept of the game is great, I’ve seen a few with the same idea but this one sets itself apart with replay ability. I’ve only played the 3 player version so far but it was very fun and I look forward to playing the 1 person “solitaire” version next.

The designer of this game has created many great games. It's odd to see a game that has no real thematic element is his portfolio. This game looks like a scrabble-type of game. How tough can that be? Well, looks can be deceiving. You can explain this game in a matter of minutes but once you start playing and seeing how your opponents' pieces change the ever-growing board landscape, things get a little "sticky".
The scoring element is interesting - you need to monitor ALL of your scores, not just a few. Your final score is actually the lowest of the six different scores that you will keep track of throughout the game.

Clever opponents will see what color you need to improve and might start to cut that color off by blocking it from the board. So, there are several things that you have to watch out for as you place tiles "scrabble style" and draw new ones each turn.

This is not a filler game. It can take upwards of 45 minutes with 4 players. But it's fun when you play a strategy game with a short rule set and no theme to distract you from what is ultimately going on. It's a great change of pace from many games out there today. I highly recommend it!

We were looking for a game that could be played outdoors without the wind blowing cards/pieces. This one fit the bill and we were delighted to see that it was so much fun to play! Our first round was a bit of a disaster as the instructions are not super detailed but we were able to figure things out and from the second time on we've been doing well and enjoying it tons!

I played this with my kids (ages 4, 10, and 12). We all enjoyed the game but all of us had issues with the components used in the game. First off, the box only included 3 tile racks rather than 4. The worst part of the game though is the scoring grid that each player uses. It's cardboard with holes in it which you insert pegs to keep score. The holes are way too tight though which makes inserting the tiny pegs very difficult for everyone that played. There has to be a better system for this score card. We returned our game for a refund.
