Annie Leibovitz Hardcover – August 2, 2022

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 110 ratings

When Benedikt Taschen asked the most important portrait photographer working today, Annie Leibovitz, to collect her pictures in a SUMO-sized book, she was intrigued by the challenge. The project took several years to develop and when it was finally published in 2014, it weighed in at 26 kg (57 pounds).

This incredible collection is now available in an accessible XXL book format.

Leibovitz drew on more than 40 years of work, starting with the photojournalism she did for Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s through the conceptual portraits she made for Vanity Fair and Vogue. She selected iconic images—such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono entwined in a last embrace—as well as portraits that had rarely, if ever, been seen before.

The Annie Leibovitz SUMO covered political and cultural history, from
Queen Elizabeth II and Richard Nixon to Laurie Anderson and Lady Gaga.

“What I had thought of initially as a simple process of imagining what looked good big, what photographs would work in a large format, became something else,” Leibovitz says.
“The book is very personal, but the narrative is told through popular culture. It’s not arranged chronologically and it’s not a retrospective. It’s more like a roller coaster.”

Fans of Leibovitz and her many celebrated subjects can now enjoy that same roller coaster ride for themselves with this unlimited edition.

The photographer

Annie Leibovitz is one of the most influential photographers of our time. She began working as a photojournalist for Rolling Stone in 1970 while she was still a student at the San Francisco Art Institute. By 1983, when she left Rolling Stone for the revived Vanity Fair, she was already closely identified with the conceptual, theatrical style that is her hallmark. In subsequent decades, at Vanity Fair and Vogue and in independent projects, she has worked across many photographic genres and developed a large body of work—portraits of actors, directors, writers, musicians, athletes, and political and business figures, as well as fashion photographs—that expanded her collective portrait of contemporary life. She has published several books and has exhibited widely. She is a Commandeur in the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and has been designated a Living Legend by the U.S. Library of Congress.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“There are many art books containing essential photography of Annie Leibovitz. All of them are beaten by the so-called SUMO volume, published by TASCHEN in 2014 and now released once again in an XXL-Edition.” ― Rolling Stone

“The books are me. It’s the opportunity to take the work that I’ve done with the magazines and distill it and give it its real meaning.” ―
Annie Leibovitz

“The book serves as a reminder not only of Leibovitz’s undisputed talent, but also of the service she has done for us in documenting so flawlessly the most important moments and people of the past three generations.” ―
Artnet

“You can have talent, but it can go away and you need to feed it. You need to take care of it and you need to find ways to inspire yourself.” ―
Annie Leibovitz

“A photo album of American culture.” ―
The Independent

“It’s the closest thing to seeing the world through Annie’s extraordinary eyes.” ―

This book is HUGE
(first off, sorry for the poor photos, I just quickly took some on my bed - Olympus E-M5 Mark III in the first pic to give a sense of size)Wow, I did NOT expect this book to be this big and this heavy. It's gigantic and weighs 13 pounds!! It comes with a lovely slipcase too. There are like 550 pages, and the photos are exquisite. My only gripe is that I hate photos that span multiple pages when the book isn't a lay flat. As a photographer myself, I'd never print a book with my photos across two pages like that. But these aren't my photos, so I won't argue with her decision.Great addition to the book collection for anyone who loves photography.

I love its heft. 500+ pages of Annie Leibovitz's work.

I think James Garner was not credited in a photo of actors from Westerns.

In my opinion, the only major bummer is - and it's possible i missed it - I do not see any of the photos from the Marie Antoinette shoot. That is still my favorite work of Annie's.

Gift item to a curated artist of Fine Art Photography. She had the prior 2 books.
She loved this gift so much. It is a visual pleasure throughout and presented in a proper heavy hardback book nestled inside a designer hard top sleeve.

A priceless treasure!
Impressive book in every way. The scale of the images makes the immersion reach is absolute.
A juicy adventure radiates from every photo, every detail, every fragment.
Everything is vital, whether in the center or on the edges, even where the light doesn't show them so much. And what a quality! A pleasant chance to experience all layers of time and ontological characters in their magnificent expressions. Of course, only she has this unfailing sensitivity in capturing them. And I believe that because she is like that, she created a great story in her own story.

Been eyeing the original sumo version for years but it's way out of my budget (7k new). Snapped this one up when I saw they have a smaller (but still good size) replica. The slipcase corners were crumpled in the first shipment so I returned it for a replacement. This is a heavy book and amazon needs to provide better packaging to prevent damage.

This is a fabulous coffee table book! It frigging HUGE and sumptuous and is the best of the best of Annie Leibovitz. If your a fan you'll love it - if your not yet a fan, you will be!

An incredible anthology of Leibovitz's work. Really incredible, but the book is so large that it's hard to handle. If you were to get just one book, I might recommend he book "Wonderland". I have both, there's a ton of overlap between they two, but after owning them for months, I prefer Wonderland to this one, mostly because it's far easier to manage. But if super huge books are your thing, get it. It's great.

This is by far the biggest book I own. Its a coffee table book that when opened is bigger than the coffee table. Not even joking....
The images are superb many of which are pull outs and the paper quality is fantastic.
Shop around though...I got mine from Germany for £30 with 20 quid postage....saving myself 70 quid.
Get in son....😎😎
