Fergie Opens Up About What It Takes to Make a Marriage Work

1/5Although her group, the Black Eyed Peas, released albums in 2009 and 2010 and performed at the 2011 Super Bowl, it's been eight years since The Dutchess, Fergie's last solo album, which sold 3.9 million copies. "Did I feel some sort of pressure to come back out?" she says. Yes, in fact she did. "I felt that it was either going to be another baby or an album," she acknowledges.

2/5Fergie's single, "L.A.Love," was a source of controversy. The appropriation, for instance, of Los Angeles Hispanic culture in the video riled some. Her inclusion in the video of the un-hip-hop (Ryan Seacrest, Chelsea Handler, and Hilary Swank, among others) raised lots of eyebrows. Fergie has a solemn reply to any criticism she received: She's doing the best she can. Moreover, she adds, "I don't read everything. I just figure with all my stuff, some people are going to like it; some people aren't. It's a lot easier for me to just say, 'Fuck it' now!"

3/5For this look, the cover image, makeup artist Dotti was inspired by Jerry Hall. She warmed Fergie's skin with bronzer and pink blush, filled in her brows, coated her lashes with black mascara, and swiped on sheer gold lipstick. It can be re-created with Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara in Soft Brown, FaceStudio Blush in Nude, and Color Sensational lip color in Glistening Amber, all by Maybelline New York. For Fergie's hair, hairstylist Serge Normant added bounce and volume with a variation on pin curls: He started with a curling iron, then pinned up the curls for extra hold. Once the hair was cool, he let it down and brushed it all out.

4/5Fergie posed for a family portrait with her husband, actor Josh Duhamel, and Axl Jack. The couple met in 2004 on the set of Las Vegas, Duhamel's mid-2000s television series, shortly after he had told a reporter that he'd had a vivid dream about her. Not an entirely innocent dream, either. "Yeah, yeah, exactly—he wanted to get in my pants," Fergie recalls, amused. But things evolved after the first hot moments. "We just grew. And we grew into realizing that we wanted the same things in life. We wanted the same path. We both come from Catholic families." Seven years ago, Duhamel asked Fergie's father for her hand, and they married.

5/5But nothing comes easy, least of all marriage. The couple has embraced therapy, which they both attend. Her husband, Fergie points out, is "not afraid.... He doesn't feel like he's not man enough" for therapeutic help. Equally significant: The grueling tours required in the music industry aren't lonesome for either of them. "My husband and I made a two-week rule," meaning that's the maximum time on the road alone. "We've already talked about how we're going to have to trade off," she explains. "He's going to have to come on tour with Axl for a while, and then there'll be a break. He'll take a job; I'll be on set with [Axl]. You know?"
