RIO DE JANIERO - With a win over Spain in a first-round doubles match, Phoenix tennis player Bethanie Mattek-Sands created another mark in the win column for Arizona Olympians and Team USA.
Mattek-Sands and her partner, Coco Vandeweghe, beat Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues and Arantxa Parra-Santonja in decisive fashion.
Mattek-Sands and Vandeweghe scored 62 total points compared to Spain's 32 -- winning both sets 6-1.
The Phoenix native is no newbie to the doubles court. Mattek-Sands has won two Grand Slam women's doubles and two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. She finished 2015 ranked in the top 3 in the world for doubles.
On the singles court, Serena Williams won her first-round match in straight sets.
Serena and her sister, Venus, play the Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova in women's doubles Sunday.
