View of hampstead heath - green grass and trees with London in the background

Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath is like a little bit of countryside in a major capital city.  It is huge – 800 acres of open space and Parliament Hill, at 98 metres, is one of the highest points in London.

This gives you breathtaking views – the buildings of the City, the Shard, St Paul’s, the ‘Gherkin’, Canary Wharf and as far as the Olympic Park at Stratford.  Further round you can see the London Eye and the Crystal Palace antenna, as well as the BT Tower and the Roundhouse.

‘You can lose yourself and feel as if you’re in the countryside, and then you can look up and see this massive sprawling metropolis just above the trees.  It’s the contrast that’s so unusual: man and nature, development and unspoiled land so close together.’

Shami Chakrabarti worked with VocalEyes describer Eleanor Margolies on the description of Hampstead Heath for London Beyond Sight (2012)
