Rebecca Hall will topline a Broadway revival of American expressionist play “Machinal” at the Roundabout Theater Company, where the show will be directed by Brit helmer Lyndsey Turner.
Sophie Treadwell’s play hasn’t appeared on the Rialto since it bowed there in 1928 in a staging that co-starred Clark Gable prior to his film career. A 1993 London revival from the Royal National Theater starred Fiona Shaw and Ciaran Hinds among a cast helmed by Stephen Daldry.
In the Roundabout incarnation, Hall will play the central character, Young Woman, in the story of a woman who marries her boss but only finds happiness in an affair with another man. Plot is based on a real-life case of a woman who murdered her husband.
Hall (“Iron Man 3,” “The Town”) makes her Main Stem debut in “Machinal,” but she’s appeared onstage in Gotham in Bridge Project productions of “The Winter’s Tale” and “The Cherry Orchard” as well as a separate staging of “As You Like It,” all at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
“Machinal” begins previews Dec. 20 ahead of a Jan. 16 opening at the Roundabout’s American Airlines Theater. It joins a season lineup at the Gotham nonprofit that also includes Rialto revivals of “The Winslow Boy,” “Dinner with Friends” and “The Real Thing,” alongside new plays “Bad Jews” and “Cutie and Bear.”
