Vancouver’s Granville Street to see changes after council vote

Vancouver City Council has voted to take a deep dive into problems facing the Granville Entertainment District, and come up with ways to revitalize it.

Few details are available at this point outside of the initial report, but the city says the new plan will be pedestrian-focused and will aim to improve safety.

“The proposed planning program focuses on supporting economic stimulus and cultural revitalization for the area, including new opportunities related to entertainment and live performance, dining and tourism, retail and office space, and limited rental and below market rental housing opportunities in appropriate locations, while balancing the need to preserve the area’s unique heritage character,” read a Dec. 14, 2022 report on the plan.

The city plans to work with community partners to come up with how the space can change. Broad areas it will look at include transit, safety, hotel development, and zoning.

A final report should be delivered to council by the third quarter of next year.
