Common Uses of Cobblestones Within Landscapes, Part 1

There are several rock types that show incredibly versatile potential usage within an outdoor landscape, and cobblestones (also called cobble rock) are a great example. You might see such stones used in a variety of landscape areas, whether as accents to a larger hardscape design or as the primary design themselves.

At Utah Landscaping Rock, we’re proud to offer a wide selection of quality landscape rocks, from decorative boulders to our gray cobble rocks, South Town cobble and other forms of cobblestone. We’ve assisted clients with numerous landscaping jobs involving our cobble rocks, whether in small quantities or as the major defining element of the landscape. This two-part blog will go over several of the common uses found for cobble rocks among landscapers and gardeners, including a few you may not have considered previously.

Patio Themes

There are two distinct themes that might involve cobblestones when it comes to your home’s patio:

  • Construction: In many cases, cobblestones are used as part or all of the primary construction process for a patio, using mortar and other techniques to create a strong, durable material that’s also highly aesthetically pleasing.
  • Decorative accents: In other cases, the patio itself will already have been built using another material. However, cobblestones are still often used in these settings, integrated in with other natural stones to add texture, flare and a bit of an accent to the primary patio material.

Walkways

Cobble rocks are also ideal selections for walkways, and the primary reason for this is their ability to hold up against high levels of foot traffic. This speaks to their textured finish, which achieves a perfect combination of walking safety and aesthetic value.

Cobble rocks can easily be angled during placement if you’re looking to improve the design features of the walkway. They will keep grass out of the areas it isn’t supposed to be in, plus serve as a great edging format for any pathway you need to carve in the landscape.

Water Features

There are also several landscaping water features where cobblestones are highly valuable and common, from smaller fountains or streams to in-ground pools, waterfalls and other larger undertakings. This begins with safety, actually: Cobble rocks offer better traction than most for those walking on potentially slippery surfaces.

There are also several potential design benefits involved here. Natural stones can be used for edging, connecting water with the surrounding landscape to make the entire area flow perfectly. Cobbles are often perfect accents for these features if they aren’t part of the primary design, as well.
