The city of Belo Horizonte is situated in south-eastern Brazil, in the state of Minas Gerais. It is the capital and the largest city of the state, covering an area of 331 km2 with a population of approximately 2.7 million people, making it the sixth-most populous city in the country.

Belo Horizonte was one of the first planned cities in Brazil and was designed in a grid pattern with a focus on orderly growth and development. The planning of the city, with street blocks inspired by Paris and architecturally by New York, started in the late 19th century and it was officially founded on December 12, 1897. Belo Horizonte is also home to one of the largest collections of world-famous architect Oscar Niemeyer works, including some of his earliest designs.  In 2016, the Pampulha Modern Ensemble, designed by Niemeyer in collaboration with landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, Brazilian Modernist artists, and engineer Joaquim Cardozo was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The City of Belo Horizonte has been actively implementing various initiatives aimed at achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on areas such as climate change, poverty reduction, food security, improving health and well-being for residents and sustainable mobility.

In 2019, Belo Horizonte was designated a UNESCO Creative City in Gastronomy. This recognition highlights the city's dedication to promoting sustainable culinary practices, cultural preservation, and gastronomy-driven urban development.
