Today we will learn the new root “noc” or “nox” . Basically, it means “hurt“.

For example, the word “noxious“, consisting of “nox” = hurt, and “ious” = adj. , of which the meaning is :

“Something, especially a gas or other substance, that is noxious is poisonous or very harmful.” (Cambridge Dictionary)

Similarly, one could see the same rule in word “innocuous“.

Innocuous :

  • in. = not
  • noc. = hurt
  • innocuous: not hurtful

So, the definition of “innocuous” is :

completely harmless” (Cambridge Dictionary)

Here’s an example of “innocuous” :

i.e. Some mushrooms look innocuous but are in fact poisonous.

Now it’s your time to figure out the meanings of the following words!

pernicious= per-[thoroughly] + nic-[noc,hurt] + -ious[adj.]

innocent= in-[not] + -noc[hurt] + -ent[adj.]
