This can happen from having sex, wiping your bottom from back to front after going to the toilet, urinary catheters, kidney stones, being pregnant, enlarged prostate gland in men, menopause, diabetes and/or a weakened immune system.

Pain, burning or stinging when you pee
Needing to pee more often and urgently than usual
Pee that's dark, cloudy or strong smelling
Pain low down in your tummy

For women, a distinct fishy odor could be caused by bacterial vaginosis (BV). This fishy smell comes from the vaginal discharge which is usually grayish-white, thin, and watery in this condition. Bacterial vaginosis is usually not serious, but you should see your doctor for proper treatment if you have it. According to health experts, you will need to be treated with antibiotics.

Sweet or fruity-smelling urine is often a sign that there is too much sugar in your urine. This could be a sign of uncontrolled diabetes, as per health experts.

Dehydration can also lead to smelly urine. Amber-colored urine can also indicate dehydration. Even consuming foods like garlic, asparagus, and coffee can cause urine to smell. Bad smell in the urine caused by such factors often goes away on its own. However, it is recommended to see your doctor if you notice any such unusual changes in your urine color or smell.
