Brandon Routh Will Play Superman Once Again For Upcoming CW Arrowverse 'Crisis' Crossover [Comic-Con]

At the time, it seemed like a no-brainer. Director Bryan Singer was coming off the critical and commercial success of two ‘X-Men’ films and was offered the chance to “reboot” the world’s most famous superhero, Superman. Of course, if you’re actor Brandon Routh, you jump at the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Christopher Reeve and don the blue and red spandex. Yet, “Superman Returns” was far from a hit with fans and critics and quickly cratered any chance of Routh portraying the character in the future. But now, 13 years later, Routh is getting the chance to put on the costume one more time and playing Superman. Albeit, not on the big screen.

Deadline is reporting that Routh will portray Clark Kent, aka Superman, in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover titled “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” Now, if you’re a fan of CW’s crop of superhero shows, you may be a bit confused due to the fact that Routh is already part of the universe, but not as Superman. Routh is best known to Arrowverse folks as playing Ray Palmer, aka The Atom, in various TV series. Well, this is exactly why people are excited by the upcoming ‘Crisis.’

“Crisis on Infinite Earths” is based on the legendary DC comics crossover event from decades ago that saw the various heroes of different universes banding together to defeat an all-powerful villain. The series, essentially, was a marketing gimmick that aimed to take the convoluted DC multiverse and streamline it into one universe, with all the heroes. And when you’re talking multiverses, that’s when you can play with various versions of heroes. Thus, Brandon Routh’s Clark Kent.

But Routh isn’t the only actor that’s going to portray Superman in the crossover. Tyler Hoechlin, who has already played Clark Kent and Supes in the Arrowverse, will be on hand to ALSO play the character. Will they meet? While it’s not confirmed, it would be too good of an opportunity to pass up for CW.

“Crisis on Infinite Earths” is a storyline that will span five episodes beginning in December on CW. The series is expected to include just about every character you can imagine from the Arrowverse, along with some new ones (of course). And thankfully, it doesn’t appear that Bryan Singer is anywhere near it.
