Boyle’s "Greasy Lake"

Writer discussed: T.C. Boyle’s “Greasy Lake”

So I know we’re plowing ahead on the grammar ideas, but I still want you to keep up with the readings on the syllabus because you will have another essay based on those stories.

Rebellion seems to go hand in hand with being a teenager, and thus a common theme in literature. Why is it “good to be bad,” and what are the characters in “Greasy Lake” rebelling against? What are they looking for at the lake, and how are they not prepared for what they find? What do they learn about themselves as a result of this night? Have fun!

Here’s the song that inspired Boyle to write the story:

and a student film that was made from the story (with Tom Waits narrating):

Based on the video, I thought it was very exciting, but I was wrong. It seemed boring and it was lacking action or reason I couldn’t really comprehend what was going on so I skimmed through it, at first it seemed interesting, like maybe a scary movie but while it was continuing it just lacked an attention seeker to keep me from not getting bored. From what I could tell it’s about 2 guys that go on to lake but it isn’t explained why. I think the video should be more longer or at least explain more what the purpose of the video/story was about.

    • lamyths July 2, 2013 at 7:06 pm #

Manuel, thanks for replying! The video is the only the first part. But the point is to read the story first. Comment if you think the story lacks action, which I personally feel it has lots of action.

      • lamyths July 2, 2013 at 7:42 pm #

Let me rephrase that: I “know” the story has lots of action. I would be curious what others thought if there was an inciting incident or not? If you were able to get to the second page, I feel there’s an inciting incident. As far as action: ASS KICKING, attempted MURDER/RAPE, DRUG/ALCOHOL USE, RUNNING away from biker GANGS, DEAD BODIES, THRASHING a Chevy Bel-Air. Now, come to think of it, I’d be hard-pressed to think of another short story with more action. What do you guys think?

Wow! I don’t think they had absolutely nothing they were rebelling against. They were 3 spoiled bored teenagers. Which in return, my favorite part was when they got their asses handed to them. Not the definition of thug life today because that wasn’t what the late great 2pac shakur was referring to when he said it. I’m not sure what they were looking for at the lake. Maybe something to kill their boredom. Yes, they weren’t at all prepared what they found. Literally scared straight. Which is good. They needed a dose of their own medicine. Kinda like the show, beyond scared straight. At the end they looked like they learned their lesson. If they were bad, they’d take the girls offer, popt pills and ignore poor Al floating in the lake. But they didn’t. They truly wanted to go home. The descriptive writing was amazing! Loved it. Sometimes I got lost but re read it again. It brought the story to life.

Except, Eric Stoltz and James Spader. They’re too dreamy to use as examples.

    Greasy lake
The introduction quote by Springsteen made this place real. These kids are having the t time of their lives. It is crazy how we experience the feeling of fear. I never had such a crazy night. Thanks mom and dad. I know of people who have. They live in jail now. It is not good to be bad. The characters we have read about are growing up. They are learning lessons. The characters in greasy lake are rebelling against nothing to do. Everything is closed and they go to the lake to party. Man one crazy scene at the lake they should have gone home. The kids in the story where not prepared everything escalated to more trouble. At the end when the girl approaches them with the pills. He does not go with her that is a form that shows the character is changing. They learned they should take it easy and not be so wild.

    • lamyths July 2, 2013 at 7:12 pm #

Edwin, I think that’s a powerful remark ” I never had such a crazy night” and if you did…”live in jail now.” Another thing to consider with these teenagers, is there socioeconomic status. One of them is set to going to an ivy league school. If the police did catch them that night, what would happen? If, instead, the police caught some boys with darker skin and from a neighborhood with not as much money: what would happen to them??

    • Olivia Gomez July 8, 2013 at 11:17 pm #

What LA myths says is right Edwin . What would happen if this was a different neighborhood and different color skin, I can tell you what will happen . All the kids would go straight to jail and held accountable for their actions . They are given so many chances because of who they are instead of what they have done . It’s like the lighter the skin the harder it is to believe you can be a criminal . Although I have read somewhere that sociopaths are mostly white . I guess not everyone wants to take these type of studies very seriousely.

These guys are not rebelling against anything, if anything they are just bored teens. Nothing really out of the ordinary there. I honestly don’t know this story kind of bored me. There was nothing interesting in it. It seems kind of easy to see where this story was going and there are hardly any surprises there. Most people do tend to do weird and crazy things when they are bored and usually get into trouble. Even if in then end they do show some change it. I would have preferred a more creative story with a slightly different ending. This is just my opinion

  5. Brandon lopez July 2, 2013 at 8:40 pm #

they had nothing worth rebelling about. they are just dumb spoiled kids looking for something fun to do. the film was boring it let to nothing suspenseful. i feel as if we all knew where this was going and well its seams as if it was written all in one day just to make it for the sake of making it. its all fun and games acting hard till some one kicks the shit out of you to bring you back down to earth.

  6. wendy rosales July 2, 2013 at 8:48 pm #

This story was pretty cool to read. Some part reminded me of certain friends and I when I was in high school and middle school. Being reckless, and cursing. It was interesting how it all started in the beginning, the detail it gives. I didn’t really think that they would get their butt kicked, but then again yeah. They are young and free, no worries but trying to be cool and bad. It was funny to me how it said that they were trying to be bad and driving in their moms bel air car (hahaha) It was like a typical white boys having it all and yet trying to be bad, then get there asses kicked. That was the worse how his car was wreaked and the man was dead. The part were he just wanted to go home and to his parents and just lay in bed, its gets you thinking like your not so bad after all, when actual things happen. But I do like how he was thinking about guerillas and commandos and the naked and the dead. What I also saw is that when he actually gets drugs given to him for a girl he then doesn’t want them and just wants to go home. It was just a change of character but a joke of a character trying to be bad, when in reality they aren’t and one having the chance to go to Cornell.

  7. Angelica Barrientos July 2, 2013 at 9:25 pm #

Seems like the guys learned a lesson. They seen how their actions had terrible consequences. I don’t think it was just “boys having fun” . They were doing bad things fighting the greasy character and almost raping the girl which at some point they knew was wrong. I think the wrecked car came in as minimum punishment. They deserved worse. I really can see this story maybe aired on Lifetime.

“Greasy Lake” this is a cool story. Its one of those nights, for sure. I can relate to this night only because there are times i went out when i was younger, and things happened that were unplanned and rebellious. Yes, some friends of mine are doing time, about 30 years in jail, for rebellious things we have done, but some of us are still out and lucky. Thank goodness that i have changed because being in a situation where people get hurt and everyone is angry can lead to things that are not necessary. I do not like the part where they want to rape the girl. To me if some one if going far out and gonna rape a girl they should go to jail and deal with the consequences in there. Its a fact they will get stabbed up and killed for raping/sexually abusing a female. If they wanted to act dumb and crash into someones car than deal with it and get beat up. They were wrong for assuming it was someone else they knew and it wasn’t. Yea being rebellious is a stage in adolescence; however, they make pretty stupid assumptions that got them into a dilemma. If your gonna be bad, be bad the right way, and have your facts right. I feel like this was back in the days but if it was now they would be called gangsters, there’s nothing wrong with being a gangster but its dumb to be a stupid gangster. i would know i grew up and my family is all like that (gangsters) and the most dumbest thing to do is to do ridiculous shit. I know i have done things in my life that were crazy like that but not as stupid as that. i never hurt or provoked something with the wrong person. I just hoped they learned something from that experience because i know there’s a lesson in each experience i have had. And they need to get that “raping” out of there head. It makes them “NO GOOD”. but over all it kept me going to see what happen next.. hope there are more stories to come like this.

It doesn’t seem like they were rebelling against anything, just being dumb. I could see how they were bored judging by the video and somewhat of how the story went also. The only conclusion to why it’s good to be bad sometimes is probably because you find out things about yourself, sorta finding who you truly are within yourself. It seems they were just looking for a good time, but didn’t get that at the lake. If anything I would consider that a really bad night, maybe even worded ever. Not everyone is prepared to see someone’s corpse. But sometimes having an experience like that could change your whole life.

    “Greasy Lake”

I had to read the story twice. I really didn’t understand it the first time. After reading a second time I kind of understood it. I believe they were just some teenage boys trying to be “bad boys”. They didn’t know what they were getting themselves into; they were hoping to have some fun. I think they were trying to be rebellious against their own community/ society. Back then greasers were considered the rebellious, druggies, and not giving a “shit” type of people. At the lake they are lookin for some fun. Even though they are all hyped up because they have drugs, music, and plan to see naked girls, they aren’t prepared for the incident that occurred. It’s funny how they thought they were all tough, but ended up being cowards and running away from the the guy they had beat up. I think that at the end they learned that they weren’t bad boys at all. That looking for fun can lead you to trouble.

    • Alexander Escobar July 8, 2013 at 10:53 pm #

Yeah it was pretty funny that the boys thought that they were badass greasers but in the end thy were not so bad ass at all

  11. LIXIAN ZHAO July 2, 2013 at 9:40 pm #

TBH,the story is long but it really reveals the typical teenagers who are trying to rebellious. In the story, these boys choose to be the bad guys like the ones in movies. They dress like them, talk like them. But I think they are not the bad guys, and just want to act to be bad. This reminds me of some girls in high schools. They always wanted to be different; they laughed hard in the hallway, made fun of other people. However, all these actions just prove that they are immature. I believe people at the teen ages would do some of these things, and this is just a way of becoming adults.

    Greasy Lake

The three characters to me are just dumb teenagers trying to be all cool. They mess with the wrong person and for that they get their ass beat. By getting his ass beat and watching his friends being punch and kick, one of the characters reach his exploding limit and kills the man with a tire iron. the character didn’t know he was capable of killing a person but he did with all the rage he had. this shows proves that even us, we don’t know our own limits until something bad is happening to us. Going home they have the option to stay and take the drug pills and have more fun, but they just choose to go home all scared of what just happen.

This story was a good read. I enjoyed everything about it. “It’s good to be bad” I think it’s just as phrase. For example “I’m bad to the Bone” it’s a phrase just like that. I don’t think they’re rebelling against anything, they are just a group of young, dumb, teens. They were looking for a good time with their friends, a couple of beers, and some pot. But what they didn’t expect to find was Al, laying in the lake lifeless. What they found out about themselves is that they are still kids.

The video was cool, so was the story. The description of the story sounded much like it was in the video. I liked it. It reminds me of one of my favorite books ” The Outsiders” the authors sounded the same and they were both around the same time period. I really liked when they got their asses kicked it was very intertaining and cool

According to the radio and story, it was very interesting. i read the story twice as well. All characters in the story are Full of feelings. in the story, they rap a girl. They will get stabbed up and killed for raping/sexually abusing a female. So i dont like this part of story. I will never do such things like this, and never had a crazy night like that. its hard to understand some of things that the writer want to show me. i will try to know how the character is and what information writer want to show us.

    “Greasy Lake”

The story was kind of interesting, but just a little too long. I’m not sure why it would be good to be bad. The only thing I can think of is that you might learn from ur mistakes. Like in the story, the three main characters in the story. After being stupid for most of the night, and after finding the body. I think they change their ways. I did not find anything they were rebelling against…

lol i liked this story a lot better than the last. And yea, I don’t think these kids had anything to rebel on especially when one kid is taking martial arts and getting his college paid off by his parents. and the other has a car. wow. i think they were just talk the talk but definitely missing out on the walking. As to what they were looking for idk something to be able to mess around with fuck shit up i suppose. And should they have expected to find what they did. well no who would think they would run into a dead body even if you “act badass.” but i do wonder if they guys did get a hold of them. would they have killed him too o.o

    “Greasy Lake”

This story garbed my attention from the get go. It reminded me of myself when I was in high school and thought it was cool to start trouble. I think the characters in the story “Greasy Lake”, are rebellion against everyone. They are at that age where they are legally adults, yet still need the support of their parents. They are pretty much a bunch of spoiled kids with their parents money to spend. They were going to “Greasy Lake” to chill , and hopefully find something to do. What started as a playful gesture to embares another friend, turned into them knocking some stranger uncontious, and attempting to rape the strangers girlfriend. Then they get their car wrecked, find a dead body, and get offered drugs by some older woman. I think they realized they were just a bunch of spoiled kids that were way over their trying to act like tough guys.

  19. Regina Valdez July 3, 2013 at 1:37 am #

I totally agree with the other readers, these boys were just bored and restless . What seemed to be a normal night turned terribly wrong. I can relate to this story. I live in Boyle Heights there is a store on the corner , where all the neighborhood hoodlums hang out . They have nothing better to do all day but smoke weed and write on the walls . they need to get a life . The police are always harrasing them , but i can agree they look like they are up to no good ,anyway back to the story yes these boys needed a asskickin to set them straight . Im glad that guy did it . as for the girl , they are luck they didnt proceed with that rape . That is one of the worst crimes you can commit …God help those boys.

After reading this story I began to think of the question you asked, “Why is it ‘good to be bad'”. I think the only time its actually good to be bad is when your a teen, and even then its never good to be bad. I know its a stage that mos teenagers feel they have to live up to, but once we become mature we realize what a complete fools we looked like. The guys in the story are simply doing the same, trying to be bad. We can tell by the story that even tho they did a horrible thing, that wasn’t who they really were. They were trying very hard to act and look a certain way. I found it funny when one of the guys starts throwing up out of his moms car window, the bel-air, or when he said he put the bar iron under the seat because thats where bad characters keep it at. It was not that they were bad it was that they where trying really hard to be bad. Basically what i got out of this story is dont try to be something your not, especially dont try to dress like something your not. If you do be prepared to face the consequences. whether you dress like a gang member, a hooker, or simply dont wear a red shirt at target, you’ll be confused for an employee.

    Greasy Lake
I really enjoyed reading this story. I identified with cultivating decadence like a taste. I was the same way. I did everything in my power to make sure I was the opposite of good. My favorite line was… “they wore their mirror shades at breakfast and dinner, in the shower, in closets and caves. In short, they were bad.” …They were so bad that they got themselves into some pretty deep shit. Just goes to show you how quickly it can happen too. All they were doing was looking for a good time instead of maybe what they should have been doing. Story of my life, hahaha. Look where that landed me, 20 years late for college with a story similar to this to tell. Anyways, very good story. I would actually like to read more from the author T. Coraghessan Boyle

    “Greasy Lake”
The story its self is pretty cool. I can relate. I like the part when he says that they went to greasy lake because all of the bars were closing because it was 2am. While they were up there, they ended up wanting to come back because no one was there that they liked. So when they saw the blue car, they thought it was they’re friend having sex with some random girl so they wanted to sneak a peak. Unfortunately it wasn’t him so they ended up getting into a fight. That was funny because I’ve seen that before when we were drunk once. One of my friends thought it was my house we saw, it was a completely random house, so he runs in there trying to go to my room so that we can play PS3 and end up walking in on a girl having sex and he got his ass kicked but i had to explain to the guy that he was drunk and it was an accident. But in the story, they actually saw a dead body. We didn’t see one haha. At the lake there were looking for friends and a good time but didn’t find that, clearly. I’m sure the boys learned not to assume something is someone they think it might be.

I really enjoyed the story after reading i could identify with it in a way because while growing up i was around many young teenage boys that acted the same way. I believe that this story is just about teenage boys trying to find their true identity. I dont completely disagree with their actions i dont believe that when they are doing bad things that they are doing it to be malicious in my opinion they are only trying to find themselves.

He talks like a big tough guy haha I like it. Humors me. I like throwing eggs at mean people’s houses. I enjoyed reading his thoughts while getting his ass beat. It got interesting when he says that the cop asks the murderer: “what happened next?” I wanted more action though. I liked the writing. I also thought they grew up. Somehow people gotta learn when to grow up, sometimes its a harsh lesson for some.

    “Greasy Lake”

I enjoyed this story and I know that many people thought there was nothing to rebel against but we all go through that rebellious faze. That is partially what made it so entertaining to me. The way I view this is a few guys just growing up and getting themselves into trouble just to make an excuse to get into more trouble. It is the way we all grow up especially in today’s society. More and more kids are growing up before their time and they rebel so much but it’s a part of life.

    Greasy Lake:

I do not think they were rebelling against anything specific in the story. I think they were a bunch of immature teenagers who get bored a lot. I think the only reason as to why they would think “it’s good to be bad” is because sometimes being good can be boring. If you are a good person then I guess that means that you do not really have much of a life. I do not believe that is entirely true. I mean it would be boring if you are a “goody- two shoes”, or something. I think they were looking for some fun at the lake, since that is where everyone goes. The fact that they were unprepared for what happened towards the middle of the story means that they are not entirely bad as they claimed themselves to be to other people. Otherwise, they would not have cared about what happened. I think they learned that just because they are bad, does not necessarily mean that they are uncaring people and there are consequences to their action. When there is an action, there is a reaction.

  27. Cynthia Huerta July 3, 2013 at 6:08 pm #

For a short story, this story had a whole lot a action. It reminds me of the movie “Rebel Without A Cause” where a couple of teenagers get themselves in a similar situation. It was really wacky how they got themselves in to such a horrible situation. Who knew by making a little mistake, such as mistaking their friends car for someone else’s would get them into so much trouble. They got their butt’s kicked and their self esteem shattered. It was really ironic how the keys were really close to the car door. If they would of found the keys the night before, they would of saved themselves an ass kicking. The ending was funny, they didn’t want to bother with the girl. All they wanted to do was get out of there as soon as possible.

“Greasy lake” I enjoyed the story because it just remind me of my essay of Yunior being a douchebag or appealing. Even tho the boys in the story they were 19th, they still in a stage were their surrounding play an important role for them. Some teen mature at that age but not in this case. The boys were trying hard to be bad since they thought i that’s what would make them cool. Also dress a certain way to show they were rebels who were up for no good.

Great story! Even in some parts I had to read back and forth a couple times before I can understand. It literally draws me into the story and make me just want to read more. From my point of view, the characters are desperately trying to prove to each other how bad they are when at the end they all kind regret being that way. They are just kids. We’ve all been there; being a badass and hope friends would look up to us. When we look back, we all laugh for what we did when we were young. People sometimes do stupid things when young; trying to be someone they’re not. But keep in mind, there are things can be redone, some of them will live with us for the rest of life. Just like a scar, it will not totally disappear, not matter how much you want it to be gone.

I found this story to be my favorite story so far. I think that it was funny when they talk about what bad boys do. The fight was pretty cool, and I was able to picture the whole fight and their journey through the lake. The creepiest part in the story is when they try to go back to their car and there is a girl that approaches them. I believe that the girl is the person responsible for the body in the lake. The part that gave me goosebumps is when she waving bye to them as they drive away.

  32. Diana Cardenas July 3, 2013 at 9:51 pm #

I don’t think they had anything to rebel against. Or maybe they wanted to rebel against their families, I really don’t know. They were looking for fun at the lake since they were completely bored, but faced with the unexpected. They were totally not prepared for what happened to them. I’m sure they weren’t ready for how savagely they reacted to the guy and how they got their butts kicked. They all seriously got scared straight and I can’t believe he told no to the girl who offered him drugs. So that shows he was scared straight. I feel bad for the mother’s car and wondered what was the story he told his mother.

    “Greasy Lake”

Enjoyed the reading very much because of the action and liked the setting where the story takes place. In this story the image of the cool bad boys is presented, about 3 friends that are up to no good and are always in look of ways to having fun with no concern of anything or consequence. The story of these three young men who reckless lifestyles and spontaneous way get them into trouble. As I continue reading the problems kept escalating for them. They lost control of the situation and got into serious trouble. The story gets better as read from the start of the fight. The suspense is elevated when they kill the man and raped the woman that accompanied him. this boys learn a valuable lesson of life to be more careful with their actions.

This story didn’t really catch my attention, but it did remind me of some friends that I have. Always trying trying to her introuble or starting trouble. Everytime that use to hang out with them they were no day that the wont start trouble. Sometimes it was just for fun but most of the time it wasn’t for fun. My friends could relate to this story.

This story reminds me of the movie and book “The Outsiders “. Same story plot and similar characters. I think that the main character admires and wants to fix in with the other two “cool” guys Digby and Jeff. I don’t believe being bad is good in any way. It’s always good to stand up for want you beileve or be different but not in being trouble makers. This guys is doing all these things simply to he wants to be accepted and fix in the group of the “cool” people. I believe that tha’s exactly what the guys were looking for. Trouble they were looking to get their ass kicked by someobe much older and worst than them. They always believe they were bad and cool yet they founder characters bigger and worst than them. Now they are all scare not satying anything because they kow for a fact they aren’t as bad as they think. In fact to the eyes of the other characters they looked like chickens hidding away. They were all tough when in came to causing the promblen but they weren’t when it came time to face their action’s consequences. I had a fun time simply imagining their face when they realize it wasn’t Tony’s car.lol

I like the story, the boys deserved a second chance. cuz they are not actually BAD, they did those kind of stuffs just wanted to find a certain excitement. or a social status. being a criminal is a cool thing to some extent. that character remind me of the joker in bat man whose most famous line was “chaos is fair”. they just want a be a outsider in a serious world or be a unstable factor in a place that full of rules, laws or conventions. they just wanted to break the chains of the humanity and civilization for just one night. but their bar of ethical forbade them to do so. so finally they give up being bad guys because they are not strikingly bad as many of us think so..

I believe in the story the three guys get a sense of satisfaction or pleasure of being bad. The guys are rebelling against their parents. The guys were looking for the keys to the car because one of them had lost the keys. The three guys ran to hide because they got caught almost raping a woman as a result they find a dead man in the lake, which in the story said “the man had been dead for three days”. What the guys learned as a result that night, was if they keep it up, things could turn to be far worse.

    “Greasy Lake”
The story was very interesting, the three boys were lucky they did not get killed during the prank they tried. I believe every teenager goes through a rebellious phase while growing up. It is a time in their life where they are trying to explore and meet different people. Which in the process the characters are rebelling against their parents rules. The characters in the story are going out to the greasy lake to get dunk and stay out late and maybe meet some girls. I believe they were not ready for a fight because they are not the type of people that like to fight, or go looking for fights. The idea of being bad, I think is a cry out for attention. If a individual does not get any attention at home, they might possibly go out and search for that attention. The manner that they go searching for attention is not always the right approach.

I agree in the kids trying to get attention outside of their homes, looking for something interested to find. The boys being rebellious like any other teenager got themselves in trouble. Kill a man with the instant of saving themselves. It’s wrong that they kill a human being but from that experience they learn they can reach limits they thought they couldn’t.

“Greasy Lake” was actually a story that really caught my attention. Although I had to back a few times just to get what was going on because I thought I had Looks more like these these spoiled rich kids had nothing better to do. and I think that they should get punished for what they did They got away with what they did and they seemed pretty scared about it but it doesn’t necessarly means that they are child needs no matter what age they arenot going to repeat it. What these boys need it’s attention, attention from the parents is what they are looking for that is why they do what they do. That is why kids go out and join gangs because they feel that they get the attention that they want from these so called friend when at the end they are not there for them. But this is not their fault this is the parents fault for not being there for these kids and giving the love and attention every child needs no matter what age they are.

    “greasy lake ”
Story reminds me of my high school days when everyone thought they would be cool to be bad asses specially the guys , girls not to much . My friends tried to make me bad but as much as I tried , it’s like I can hear my mom telling me the things I was about to do was bad. The mom voice was annoying most of the time but I’m grateful now because in order to get into higher positions in any job a background check must be passes , something that most of my friends cannot pass. Greasy lake these kids get away with things because they are spoiled and the parents will always be there to help them that’s why they take advantage of the situation.

In Greasy Lake it is cool to be bad because that’s the scene of their culture. They head to the lake to hang out drink and smoke or to get into trouble! Getting into trouble was cool to them. As they head into the lake to hide after beating up the guy. They ran scared thinking they have murdered the guy and not realizing he was still alive. Once the people leave they come out of the lake and get question if they had seen some guy. Scared out of their mind, they say no and head home with silence. I believe they will stop trying to be the cool bad kids who roughen things up and actually be fun and enjoy their life.

they are a bunch of young boys who get into trouble and do not to get in trouble. through their prank they turn out to be true cowards. after they believe that they killed the man . they learned through their process that they are better off staying teens after they learn that Being adults isn’t something that they are looking forward to . posers always try to be cool and once the going gets rough they run like little babies

the boys in “Greasy lake” remind me a lot like the book the “the outsiders” , when they described themselves as greasy, and they wore their leather jackets. The boys where very childish, they had nothing to do but look for trouble. This story didn’t really make sence for me, maybe because it seem like if they where just trying to fit in around there friends.

Boys will be Boys and will rebel against everything at some point throughout Life. Family, Authority, and anything that is related to order and rules. I relate very much to the Greasy Lake boys coming from a family that is old fashioned. When your parents keep their eye on you and try to control their kid’s life when they get to a certain age; the kid’s reaction can get rebellious. The boys were rebelling against life and didn’t have much of one either. This story reminds me of the movie “Stand By Me” when four boys in Oregon take a little camping trip away from home and find a dead body in their journey.

I believe the boys go to find a way or refugee. I think the boys learn their lesson because at the end when the girls ask them if they want to do something with them the guy felt like almost crying. I think they felt remorse for doing what they’ve done almost killing that guy and raping a girl. teenage rebellion can sometimes get out of had. Teens rebel to find their own identity or to seek adventure.
