I had a lot of fun with this one. I know it's far from perfect, and I blame my lack of mental imagining on what a horse's legs look like from different perspectives, but I think it's decent. Hope you enjoy the little story I wrote for it...
Hailey leaned against the wooden pasture fence just watching the horses run freely across the enclosed meadow. A gentle wind danced across her, causing her bright brunette ponytail to sway. She gazed at the powerful animals before her, wondering what it was like to contain that much strength. She wondered how free it felt to move so swiftly and so elegantly. She sighed, wishing she could just leave behind all of her worries, all of her responsibilities, and just run with the horses. But sadly, her life couldn’t be that simple. She needed to pay her way through school, which was why she had taken this stable-hand position at a ranch on the outskirts of her small home-town. Her parents pushed her to succeed but, in the end, wouldn’t support her financially. She was single, just another poor college bookworm that nobody paid any attention to. She sighed again, this time with a considerably heavier heart.
A shiver ran down her spine, causing her entire body to tingle. It was an unusual sensation. Hailey ran her hands up and down her exposed arms, trying to brush away the goose-bumps that appeared as her fine hairs stood on end. Her toes began to ache horribly. She bent down and removed her boots and set her feet down gently on the soft, moist soil. The peculiar pain spread to her whole foot. Then, right before her eyes, her feet began to change. Hailey gasped in horror and pain as he toes merged together and her toenails expanded and hardened. In a moment, she was left with what looked like a pair of hooves.
Before Hailey’s mind could process what she’d just seen and felt, her legs began to itch and ache. She watched as thick, chestnut-colored hair began to sprout up all along the surface of her once-smooth legs. She winced as her the structure of the bones in her legs shifted; adding another joint just distal to what was her knee. She felt the back of her skirt creeping up. She twisted around for a better look. Her eyes widened as she watched the long hairs of a horse’s tail push their way out from under her skirt. Trembling, Hailey tried to move, she had to get help before she changed further. Her balance was all wrong; her new equine legs moved differently than she was used to. She had to hold on to the fence to keep from falling onto her horse-like hindquarters.
The strange sensations ceased for a moment, giving Hailey a chance to collect herself. Taking a deep breath, she let go of the fence and tried to take a few cautious steps back towards the stables. Her legs trembled beneath her as she struggled to establish her balance. She threw her arms out to her sides to help keep herself from falling over. Slowly, she managed to teach herself how walk on her new hooves. She had a momentary feeling of triumph as she realized she was able to move, her slightly elevated mood caused her new tail to rise, pulling her skirt up further. Her face flushed red, though she knew no one could see her, and she tugged at the end of her skirt, trying desperately to push it back down.
Before she could even get half-way back to the stables, an all-too-familiar pain returned - this time in her lower back and around her crotch. She threw her arms across her belly and doubled over, but that made the pain worse. A strange new instinct caused her to arch her back. Her back began to grow, as if her furry butt was being stretched away from her torso. Hailey winced again; she could feel new vertebrae and ribs growing to support her expanded midsection.
Almost simultaneously, she felt growth at two points just under and lateral to her belly. It started as two small mounds and quickly grew, bones forming painfully under newly-grown furry flesh. The two points continued to expand until they came to hoofed ends. She was still standing on two legs, but now they were her hind-legs. She couldn’t stay reared back forever as gravity pulled her front-half back to the earth. Hailey kept her new front legs straight spread out passed her shoulder-width. Her entire body was trembling again.
Before she could examine the new changes the sides of her head hurt. Her ears itched and tingled. Hailey clenched her eyes shut and reached up to clutch her head, but her hands brushed up against her ears. They had become long, pointed, and covered in fur. Her head continued to hurt; it felt like certain parts of her brain were changing to accommodate the functioning of her new legs.
A moment later, it all stopped. Slowly, Hailey opened her eyes. Her heart hammered away in her chest as she looked down at her legs. Her lower half was that of a horse. She took several long, deep breaths, but she couldn’t fully calm her panic. Still shaking, she cautiously raised her front-left leg and planted the hoof firmly underneath her. She did the same for her front-right leg so that she was standing straight now.
She twisted herself around and ran a hand along the portion of her extended backside that she could reach. The light, chestnut fur tickled her hand and stimulated the freshly formed nerves under her new equine sides. She didn’t know how to explain the sensation; she had never felt anything behind her like that. She ran her other hand along the surface of her new ears, which were now about half a foot in length. This was an equally strange feeling.
Tears formed in her eyes; she was terrified by the changes. She had no clue why this had happened to her. She had to get help; maybe it was some type of bizarre allergic reaction – maybe there was medicine to change her back. But before she could get help, she had to move her new body.
Slowly, she tried to coordinate the movements of her four, hoofed legs. The first time she tried to take a step, she fell to the ground with a loud thud, though it didn’t hurt her new body as much as it sounded. Body shaking, she was able to roll back onto her long under-belly and push herself back up to a standing position. After a little experimentation and two meetings with the earth, Hailey managed to take her first steps in this new form.
Now that she was able to walk, what she had become really became real. She was now a centaur. Her life would never be the same; she thought of all of the new problems she would have adjusting to these changes. At least people would notice her now.
Then, finally, she came to another realization. Once she got used to these new legs, she could do just what she had wished: to run free with the horses – to leave her troubles behind her and gallop away her problems. Maybe she could get used to this.
