965 is much more raw, more like a go-cart. The power comes on very hard, the instant car reaches 3500 or so RPM. It's also much more tempermental then the 996TT and there seems to be a ton more feedback from the car. The 996TT in turn is much more refined, more predictable in its maners. Mine is Stage 3 by FVD and is a true monster. To me it feels more like a sport bike the way it accelerates through the gears. The 965 was much more challenging to drive b/c it felt like if you loose the back end - that's it. With the 996TT i can make the tail come out on demand while cornering or on straights and catch it back easy (and i do that as much as it is possible around here.) On the other hand i felt it was much easier to launch 965 in a drag race then it is to launch 996TT (without breaking expansive stuff.)
I loved the 965 and i love the 996TT and for me it was really hard to decide, but i went with the newer technology after all. Maybe if my 965 didn't have 70K miles i would just keep it...
