After several months of development my first full release game is finished and ready for download!
The game can be downloaded for free on Itch.

Download Cozy Days (Itch.io)

Cozy Days is a relaxing sandbox game featuring a peaceful house with a warm and cozy fireplace at its heart.

Throw chunky logs into the fireplace, light a few candles and enjoy the crunchy crackling of timber and the soothing dance of glowing tiny pixels as the midi based retro music plays in the background.

Cozy Days simply provides a calming hygge ambiance for relaxing, studying, reading, sleeping and meditating.

You can also organize the items in the house to create your personal space.

I wish you all cozy days! :)

Hello, PJ!

On May 17th a game for which I produced pixel art over nearly 2 years was released on Steam - "The friends of Ringo Ishikawa". I was mainly responsible for  the static graphics, including locations/levels, item icons, UI, and Steam cards.

If I were to start over work on the project today I would draw certain game assets differently such as the trees and bushes for example. Anyway I'm glad that the game is finished and released and that people can now play it. Frankly speaking this is my first big game on Steam, and I want share it with PJ! I would appreciate any feedback you may have, especially in the area of the game's art.

Get it on Steam here!

Fight Scene

Sincerely, Artem Belov / Wedmak2.

I’ve finally managed to sneak my way onto Steam Greenlight with my metroidvania Nightkeep. As a direct result of this, the game has received a rather big update.

Nightkeep is a 2D metroidvania-like platformer with RPG elements set in a fictional medieval fantasy world, accompanied by an original story. You play as Arietta, a huntress. She’s more of a lone wolf and even though hunters usually hunt in groups, Arietta has her own approach.

When I first joined pixeljoint (2014) I could barely draw lights or shades. I have to thank all great users from the WIP seciton who gave me advice over the years. Because of you I am able to draw things way better now.

With my current skill level, which is far away from perfect, I can still fulfill my dream of making a full custom game.

If you like my project, I’d really appreciate support of any sort. I hope this can at least motivate starting pixel artists, if nothing else! It is great to be part of a community such as PJ!

The Internet Arcade is a web-based library of arcade (coin-operated) video games from the 1970s through to the 1990s, emulated in JSMAME, part of the JSMESS software package. Containing hundreds of games ranging through many different genres and styles, the Arcade provides research, comparison, and entertainment in the realm of the Video Game Arcade.

The game collection ranges from early "bronze-age" videogames, with black and white screens and simple sounds, through to large-scale games containing digitized voices, images and music. Two freeware Commodore 64-style games comin' atcha.

Grand Mystic Quest of Discovery
is a Flash-based puzzle platformer made by hulahulahest for the 19th Ludum Dare competition. You control a wizard in his quest to discover the secret of some ancient ruins. Learning spells gains you access to new areas, eventually allowing you to collect all six scroll pieces and find the exit. Due to the fact that it was made in 48 hours, the game contains no sound and has a somewhat disappointing ending, but the gameplay and pixel art graphics are solid. It takes about an hour to complete the game; your progress is saved automatically.

Rocky Memphis and the Temple of Ophuxoff is a downloadable platform game for Windows and Mac in which you guide the titular character through a large temple filled with monsters and treasure. The game presents you with the daunting task of collecting all 4000 pieces of treasure, which is done in a manner very similar to the gameplay in Jet Set Willy. Fortunately, a save function is available as well as an automatic mapper that keeps track of the rooms you've visited and completed, which makes things quite manageable and suitable for playing in short bursts. The level design and powerup placement appear to have been made with speedrunning in mind, so that should provide an extra challenge for those so inclined.

Hero Core is a superb 2D shooter by Daniel Remar (best known for making Iji). You control Flip Hero in his quest to destroy the machine warlord Cruiser Tetron once and for all. While it is possible to fight Tetron very early in the game, you can also choose to explore the game world (in a manner reminiscent of the Metroid games) to upgrade your weapons and defences. The game features simple but effective 1-bit graphics, a cool retro soundtrack and some well-designed game mechanics and bosses. Remember Jetpack, the classic DOS platformer (www.adeptsoftware.com/jetpack/)? A sequel's being made in Flash after all these years, and instead of hiring an artist, Adam Pedersen's letting the players themselves contribute pixel art, tracker music, SFX and levels for the game in the form of a contest. The two top entrants will receive $50 and the next four $25. In addition, everyone whose work ends up being used gets a free copy of Jetpack 2 once it's finished, as well as a mention in the credits.

The deadline is March 13th. Now's a neat chance to get creative and repay the good memories!

Dino Run is Pixel Jam's most popular game. Infact it is a free flash multiplayer game. You control a Dino escaping extinction, Play single player, Multiplayer and reach amazing running speeds in this popular platform racing game. This game combines classic pixels and  complex pixel effects together.

Link: http://www.pixeljam.com/dinorun/

Pros: Fun, Lasts a little, multiplayer, pixel, graphics, features.

Cons: Sometimes there aren't many matches going on, may not work if your computer is sluggish and super slow, other than that it is a very good game.

Nitrome has a new platform game out and it looks and plays as well as all the Nitrome games always do. The pixels by Markus Heinel are all cute and very well made. This one contains twenty levels that only get tougher and tougher. All you must do is escape the caves before they crumble. Fun!

Play it here!

Canabalt is a fun little Flash game made by AdamAtomic using his flixel library. In the game, you control a running man as he makes his 'daring escape', presumably from the futuristic robots that can be seen destroying the city in the background. All you have to do is press the X or C key at the right times to jump over obstacles and to leap to the next rooftop, which gets pretty challenging after a while. The audio and visuals are quite good and do a great job at creating a sense of urgency. Give it a try.

The game includes 3 playable characters from the Toxic Sonic band, as well as another 3 hidden characters, and plenty more secrets, which you may find the code to upon viewing some of Manning Krull's latest submissons here. Thats right... This year the company that got Great Giana Sisters off the shelves in the 80's, are now making their own version. Oh the sweet irony. Maybe this time the brothers really are history? The game features heavily updated graphics and animation as well as remixes of the classic Chris Hülsbeck masterpieces. Check out the official homepage and Spellbound's (in german) homepage.

No, its not a speedrun, but its the kind of fanservice we love.

Needless to say, don't watch it if you don't want to get spoilers.

What would The Dark Knight look like if it was a NES game, and not a Batman movie?

Find out here ;)

Its a fake NES game intro, made by an animator called Macbee.
I found a few of the image, and I expect them to be very good reduxes, not pixel art, but still its fun to watch :)

A nice pixel based adventure. A quest: finding the missing pieces of a spacecraft and a whole planet to explore. The map is really huge and it has a nice feel to it. Several hours of gameplay guaranteed...

8bit killer is a lovely little retro Game Maker-made FPS that combines a NES aesthetic with gameplay and 3D engine similar to Wolfenstein 3-D. It consists of 4 chapters with 3 levels each. It's quite amusing and should be able to entertain you for an hour or so (assuming you use Windows).

Download here. Use the WASD or arrow keys to walk, press space to choose between weapons, move the mouse to look, press the left mouse button to shoot and press the right mouse button to open doors. Esc ends the game.

Metaplace

A friend of mine linked me to this, a group of coders will be releasing a web based massive multi-player game maker. This caught my attention, I have a sudden urge to try and make Terra into a web based MMO.

Definitely something worth checking out and keeping an eye on. Metaplace is currently in closed alpha testing.

There's up to $10,000 in tuition awards for an in-game design, concept art and a pair of essays for any girl enrolled at an Art Institute being given out by Sony. Plus, the grand prize winner will get a paid design internship at one of the four SOE studios across the US. This is nothing to sneeze at, as getting a game design job is nearly impossible for newbie designers.  Somebody must have just realized over 50% of the people playing games,  especially casual games which are largely pixel based, are female.

For more info see the following link:

Hey, I'm posting this on behalf of Phil Hassey, who is currently hosting the competition. We sure could use some more graphic oriented competitors. Here is the message:

Ludum Dare 10 is coming! Ludum Dare is a regular community driven game development competition. The goal is, given a theme and 48 hours, to develop a game from scratch. Ludum Dare aims to encourage game design experimentation, and provide a platform to develop and practice rapid game prototyping.
We're also building an archive of entries from previous compos. Goto the compo site and add your old entries! They will be added to the screenshot grids:
Lastly, if you have participated in previous LD's and have a game-dev related blog, I'd be thrilled to aggregate it onto the site. Create an account and then contact me with your blog info and I will add it ASAP.
Hope to see you there!
-Phil

As part of the Jay is games competition #4 (www.jayisgames.com) the team stimunation has entered with a short but fun little adventure style minigame. The pixelart is leaning towards the old LucasArts classics of Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle. It's short... but with some quality pixels in there.

Are you looking to waste a few hours running around a pixel fantasy land?

Well indie game maker Nifflas might have just what you're after. He makes addictive adventure games that are largely based around exploration. The majority of the artwork is rendered in very simple pixel art. Nifflas' latest release, Knytt Stories, is a compilation of several smaller games.

Well worth the download.
