Aeschynanthus are semi-succulent vining gesneriads, often nicknamed Lipstick Plants because of their unique flowers. The long, colorful blooms emerge from a dark base, resembling lipstick twisting up out of its applicator. The colors of the flowers vary and could be red, magenta, yellow, pink, orange, or purple. While the blooms are beautiful and surprising, we really love this houseplant for its slightly fuzzy foliage and thick, fleshy leaves.

Although Aeschynanthus are in the same family as African Violets, the trailing vines are more similar in care and appearance to Hoyas. The cascading growth habit make them an excellent choice as a hanging plant.

Because this plant is fast-growing and has beautiful blooms, many cultivars are currently available with different bloom shapes, flower colors, leaf shapes, and growing habits. Most of these plants have similar care, but research your specific cultivar for more information.
