2023 Christmas Lights Trail & Map: Newcastle, Lake Macquarie & Hunter Valley

It’s that time of year again when the Christmas lights start to appear. Newy with Kids is encouraging people to decorate their homes and /or front yards so that we can create a trail of Christmas lights in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Valley and Port Stephens for Christmas 2023 #christmasjoy. You can submit your Christmas Lights via our submission form.

Thanks to those who put so much time and effort into creating these beautiful displays for all of us to enjoy especially those fundraising for charities.

Hargreaves House

Chiplin Street Griswalds

For the young and young at heart, head to Chiplin Street to see a magnificent display of Christmas lights. Enjoy a large light display, festive music and from Friday to Sunday nights, large snow machines are in operation. No driveway access this year due to some construction works, but little ones welcome to run around the front lawn under the snow. Please respect neighbours and do not park across driveways and take any litter with you.

Santa’s Bakery

Whilst these might not look like the most spectacular lights, there is a hidden surprise for the more observant. Santa and his elves can be spotted preparing Christmas cookies in one of the windows. If you wait just long enough, you might even see Santa himself! This is a digital decoration using rear projection to create a life like image of Santa’s bakery.

King Street, Stockton Lights

This beautifully decorated house on the corner of King Street and Newcastle Street in Stockton takes weeks to set up. Not only are there thousands of lights but there are window displays, giant blow-up characters, lawn displays and more.

Cairns Family Light Display

Head to Arcadia street for this light display. The house looks like a Gingerbread House. There will be a fundraiser on Christmas Eve for Shitbox Rally. Proceeds to Cancer Council.

Santa, Snow and Carols

Come take a photo with Santa and sing along to carols under the snow. There will be Santa, Snow and Carols on Friday 8th, 15th and 22nd December. The displays on the nights are different to what’s on show during the week, so come along and enjoy yourself. No parking in the street on the 8th, 15th and 22nd. Please park in surrounding streets.

Jobling Street Lights

Stop by Jobling Street to see blinking lights synchronised with music. Tune to 99.1FM. Eight Christmas songs have been fully choreographed to music on a looping cycle. The show is best viewed from the footpath on the other side of the street.

Every year, Clarence Town Christmas Lights presents a massive Christmas lights display with a fundraising recipient. As well as being an annual fundraiser, this year’s display is dedicated to their daughter Tenieka (Niki) who sadly passed away in October.

Driving around and spotting Christmas lights is a holiday tradition for many local families and to make it extra fun, download our scavenger hunt. While you’re out enjoying the lights, you can make it a game to see how many items can you check off.

Tips For Seeing Christmas Lights

Choose one or two neighbourhoods to explore

For those with younger kids, choose a smaller area to explore on foot. On this list, we’ll be including streets that have lots of houses decorated on them so you can enjoy the lights all in one area. You can also drive around suburbs which have a lot of houses decorated with lights. In the past, this has included the suburbs of Cameron Park, Ashtonfield, Thornton and Fern Bay.

Dress in Christmas-themed clothes

Get into the Christmas spirit with Christmas-themed clothes. You might find that the light displays provide some great photo family ops, especially at dusk.

Pack food and drinks

Pack some food and drinks with you in case your family gets hungry. Some Christmas-themed choccies or baked goods are always a treat to eat.

Play some Christmas tunes

As you’re driving around looking at the Christmas lights, listen to some Christmas tunes. Make a family playlist and fill it with your favourites. Need inspiration? We’ve included our favourite Christmas singles in the Newy with Kids Christmas Spotify Playlist.
