Opie Acres, a Chattanooga-based non-profit that rescues wildlife rescue, says 12 of the racoons in their care have died after catching a virus.

"This is one of the most heart wrenching things any wildlife rehabilitator could go through," said Opie Acres.

On December 4, Opie Acres posted on Facebook saying a virus, most likely distemper, has invaded their rescue.

"We are working around the clock to save the lives of our raccoons. We have lost several already," said Opie Acres.

At the time, they sent one of the racoons to a veterinarian for necropsy and tissue pathology.

"These are babies we've raised from tiny infants. We've watched them grow and thrive. Some have even survived one previous bout of distemper, only to be hit again!" said Opie Acres.

The non-profit says the racoons have vaccinated and given the best care they can, but the virus keeps coming back.

They also cancelled their Christmas party due to ongoing concerns with the outbreak.

Opie Acres is asking for financial help during this difficult time.
