The Mystery Behind Dermatographia: A Skin Disease That Causes Hives
What is Dermatographia?
Dermatographia is a rare skin condition that causes hives when the skin is lightly scratched or rubbed. The condition, also called dermatographism or dermographism, shouldn't be confused with other skin conditions like hives or eczema. It's characterized by a raised white area that appears on the skin shortly after something has been lightly dragged along its surface. Because the rash can come and go with the slightest amount of pressure, it can be hard to diagnose and track the condition.
Causes and Symptoms of Dermatographia
The exact cause of dermatographism is unknown, though it is suspected that an allergic reaction or an immune system disorder may be partially responsible. Many people with this condition have a family member who also has it, suggesting a possible genetic predisposition.
The main symptom of dermatographia is a raised red rash with white welts (hives). The rash usually appears on the arms, legs, back, and chest of the affected person and can be caused by light contact with the skin, such as scratching or rubbing. Other symptoms may include itching, burning, and tingling.
Treatments for Dermatographia
The main treatment for dermatographia is to avoid contact with the skin that causes the rash. This includes using mild soaps and avoiding things like tight-fitting clothing and rough fabric. Patients may also be prescribed antihistamines to help reduce the symptoms of dermatographism. Other treatments that may be used to treat dermatographia include topical steroid creams, anti-inflammatory medications, and ultraviolet light therapy. In some cases, allergy shots may also be used to treat the condition.
