What is Guilloché Art?

The intricate patterns that you can see here are known as Guilloché patterns.

Guilloché is a decorative technique in which a very precise, intricate and a repetitive pattern is mechanically engraved on a metal surface, wood, ivory or any other material.

These patterns are quite easy to understand. I childhood you might have played with spirograph:

The patterns which it used to make are known as Guilloché patterns. Guilloché is a complete technique to make these patterns on paper, metal, wood or any other material.

What we used to do in a spirograph is that we used to put our pen in any of the holes on the smaller circle and used to rotate it inside a bigger circle so our pen used to make a beautiful pattern.

This pattern which is formed by a point on a smaller circle which rotates inside the bigger circle is known as Guilloché pattern.

These have been made by using various sizes of inner and outer circles and choosing various points on this small circle.

These intricate beautiful patterns are engraved on metals discs to make costers, on watch dials, on jewellery items, printed on background of currency notes and certificates etc and this complete art is known as Guilloché Art.
