ChatGPT vs. Gary Larson
Is A.I. able to match wits with Gary Larson? I ran an experiment to find out.
Experiment:
“Test Ability of ChatGPT and DALL-E 2 to create a humorous cartoon with cows.”
Objective:
Create a cartoon that is as humorous as Gary Larson’s original.
Method:
- Prompt DALL-E 2 to create an image of cows in the style of Gary Larson.
- Prompt ChatGPT to create humorous captions for the image.
- Compare the DALL-E 2/ChatGPT cartoon with the Gary Larson original.
Results:
- DALL-E 2 image was glitchy and bore only a passing resemblance to a humorous Gary Larson cow illustration.
- ChatGPT captions were unsurprising and ordinary.
- AI cartoon lacked humor.
Conclusion:
DALL-E 2 and ChatGPT are currently not able to match wits with Gary Larson. This might change with future versions of the A.I.
While Gary Larson’s original cartoon is rife with contradiction, and sets the reader up for the moment that comes next, the DALL-E 2 and ChatGPT cartoon is familiar, predictable and lacks contradiction.

On the right side of the illustration below is the product of DALL-E 2 and ChatGPT. In this experiment, the A.I. had an advantage because the setup was part of each prompt. Even with this advantage, the result was somewhat uninspiring.
