The Galerie Orbis pictus exhibits the work of the Japanese photographer Kimiko Yoshida, the greatest living Japanese photographer. An emblematic specialist in self-portraiture, freed from the rules and codes of the profession, Kimiko always takes a fresh look at our society without forgetting her ancestral traditions.

The result is a double image, an old image superimposed as if by transparency on a contemporary image.

Since 2001, Kimiko Yoshida has been creating monochrome self-portraits – without Photoshop – respecting an invariant conceptual protocol; they became her signature. The artist sees these self-portraits as timeless and abstract portraits, that is to say free from anecdote. This particular fixity of the subject, this indifference, as if the image contained within itself its absence of limits, responds to a very ancient process of infinite temporality in a restricted framework which dates back to the Flemish primitives. lacquered (urushi-e): ancient motifs are thus applied with lacquer and gold or silver powder on self-portraits of the artist printed on matte canvas. The result is a double image, an old image superimposed as if by transparency on a contemporary image.
