Years ago I had my first approach with Ulrich Seidl because a friend is a fan of his and also because we had seen together with the film Import/Export although I remember little of it, which had a discreet passage in Cannes without much commotion. I had planned to see it again but instead, I opted for this mockumentary in which we are warned of the decadence of the technological era in which we enter in a senseless way and how animals become the only faithful friends who are always there to give us affection. A portrait that has always existed in the world but in recent years has taken on greater relevance, this film could be a flip side…

This isn't as much a documentary about the relationship between humans and animals that I wanted it to be. It's actually hardly a documentary at all. Almost every scene is clearly directed by Seidl, and some people in it hide this fact better than others. This doesn't bother me though, and I really like the way it's filmed. What bothers me is that I felt that I got too close to these people. Seidl isn't out to portrait these animal loving persons in a loving and understanding way, and I just felt dirty and sorry for the people that were in this movie. I don't think it was exactly what they signed up for. Luckily for them they have understanding and loving pets at least.
I saw Austrian documentary about people and their pets and I was prepared for something completely different. It's more of a slice of life examination of a number of people, their daily lives and sometimes how their animals interact with that life. Some you feel genuinely bad for, others should probably not be allowed to have pets. Sure made me appreciate my cat that much more when it was done.
Formally brilliant but among the most unpleasant things you will ever see... can recommend if you like to fight off the urge to throw yourself in front of a train for a day.
I always think of the deleted scenes in Seidl's movies...the ones he saw alone and didn't share.
Every day I am reminded of when a BOY forced me to watch this and I cried because I hated it so much. I don’t believe in censorship obviously however I do wish this movie didn’t exist/no one was ever able to watch it because it’s honestly an affront to civilization and humanity as a whole. I wish I could rate this negative stars! It’s honestly even a compliment that I’m giving my time to rate this but literally every day I am reminded of how traumatized this movie (also a compliment to even call it a movie) made me. And no film bros, being traumatized is not fun for me and if that was the point of this godforsaken…
