Based on its reception at Canada Blooms on the weekend, the plant you will be asked the most questions about in Landscape Ontario's feature garden (G2), is Medinilla magnifica, common name is medinilla. There is a large display of them in a beautiful urn the drystone wallers built. It has large pendulous pink flowers- hard to miss.

Medinilla comes from the Philippines, and has only been recently introduced in Canada, although it's been grown in Europe for a while. It is a tropical - so will be sold as a patio plant at garden centres, and will need to be brought indoors before the first frost. It prefers filtered light, so should be placed in the shade outdoors, or an east-facing window indoors.

Watering is easy - let it dry out, then place it in a pan or sink of water to rewet the soil, let it dry out and repeat. Blooms should last about 2 months. When they have dried up, snap the flower head off. Within a few months, a new set of leaves should form, along with a flower bud.

Medinilla can be purchased at Canada Blooms at the Ontario Flower Growers booth, G17.
