Buildings as aircraft

OK, I was bored when I did these.

The Mormon temple as a bomber.

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant (post explosion/ pre sarcophagus) as a jet fighter.

Hogwarts main hall as a jet fighter.

The U.S. capitol building as a bomber.

And finally Stonehenge as a VTOL fighter.

Transformers LDS Mormon temple robot

The official transforming robot of the LDS church (not really.)

I grew up in Salt Lake City (and was a Mormon) and I passed by this building almost every day. I always thought it was a very impressive structure.

When the Transformers cartoon started back in 1984, I figured I could design my own robots (like everyone else.)  I came up with over 200 designs over the years. Some of them pretty clever, some not so much. One of my favorite ideas was this one. The temple is just perfect for the robot treatment.

I could never find a little plastic model to cut up and robot-ize, so I tried making my own wooden model. This didn’t work out too well. So I finally settled for a papercraft model. I couldn’t find a papercraft version of it, so I made my own from pictures. This is a non-transforming model, being so small, but I will some day build a larger scale, fully functional version. I have all the swivels and hinges mapped out (in my head), it’s just a matter of sitting down and doing it.

Someday.
