Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) is absolutely a staple in the NYS and east coast eco-garden. A good choice in any garden situation: Lobelia siphilitica can grow in wet soils such as a rain garden setting, and yet the plant even has quite a bit of drought tolerance. Blue Lobelia grows extremely well from seed. Each plant produces hundreds of thousands of tiny seeds every year. They are the size of grains of sand, and so lightweight! The copious amount of seeds feed our region’s songbirds in early winter, and the plant persists in the ecosystem well by seed.
