More trouble for Delta teacher Police announce Robin Wait is now facing four charges stemming from a pair of alleged sexual assaults BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Delta police Thursday released the name of the Delta Secondary teacher who is now facing charges in connection with a pair of alleged sexual assaults. Robin Wait, 43, is facing two

charges of sexual interference of a person under 16 and two counts of sexual assault stemming from a Nov. 4 incident as well as one that occurred in May. Police were called to the Ladner high school Nov. 4 after a young girl reported she had been assaulted by an unknown adult

near the school gym. After launching an investigation into the allegation, police arrested Wait on Nov. 6. Police spokesperson Const. Ciaran Feenan said the earlier incident, which prompted the second set of charges, came to light during the initial investigation.

The teacher was immediately suspended with pay upon his arrest, said Delta school district spokesperson Deneka Michaud. She said his suspension would be reviewed as the case progresses. Michaud also said the district would launch an investigation once given police approval.

Wait has been released on bail on a number of conditions, including no contact with the victims or any witnesses, and that he not seek, obtain or continue any employment, or volunteer, in a capacity that involves being in a position of trust or authority of anyone under the age of 16.

Fraser Health not ready to give up on pay parking at hospital BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Fraser Health hasn’t given up trying to implement pay parking at Delta Hospital. Spokesperson Roy ThorpeForward said the region has a study underway looking at demand at the hospital and

potential solutions to address the municipality’s concern about overflow in nearby areas. The region should have the study completed and presented to Delta council next spring, he noted. Hospital pay parking has been in the news recently after a Canadian Medical Association

Journal editorial by Dr. Rajendra Kale stated pay parking charges are just “user fees in disguise” that flout the Canada Health Act. The editorial advocated abolishing parking fees for patients. Adding to the controversy were reports that B.C. hospitals and health authorities netted $23.8 million (Fraser Health collecting

$14 million) last year in parking revenues from patients, visitors and employees. Delta council made a pre-emptive strike against Fraser Health last year by giving final approval to a bylaw banning pay parking at Delta Hospital that was originally introduced six years earlier. At the time the bylaw was

rushed through, Delta CAO George Harvie said he and the mayor had inquiries from the health authority about revenue opportunities, including the possibility of introducing pay parking at the Ladner hospital. He said the bylaw was needed

Public backs crime bill: Findlay

Rookie Conservative MP says Canadians want to see sentences that are commensurate with the offence

drug crime, cracks down on young offenders and will take away the option of house arrest for those who have been convicted of serious violent and property crimes and crimes such as sexual assault, human trafficking, child-luring and kidnapping. Findlay said what’s lost in the opposition rhetoric is there has to be aggravating factors for minimum mandatory penalties, including if someone is proven by the sentencing stage to be trafficking drugs with threats of violence or using vio-

lence, or targeting youth or using children to sell drugs. Findlay said the legislation isn’t aimed at creating harsher sentences for every crime that’s committed. “It’s actually very eloquent in the sense that it’s very targeted legislation aimed at serious crime. So there’s a large part of it aimed at those who would exploit children and we did get good support from the opposition on those offences... we had to bring it into the modern era, such as people talking to children to lure them on the Internet.”

The crime bill has been controversial as the opposition parties accused the Tories of fast tracking the legislation. The government was also accused of focusing only on incarceration. More recent criticism has focused on the costs for provincial governments. The government says the bill will cost the federal treasury an extra $78.6 million over five years, but it’s not clear how much extra the provinces will have to pay, especially when it comes to court time and building prisons to house

more inmates. Both Ontario and Quebec are taking a hard stand against the potential costs, but B.C. Premier Christy Clark recently told the legislature she supports the crime bill. Findlay said costs are part of the ongoing dialogue between Ottawa and the provinces, adding the provinces had asked for these types of reforms. NDP MLA Guy Gentner, the former Delta councillor who now represents Delta North, isn’t impressed with the federal government’s approach, saying the justice system won’t be equipped to deal with the changes. “I’ve heard the premier say, and we don’t disagree, there’s a need to get tough on crime, above all violent crimes against citizens. But I have to ask the question about the dismal lack of funding for legal aid services in the provinces. In Delta we witnessed the closure of the family court in 2002, we’ve seen money taken away from victims’ services in this province, so how will the bill be downloaded on us?” The crime bill, which had a number of last-minute amendments, is now headed to the Senate.

$440,000. Murray said he’s hoping both sides could find “mutually agreeable solutions.” Health region officials would go on to meet with Delta councillors regarding the issue and were told that the municipality doesn’t want to change its bylaw. Coun. Robert Campbell told the Optimist last week, “We’ve pretty much told them (Fraser Health) no for a number of reasons. They haven’t got back to us.”

One of the points in the FHA’s case is there isn’t enough parking for patients and staff, said Campbell, who noted the health region owns enough land around the hospital to easily create a gravel parking lot for staff if needed. He noted that in addition to the principle of charging patients and family to park at the community’s hospital, another major concern is a spillover onto adjacent streets and at the Ladner

Leisure Centre and Delta Sport Development Centre lots. Campbell said he doesn’t see how the health region can come up with a solution for that. Asked about the possibility the government would impose pay parking on Delta on behalf of the health region, Campbell doubted the province would resort to that tactic. Elaine Canning, past president of the Delta

Hospital Auxiliary, said the position of the volunteer auxiliary hasn’t changed when it comes to pay parking. “This dates back many years ago to a gentleman’s agreement. This is all about the care and comfort of patients in Delta Hospital and if they’re stressed out about pay parking or how they can visit their family on a daily basis, it’s certainly a major burden on them,” said Canning.

SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay says the public strongly supports her government’s new omnibus crime bill, which was passed by the House of Commons on Monday. “We’ve had very positive feedback from the public. I’m not hearing the same things from the public, generally, as we do from the opposition because a lot of people feel sentences need to be commensurate with the severity of the crimes,” she told the Optimist. “It’s hard for the general public to understand how someone who is a violent or repeat offender could be given house arrest or conditional sentences, so the idea of treating serious crime for what it is seems to resonate with the public.” Findlay, a rookie Conservative MP, has been deeply involved with the legislation, introduced by her majority government following its election win earlier this year. A lawyer who was appointed parliamentary secretary to the minister of justice, Findlay is the vicechair of a justice committee that went over the compre-

Conservative MPs, including Kerry-Lynne Findlay (right), distributed a flyer (left) that was also a survey asking people which party they felt was on the right track when it comes to keeping Canadians safe. The Tory crime bill is now headed to the Senate. hensive bill, hearing from dozens of witnesses. The Safe Streets and Communities Act comprises nine individual justice bills that died when the Conservatives only had a minority government. Those bills are now bundled into one sweeping piece of legislation. When it was introduced, Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said the legislation includes measures to protect children from sexual offenders by setting mandatory minimum penalties. It also targets organized

PARKING from page 1 because the health authority had the ability to install parking meters. If a bylaw was passed after meters were installed, the meters could have remained, becoming a legal non-conforming use. At the time, a health region official pointed out Delta already has pay parking at the Tsawwasen ferry terminal.

Mission also passed a bylaw prohibiting pay parking at its hospital, making it the only other community in the Lower Mainland not to charge hospital parking fees. At a public meeting in Ladner last year, Fraser Health CEO Dr. Nigel Murray said Delta’s ban has resulted in an estimated annual revenue loss of

She agreed with Saip, adding the board will continue to rely on input from the community and education partners. The trustees agreed to hold off naming members to various committees until they’ve discussed what those committees are all about with the district

departments. Following the election, Dixon told the Optimist that while the district faces budget challenges due to declining enrollment, it would strive to maintain an excellent reputation. According to recently released statistics by the Ministry of Education, the high school completion rate (within six years of starting Grade 8) for public students in Delta was 84.8 per cent in 2010/11, above the B.C. average of 80.3 per cent.

Community helps to fill 350 stockings Bounty from Tsa. Town Centre Mall program delivered to Deltassist for distribution to low-income families Over 350 stockings were filled as part of the 15th annual Stocking for Kids program this year. “Two overflowing truck loads were delivered to Deltassist,” said Shannon Taylor, promotions manager at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. The mall and the Delta Optimist sponsor the program. Many groups, organizations, and individuals supported this program by adopting a stocking or stockings. Local moms Sonja White and Tiffinie Hammerer took 150 stockings to distribute among their friends and family members while the

TOOBs, Holly Elementary and a local church also filled numerous stockings, Taylor noted. “These groups did a tremendous job, but we also thank the individual contributors,” she said. “Every toy in every stocking is greatly appreciated and will be sure to make a little boy or girl very happy this Christmas!” The program makes an appeal to the community to sponsor a stocking with a designated gender and age, fill it with appropriate new gifts and return it to the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall for distribution by Deltassist Family and Community Services.

MURPHY’S LAW I can’t help but think of the irony every time Vicki Huntington comes to the defence of Delta’s farmland. I’m impressed by the principled stance the independent MLA for Delta South takes in the face of what seems like a never-ending industrial onslaught, however, I immediately turn my thoughts to provincial election ramifications each time I see her go to bat on behalf of this municipality’s fertile soil and those who farm it. Huntington continually sounds the alarm over the impacts that port development at Roberts Bank, including rail lines, roadways and possibly even a foreign trade zone, is having on adjacent farmland. She welcomes increased funding for the Agricultural Land Commission, but warns it’s not enough to adequately protect this valuable resource. Huntington has brought her pro-farmland stance, honed over 15 years at the Delta council table, to Victoria, which has afforded her a bigger stage to publicize an issue she holds near and dear. You would think her efforts would have made her the darling of Delta’s agricultural community, a lock to receive its support when provincial voters go to the polls 18 months (or sooner) from now. Something tells me that won’t be the case. Presuming Kelly Guichon receives the Liberal party nomination in Delta South, it’s a good bet the local farming community will line up solidly behind her. Farmers in these parts have historically supported the right of centre parties and have even become their flag bearers (think John Savage and Val Roddick). What’s more, Guichon is one of their own, married to Pete Guichon, whose pioneering family has been cultivating these lands for well over a century. Huntington didn’t necessarily get the farming community’s support back in 2009 when she edged Liberal cabinet minister Wally Oppal and I’m sure she realizes it will be another uphill battle in that regard with Kelly Guichon quite possibly in the mix this time. I find there’s more than a little irony in the notion that she’s fighting to preserve an industry that might not be in her corner come election time, but I think that speaks to her values, to how she will continue to stand up for what she believes in even if it isn’t politically expedient. Huntington has won many converts with that principled stance and others over the years, but it’s a paradox indeed that this pro-agriculture MLA finds that her support at the ballot box will come from somewhere other than down on the farm.

COMMUNITY COMMENT You hear a lot about retail sales and quarterly numbers from manufacturers at this time of year. Mandarin oranges seem to arrive earlier and advertising for preChristmas “blowout” sales events fill the radio waves, plaster our TVs and stuff our newspapers. Ah, the holiday season is upon us, like it or not. Getting a Mandarin orange into your stomach isn’t as easy as it seems. Many people are paid and have to work hard so this gastronomic feat can be accomplished. Several weeks ago, farmers in China, Japan and elsewhere began harvesting oranges. Paid workers put them in boxes, stacked them on pallets, loaded them onto trucks and trains, and delivered them to ports where they were placed in containers and stowed on freighters for their long journey to our mouths.

When the freighters arrive here, paid longshoremen remove the cargo and assemble the containers so truck drivers (also paid) can deliver them to grocery stores so paid clerks can put them out on display so you and I can buy them with money we have earned and check them out at the cashier who is being paid by the business owner. Hoping Santa gets you an iPad this Christmas? Same process. The devices are manufactured by workers in China and are delivered to London Drugs and Best Buy where a whole new group of people gets paid to help us buy stuff. What does all this crazy commerce mean? It means the cashiers, the truck drivers and everybody else in the supply chain can pay for housing, food and maybe some presents for their kids. The importance of jobs, logistics, trade infrastructure and a strong economy cannot be underestimated or taken for granted in British Columbia. You may or may not appreciate this reality but it ensures our quality of life in Canada is maintained. Think about this every time you buy something, especially at Christmas. As of yet, I haven’t really par-

ticipated in the economic chain this season. As usual, with two weeks to go until the big day, I have not bought one Christmas present. I have purchased a brick of cheddar cheese, some fire logs and way too many replacement bulbs for my antiquated Christmas lights. I have recorded a few Christmas TV shows and pulled decorations out of storage. Baby steps. I like Christmas, I really do. As the old saying goes, I liked it better when I was a kid, I suppose. I love being with my extended family for a couple of days and I really like playing with the little ones toys on Christmas afternoon. I will enjoy a contemplative beach walk while the 25-pounder is in the oven and I will smile when I am seated in some weird desk chair as we all squeeze in around a diligently crafted dining table. I will also enjoy my post feast walk through the old stomping grounds and remind myself of all the wonderful times I have had with my family and friends. I will take a moment, standing in the chilly night, to appreciate simplicity and wish that there were more of it. I wish I could grow my own oranges.

Failing grade for solution

Editor: I received my children’s report cards today, and the reality was brought to bear as I looked at the blank page. What a complete and utter waste of everyone’s time, money and effort. It absolutely astounds me the people that taxpayers support continue to tell us they’re doing all they can, that they have our best interests at the forefront and that our tax dollars aren’t being wasted. Please stop with the propaganda, as we are not listening. Actions speak louder than words! If this sort of behaviour, and lack of performance and competence, were demonstrated in the private sector, you would all be fired and replaced by people that can get the job done.

Let me remind you we are paying your salary, and we expect much better from you. For Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer to say this job action won’t affect students is a bad joke. I’ve not met my kids’ teachers this year, as they’re not allowed to hold parent/teacher interviews. How do I discuss where my kids are at, and how I can help them improve with no record of where they stand, and not facility for discussion? This is affecting the kids in a very negative way. This dispute is demonstrating that “grown-ups” have not learned anything through their significant education, and are incapable of working toward a solution to a

relatively simple problem. I, along with the majority of this province, am so sick and tired of how long it takes for you people to accomplish anything. Stop arguing, work together and find a solution like you’re paid to do. And do it now! For the government: I’ve never voted NDP in my life. I’ve always supported your party, and I can’t imagine casting a vote for a party I disagree with so adamantly, but you’re pushing me that way. Gordon Campbell started pushing, and you’re doing absolutely nothing to bring me back. I really thought Christy Clark was the answer, but I’m not seeing it happen. I am far from the only voter feeling this way. Ken Crarer

Owners shouldn’t walk their dogs at the cemetery Posted signs forbid dogs in this area. Last Saturday was the 18th anniversary of our son’s death. When my wife visited the gravesite, there was a pile of dog poo close to our son’s grave marker. Have dog owners lost all

sense of respect for loved ones who are buried there? Is there no shame in dog owners? What this is is a total lack of respect for those loved ones who have passed on, whether young or old. Shame on you. Bart Mann

• According to ICBC stats, 41 per cent of vehicle, 53 per cent of pedestrian and 55 per cent of bicycle accidents occur at intersections. • Statistics show headon and right angle crashes (main cause of injury and death) completely disappear at roundabouts. • Heavy pedestrian traffic is handled more safely with roundabouts. • Traffic flow is greatly enhanced. Benefits are better movement of traffic, fuel savings and a reduction in air pollution of up to 42 per cent. • Roundabouts do not necessarily require more space to construct than signalled intersections and

do not require the huge expenditures required for overpasses. (Many of these facts come from the Insurance Institute of America.) There are several existing intersections that instantly come to mind that could benefit from the installation of roundabouts, including: • The planned reconstruction of the Arthur Drive and Ladner Trunk Road. • Highway 10 and Hornby Drive. • The proposed intersection of Highway 17 and 52nd Street as shown in the plans for the Tsawwassen First Nation development. • Highway 17 and 56th Street in Tsawwassen. Editor: Re: Roundabouts, not traffic lights, letter to the editor, Dec. 2 I was reminded of the subject of public safety yesterday after witnessing a serious crash at a Ladner Trunk Road intersection. Adrian Wightman’s letter also reminded me there might be some outstanding opportunities to improve our traffic situation and the safety of our residents going forward utilizing roundabouts. The arguments for the use of roundabouts seem very compelling. As Delta is a leader in innovative solutions, I respectfully request Delta council consider the following information:

Delta should voice opposition to smart meters Editor: Re: Delta stymied on smart meters, Dec. 2 For clarification sake, I would like readers to know I oppose a smart meter being installed on my property and in reference to this article, I still have the original/old meter on my property. I have written Corix/B.C. Hydro, the provincial government and Delta indicating I do not want a smart meter installed (along with posting a notice on my current meter that I do not

want Corix trespassing on my property). Research indicates these meters pose a health hazard, so the precautionary principle should, again, be applied in this situation. In the same letter, I also indicated I do not want my tax dollars spent on an unnecessary, $1 billion program, money this government does not have, nor do I want my privacy invaded. The original meter I have works fine and there is no reason whatsoever to replace it at taxpayers’

expense. While Delta might claim there is nothing it can do, I disagree. It should continue to voice its opposition to these meters on our behalf, just like numerous other municipalities have done and continue to do. Thousands of people across B.C. have written the government opposing this program and as usual, this current Liberal government does not listen. Heather Colls Mothers Against Power Poles

Kinsmen continue support of Reach

Latest donation to fund therapy

Reach Child and Youth Development Society recently received a $1,000 donation from the Kinsmen Club of Ladner/Tsawwassen towards its therapy programs. The donation will help provide therapy to children in Delta who are on the waitlist. Reach provides specialized speech and language, physio and occupational therapy to children with special needs from birth to age six in Delta. Recently there were 105 Delta children on the waitlist to receive speech, occupational and physiotherapy services. Reach fundraises for additional dollars that will help provide therapy to children in important early years when they need it, rather than place those children on waitlists and miss critical opportunities in children’s development. “This funding from the Kinsmen Club is so important to Reach and the families we support,” said executive director Renie D’Aquila. “It allows us to intervene early in more children’s lives. “By doing this we provide the greatest long term benefit to the child, the family and society as a whole.” The Kinsmen Club of Ladner/Tsawwassen has been a longtime supporter of Reach, and is currently in partnership with Reach

in the project to build a child development centre in the heart of Ladner. The centre will be located at the current location of Kinsmen House next to the Ladner Pioneer Library. The cost of the new building will be approximately $4 million and will

come from fundraising in the community. For more information about Reach Child and Youth Development Society programs and services, or to learn more about the new building project, visit www. reachdevelopment.org or call 604-946-6622.

Civic employees raise $60,000 for United Way The Corporation of Delta’s employees raised $60,122.72 for the 2011 United Way campaign, Delta’s most successful fundraising effort to date. Mayor Lois Jackson and Delta’s United Way co-chairs, Kate Steel and Jake Gentles, presented the cheque to the United Way last week. “The dedication of our employees to this worthwhile organization is truly exceptional,” said Jackson. “Delta’s successful campaign is another example of staff’s unwavering commitment to the United Way and making a positive impact on individuals in our community.” Jackson, Delta council members and CAO George Harvie thanked Delta’s United Way cochairs, the United Way committee, CUPE Local 454, Delta Managerial Society and all Delta employees for their efforts and enthusiasm in this year’s campaign. This is the sixth consecutive year Delta has exceeded its fundraising goal.

BREAKING NEWS ALERTS

image we all wish for every year, but unfortunately not everyone experiences it. So perhaps it’s time to take a page from Stewart’s script and realize that all of us can impact the world around us. We may think of ourselves as unimportant or ineffective in daily tasks, but to do so is to call forth the angel named Clarence to remind us we do make a difference in God’s world for we have been blessed with God’s gift. The gift is to continue a long tradition of faithful people saying as the angels said: “Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

It’s a Wonderful Life! Do you make this movie classic part of your seasonal tradition? The movie is based on the short story, The Greatest Gift, written by Philip Stern, while the film stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey. In the movie, George is a man who is full of despair on Christmas Eve. On a snowy road he meets his guardian angel, Clarence, who shows George all the lives he has touched and the contributions he has made to his community. There are, of course, lots of traditions we celebrate every year. Carols singing out in the night and presents neatly tucked under a tree in the excitement of joy and a feeling of peace. At least this is the romantic

handful of local bands are coming together to put on a food drive show at the Tsawwassen Legion next Friday. “It’ll be a really, really good rockin’ time. Hopefully we get lots of people out and throw a big Christmas party,” says Jordan Field, lead singer for Six to Midnight, one of the groups that will be performing. Field says it’s good to give back to the community and that it’s fun playing shows for a good cause. Donated food will go to Deltassist’s Christmas hamper program, an annual effort to help local lowincome families during the holiday season. Six to Midnight, which plays a style of rock infused with soul, pop and a hint of blues, has been staying busy with shows in Vancouver, recently creating a music video and putting together a new website (sixtomidnight. ca). The four-piece, which formed in 2008 and has a self-titled EP out, is comprised of Field, guitarist Daryn Davies, bassist Evan

StrangeFruit, made up of Evan Findlay (vocals, guitar), Conor Watts (bassist, vocals) and Bryson Dodwell (drums), plays a brand of “intellectual rock n’ roll.” Between Takes is composed up of vocalist/guitarist Mark Pocock, lead guitarist Andrew Laing, bass player Sam Buchanan and drummer Amanda Hamilton. The group released a self-titled, fivesong EP in the fall of 2010 and for two years running placed in the top 20 in the 99.3 The Fox Vancouver Seeds contest. Between Takes, which lists The Goo Goo Dolls, Our Lady Peace, Oasis and The Matthew Good Band among its influences, was also named a “Best of B.C band” by 95.3 Virgin Radio, earning radio play for their single, “see you again.” The food drive show is set for Friday, Dec. 16 at the Tsawwassen Legion. Doors are at 8 p.m. Admission (must be 19 or older) is a minimum of two non-perishable food items.

Taking in Norway’s natural beauty Full day excursion encompasses train, bus and boat trips MARGARET DEEFHOLTS Optimist contributor

The bus is angled so steeply I have to push my palms against the back of the seat in front of me to keep from sliding forward. As the vehicle lurches around another tight bend, houses like miniature Lego blocks of blue, yellow and green appear in the valley far below. On the horizon, a fjord winds between a cleft of blue-grey mountains. A group of us are on the Stalheimskleiva, one of the steepest roads in Northern Europe and this is the second stage of Norway in a Nutshell, a full day’s excursion between Bergen and Oslo, which encompasses three train trips, a bus journey and a boat cruise. Up to this point, there haven’t been any whiteknuckled moments. The train climbing up from Bergen to the alpine town of Voss went through meadows dotted with yellow

flowers, pebbled streams and flocks of bearded goats that glanced incuriously at us as we flew by. Although the early morning sky was eggshell blue when we left Bergen, by the time we dismounted at Voss, small, fat pillows of cloud had begun to materialize. Half an hour later at the Stalheim Hotel, where our tour bus halted for a short break, greyer skies and the fresh alpine air meant donning fleecy jackets. Having negotiated all 13 corkscrew twists down the Stalheimskleiva, the bus now comes to a halt at the Gudvangen dock. The Noeroyfjord inlet that lies ahead is silver-rippled under a pale sky, and as the name suggests, this is the narrowest fjord in North Europe — a mere 250 metres wide at its tightest passageway. As we pull away from the jetty, the light playing on the water and the smudged

outlines of distant peaks lends a dreamlike quality to Noeroyfjord, and an artist, rain slicker drawn around him, takes shelter under an awning on the deck. Using deft charcoal strokes, he creates a chiaroscuro sketch of the inlet hemmed in by soaring cliffs, their summits wreathed in chiffon mist. We dock at Aurlands where half-timbered houses with steep pitched roofs and window boxes filled with scarlet geraniums line the quiet streets. At the sum-

mit of a neighbouring peak we dismount our bus and as we walk a projecting boardwalk, the sun breaks through in a brief but dazzling burst of brilliance. The view across Aurlandsfjord is quintessential Norway — deep blue waters spilling between mountains layered fold against fold against the sky. Falling away vertiginously below us are emerald fields, dotted with farmhouses; further to our left, the town of Aurlands is a cluster of

buildings lining the edge of the water. A short drive along shores of the inlet brings us to Flam. In contrast to the lonely splendour of Norway’s mountains and fjords, Flam’s waterfront is bustling with activity, the shops filled with tourists trying on Fair Isle sweaters, examining objets d’art and browsing through postcard displays. A monstrous cruise ship crouches at the dock. I pause to sip a cup of hot chocolate under the gaze of a large Norwegian troll with spiky hair and wicked eyes. The Flam Railway takes us through the next phase of our trip — to Myrdal. We travel in rapt silence, gazing at this land of rushing streams and flower embroidered meadows set against a backdrop of towering cliffs. Waterfalls range from pencil-thin silver etchings on bare rock to explosions of white water cascading hundreds of feet

to the valleys below. The train halts briefly, and passengers dismount onto a platform, coming face-to-face with the Kjosfossen Falls, thundering down and across five levels of rock face. Suddenly, almost like a wraith in the mist, a Norse maiden in medieval costume appears on a rocky outcrop half way down the falls and as the music swells above the roar of the water, she sings us a plaintive Norwegian folk melody. On our final leg from Myrdal to Oslo, I’m left with another image and a different song: the Hardangerjokulen glacier glimmering in the deepening twilight, accompanied by Solveig’s Song as it streams through my iPod. Christmas Presence, a concert of songs, poems and stories, is being presented at St. David’s Anglican Church in Tsawwassen Saturday night. Ladner resident Allen Desnoyers has put together the evening of music, drama and hilarity to benefit the Little House Society. Desnoyers, a musician, actor and playwright, and a co-founder of Vancouver’s Pacific Theatre, has put on many local and national productions. Desnoyers has traveled the country with some of his other, larger productions. Just this year he toured four provinces with The Klondike Rag, a musical about the Klondike gold rush. Taylor Dianne Robinson will be playing Gretl von Trapp in The Sound of Music for the second straight year. The eight-year-old from Tsawwassen says she’s feeling more comfortable with the part this time. “I was kind of nervous. It was the first time I’d been on stage with a lot of lines and a big role,” she said, talking about her experience last year in the musical. Robinson, who had the von Trapp role with a Burnaby theatre company last November, will be on a stage closer to home this year. The Sound of Music runs at Gateway Theatre (gatewaytheatre.com for

t’s fascinating to discover the varied and creative ways people interpret the traditions, colour and lights of Christmas. One friend doesn’t put up a tree, but fills her home with red poinsettias. Another plans to acquire some huge Christmas ornaments for her fig tree out in the garden. Not Christmas lights, which most of us have, but actual gold or silvercoloured globes, stars and typical Christmas shapes, nice and big so people arriving in her driveway would be sure to see them. A Burnaby gardener makes a small winter obe-

lisk for her doorway at Christmas. She begins with a tomato cage that has its legs plunged into a pot. She covers the wires with evergreen branches, holly or other winter berries and sometimes ornaments. Gardeners who enjoy containers filled with spring bulb-flowers can doubleup on the space opportunity by inserting decorative branches into the soil for Christmas festivities. The bulbs already planted in the pot must be large types (tulips or daffodils) because these can be planted five or six inches deep — deep enough for Christmas branches to sit securely without damaging any bulbs. Choices for the branches are immense: evergreens, holly, contorted branches or regular ones spray-painted in whatever colour fits the theme. Ornaments can be added and/or Christmas

Dakota was surrendered to the shelter as her owner moved into a home that did not allow pets. She has never lived with children or dogs, though she somewhat tolerated cats living with her. Dakota takes time to get to know new people and can sometimes be a little aggressive if she is unsure. She is definitely a "less is more" kind of cat and should go to a quiet, loving and peaceful home.

lights. People with almost no garden can assemble this arrangement in a couple of hours with a trip to their garden centre or florist. Gardeners can use whatever harvest their garden offers. This could be: silver pods of lunaria, berrying branches, cedar, fir or pine stems, contorted hazel, stems of Chinese lanterns or cones, either spray painted gold or silver or given gold or silver tips. One of the most giving and entertaining trees for the Christmas garden is a one offering treats for birds. Any tree that neighbourhood birds are familiar with can be used as a base. Or an evergreen tree can be bought. It’s helpful if it has widely-spaced branches where birds can perch. The treats can be either home-made or bought. The advantage of buying some

things, like birdseed cakes, especially from stores specializing in bird things, is the guidance available there about which birds like which foods. But many things can be homemade. These include cranberries or raisins strung into garlands. Unsalted popcorn strings can be easily made if the popcorn is a day old and slightly softened. Peanuts are also popular with chickadees and jays, and apparently more so if they can be halved before being strung. Another treat is peanut butter spread into pine cones. Much of this is likely to attract squirrels as well. But since it’s the season of peace and goodwill (and since squirrels are so hard to discourage), maybe we should take the high road and give them an amnesty. Some of the features of bird trees were also part of pioneer Christmas trees in North America. Strings of raisins and popcorn were popular and so were homemade cookies, gingerbread figures and candy canes. Hungry pioneer children would snack on these decorations during Christmas celebrations until everything edible vanished. Other homemade decorations included dolls and balls made of straw, corn husk dolls, decorations of ribbon and yarn, and carved wooden toys. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Concert to benefit lifeboat group ‘Music Through the Ages’ is the theme for tonight’s Christmas performance

Familiar tunes and Christmas music through the ages will fill the air at a fundraising Christmas concert tonight. With the theme of Music Through The Ages, the Delta Concert Band and the Delta Youth Orchestra will be on stage at Genesis Theatre in Ladner. There will also be a guest appearance by internationally known and celebrated concert pianist, Anthony Lee. He will bring a sophisticated touch to the concert with a beautiful concerto on the grand piano. The concert will also honour a beloved founder of the Delta Concert Band, the late Edgar Dunning, with one of his favourite numbers. The two ensembles will have close to 100 musicians on stage playing in unison for some numbers, which will be a powerful, harmonious sound experience for the audience. This concert will be

the second annual fundraiser for the Roberts Bank

Lifeboat Delta Station Society, which operates the

100 per cent volunteer community lifeboat based in

Ladner Harbour. A group of profession-

ally trained, dedicated volunteer crewmen need your support to help provide an essential service to boaters, fishers, float home residents and riverfront businesses. Funds raised contribute to fuel, training, equipment and maintenance to operate the 38-foot, all-weather lifeboat. The boat is equipped with the very latest in marine electronics. The vessel is an important asset to assist Delta fire, police and engineering tackle tasks in Delta’s waters. The crew also helps out with many community events such as cooking for Ladner’s Breakfast with Santa. Tickets are $20 and are available at the following stores: Ladner Cruise & Travel Centre, Glacier Beer and Wine, Grapes 4 U and the Telus Open Connection stores in Ladner and Tsawwassen, as well as at the door. The curtain goes up at 7 p.m. Call 604-946-7641.

Artist continuing efforts to aid homeless animals PHOTO BY

JESSICA KERR

Local professional artist Michael Duncan (left), who founded A-haa (Artists Helping Abused Animals), presents a cheque for more than $2,400 to Tina Gemeinhardt, vet and owner at Tsawwassen Animal Hospital. The money will go to benefit the Delta Homeless Animal Fund, which funds care and treatment for abandoned and stray animals. The money donated will help dogs like Coco, an 18-month-old chocolate Lab cross that was rescued from a “high kill” shelter in the U.S. by Delta-based organization Out of the Dog House Rescue. Coco is currently being treated for heartworm at the Tsawwassen Animal Hospital and will go to a new home in the new year. Duncan has been raising money for A-haa through the sale of his Heritage Scene of Delta series of pen and ink original works. Each piece sells for $200 and all the money goes to A-haa. For more information or to volunteer with A-haa, call Michael Duncan at 604-948-0301.

Pet photos with Santa to benefit shelter donation of $5. Angela of Christmas for the Critters will be there with her spokesdog, Susie. Staff and volunteers of the animal shelter will be there as well to answer questions on adoptions. The fundraiser is sched-

uled to run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bosley’s, 1008047 Scott Rd. Christmas for the Critters is a North Delta-based charity drive to raise muchneeded items and supplies for the homeless animals at the shelter.

It3s that time of the year again New vehicle might be out of reach, but there;s plenty for the car buff on your list DAVID CHAO

Optimist contributor

The blessed season of Christmas is just around the corner, and it’s time to start looking for that perfect gift again. If that special person happens to be a car buff, I have some suggestions for you. Before you head over to the stores, however, it might be wise to find out a little bit about the person for whom you’re buying the gift. For example, it helps to know whether your friend, spouse — or whoever — has a passion for racing cars, exotic sports cars, or classic cars. Also, is he or she an import car lover, or loyal domestic car follower? So here they are, some gift ideas and where to find them:

Die Cast Miniature Models These high quality, scaled replicas of various automobiles from around the world are still one of the best automotive gifts to buy. Most range in sizes from 1/43 scale to 1/18 scale, with prices ranging from under $10 to as much as a few hundred dollars for collectors’ models. You can find model replicas of just about anything these days, from the trendy Fiat 500 to the traditional favourites like the Ford Mustang or Porsche 911 for as little as $10 to $15. These toys can be found at Costco or at your local toy store, but for the best selection, head over to Wilkinson’s Automobilia — a car buff’s dream store (located at 2531 Ontario St. just south of Broadway, telephone 604-873-6242 or

You can find a die cast miniature for just about any make and model these days.

a suitable online retailier. The kit models range from about $10 all the way up to $300 or more. If you want to encourage creativity, go for the Lego sets and let your friend or kids design their own cars. Car Care Accessories Many practical gifts can be found at discount stores, such as Canadian Tire and London Drugs. Portable plug-in car vacuum cleaners, electric polish/buffer machines, or rechargeable electric screwdrivers are just some of the examples. Car buffs are happy just receiving auto cleaning kits, which often include car washes and waxes. For best quality, go for genuine carnauba wax. If small is not your style, you can always splurge on an electric pressure washer.

My pick from Wilkinson’s? It’s the Lamborghini Aventador LP700 in fire orange ($56.95). Build-yourself-models If your friend likes to build things, perhaps a plastic model kit might be more appropriate, although it takes both patience and time to assemble some of them. While you will find many cheap plastic kits at department stores, it’s probably safer to buy them at hobby stores or at Wilkinson’s. Books Just about every type of book on cars, whether it’s on exotic cars or on race cars, can be found at many bookstores. Before you buy a book for your friend or family, however, find out his or her interest first — you don’t want to buy a book on Mustangs for a Ferrari fan. As with other gifts, the prices vary from affordable to expensive. Interesting item from Wilkinson’s — French Curves: Delahaye, Delage, Talbot-Lago, by Mullin Automotive Museum ($104.95). With previously unpublished vintage photographs, images and rare archival material, this book pays homage to the marques that represent streamlined movement era. The Mullen Automotive Museum holds the largest private collection in the world of French automobiles produced from 1902-1954. Advertising and Artwork A longtime favourite of car fanatics, artwork can be anything from vintage magazine advertising to limited edition lithographic prints. Some of these images have been digitally reproduced on archival paper while others are authentic originals. Imagine how good a collection of European car art or 1930s advertisements would look, neatly framed and hanging on the living room wall. Starting from as little as $10, you can find these items online at auction websites such as eBay or through search engines like Google. Just type in “automotive art” and you’ll be surprised at the number of results and choices that pop up. Of course, you will find many great artwork at Wilkinson’s.

When shopping for artwork online, you may want to begin by looking for reputable dealers in your local area so you can check out the merchandise firsthand. When buying from an eBay seller, verify their feedback and return policy to make sure you feel comfortable buying from a complete stranger through the internet. Apparel and Accessories Are you on a tight budget or simply looking for stocking stuffers? One of the best places to shop for automotive gifts is at the parts department of your local car dealers. Prices are quite reasonable and although the selection is not always great, you can find popular — and often affordable — accessories like key chains, umbrellas, calendars, posters, pins, and even T-shirts. Computer items Computer-related car gifts you can consider include various racing and driving software available. These software attempt to mimic the real driving experience through your computer screen, and are priced from about $30. Check out your local computer stores. Of course, if you have to go all the way, you might as well buy a new Xbox or PS3. There are many apps in iTunes that offer simulated driving experience too (you can always give itunes gift card). The Real Thing If you just can’t find anything suitable and you are a big spender, the solution is easy: get a real car for Christmas! OK, this might cause financial hardship, but if you were thinking of buying a car in the new year for your family anyways, you might want to just get the real thing.

Driving on winter tires saves lives Quebec experience shows accidents and injuries reduced by winter tire use Research conducted by the government of Quebec in the two years since winter tire use became universal in that province has proven conclusively what tire makers have long known: driving on winter tires saves lives and reduces serious injuries. The 2011 study, which

compared Quebec road accident statistics before and after winter tire use became required, shows that in the past two winters there has been a five per cent reduction in road-accident injuries that can be directly attributed to winter tire use. The research concludes that widespread use of win-

ter tires has prevented about 575 road-accident injuries per winter in Quebec. The study also found vehicle accidents resulting in death or serious injury declined by three per cent. “When people ride on winter tires, road-accident fatalities and injuries decrease,” says Glenn

Maidment, president of the Rubber Association of Canada, which represents tire makers. “Considering that only 51 per cent of Canadian motorists use winter tires, the Quebec experience should give us all pause for thought. There now can be absolutely no doubt that

New look Hawks extend win streak to four Pacific International Junior Hockey League team adds more youth to its line-up at the expense of some veterans The Delta Ice Hawks are hoping a mid-season injection of youth will help close the gap between themselves and the Richmond Sockeyes for top spot in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League. The Ice Hawks have sacrificed some of their experience to add four new players to the line-up in the past 10 days. The club released veteran goaltender Doug Birks and replaced him with South Delta Minor Hockey alumni Alex Anhert who made his debut in the Ice Hawks’ 8-5 win over Ridge Meadows on Tuesday night. The 18-year-old stopper was acquired from the North Delta Devils in exchange for 20-year-old forward Sam Vikich who had produced 18 points in 21 games. Birks had become expendable with the emergence of rookie Glenn Ferguson as the team’s number one stopper. “It didn’t make a lot of sense for Doug to be a back-up in his final year of junior hockey,” explained Peter Zerbinos, the Ice Hawks director of hockey operations. “At the same time, we are almost certain to lose Glenn to the B.C. Hockey League next season. Alex is a South Delta kid who could be back with us.” Another 18-year-old local product making an impact is forward Grange Gordon, recently acquired from the Grandview Steelers. The Ladner native had a three point

Delta Ice Hawks Markus Nelson, Cody Larsen and goalie Alex Anhert fend off Ridge Meadows Danny Brandys during Tuesday’s 8-5 win. night against Ridge Meadows, including a pair of goals. He now has three goals in four games Delta after scoring once in 10 with the Steelers. Also making an instant impression are 17-year-old twins Spencer and Scott McHaffie who have combined for 10 points in three

straight wins since joining Delta. To make room for the newcomers, injured veteran forward David Kemp was moved to the inactive list, while the club is still carrying two additional forwards and one extra defenceman. Zerbinos insists the moves weren’t made to specifically make the team younger

but rather were part of an ongoing process. “(Head coach) Dave (McLellan) sit down after each game and grade our players,” he said. “This is about helping make us a better hockey team. “Carrying extra players is also going to create a competitive environment within the club.”

Four straight wins have pulled the Hawks within four points of the Sockeyes with the defending champs still enjoying two games in hand. The teams will meet next Thursday in Richmond. Delta also visits Port Moody on Saturday night and hosts North Vancouver on Tuesday.

Elite league status means challenging road ahead for Pacers MARK BOOTH

It hardly seems like a suitable parting gift for one of the most successful girls basketball teams to come through Delta secondary in the past 25 years. When a decision was made to create a new 12-team elite tier in the Fraser Valley senior girls league this season, the Delta Pacers were included thanks to a moderately successful 2010-11 campaign and the fact most of

their key players were returning. What it means is the Ladner school will be getting a steady douse of the top teams in the province, with seven from the Valley in the latest top 15 rankings including No. 1 Riverside and No. 2 Brookswood who will be visiting DSS on Tuesday night. Reality is the Pacers find themselves in no man’s land. They are a small group of multi-talented athletes who have enjoyed plenty of success in younger grades, appearing in three

Tides at Tsawwassen Pacific Standard Time. Height in feet

straight provincial tournaments and finishing second at the Fraser Valley Junior Championships two years ago. But to compete with the heavyweights of senior girls basketball in B.C. is an entirely different plateau — one that requires a much deeper talent base and basketball being a player’s sole focus for 12 months of the year. “I love my girls to death but they have a lot going on in their lives right now and there are probably only two where I can say basketball is their passion,” said

coach Kerrie Trotman who has been with the core of the team since it steamrolled through Delta League play in Grade 8. “We’re in a situation where every game is going to be an immense challenge just trying to compete at that level.” The Pacers got a douse of what they are in for at last week’s 16team Century 21 Tournament at Mouat secondary in Abbotsford where they dropped three of four games to finish 12th, including a 61-35 opening round loss to

Riverside. That’s why Trotman is looking forward to this weekend’s Delta Police Tournament at Delview secondary where the Pacers are expecting to dominate as the lone tier one entry. She will be getting plenty of mileage this season out of four key players — Hayley FlowerAinge, Jesse Holowaty, Tessa Vincent and her own daughter Megan Trotman who typically leads the team in scoring each year.

GIVE ‘EM SOMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT…

South Delta Storm Bantam A2 hockey team traveled to Victoria for the Remembrance Day Classic Tournament, Nov. 11-13. The Storm advanced to the final after finishing in top spot in roundrobin play with a 2-0-1 record. The gold medal game was a rematch with the second place Triport Eagles. The initial battle was a nail biter with the Storm pulling out the victory on Jordan Hamming’s goal in the final minute of play to clinch first place. This time, it was all South Delta in a convincing 5-1 win. The Storm is also 3-3-2 in Pacific Coast tier five league play which includes a 3-1 home ice win over Surrey last week. Pacers topple Wildcats

Former Delta Ice Hawk standout Kye Benjaminsen was named the BCIHL Rookie of the Month for November after putting up six goals and three assists in five games for the Trinity Western University Spartans. The South Delta native had a point in all five games and enters the Christmas break second on the Spartans in scoring with seven goals and seven assists in 14 games. Benjaminsen had three multi-point games,

though none were more impressive than his three-point effort on Nov. 25 when he led the Spartans to a 3-3 tie after trailing Eastern Washington 3-0 going into the third period. Benjaminsen has now registered a point in all but three of the Spartans games. The Spartans are 3-8-2 on the season and are currently fifth in the BCIHL. They return to the ice Jan. 20 when they host Eastern Washington at 7 p.m.

Reid, Robert Young (Bob) Sept 25, 1922-Dec 4, 2011 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Reid, beloved husband of Isobel; father of Gordon (wife Ruby), Robert (wife Renee) and Elaine (husband Brian); and adored Granda to Amanda, Chelsea, Matthew, Spencer, Brooke & Kate. Bob was born in Ellon, Scotland and Ad#: emigrated to Canada in 1951. After spending 5 years in Ocean Falls, he settled in the Lower Mainland, working at UBC until his retirement in 1987. Despite his struggles with congestive heart failure in recent years, he was always grateful for the love and kindness of his family and friends. His will and determination have been an inspiration to all who knew him. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Delta Hospital who so lovingly cared for Bob in his final months. A memorial service to honour and celebrate Bob's life will be held on Monday December 12, at 2:00 pm at Ladner United Church with a reception to follow. Flowers are gratefully declined; however, donations to the Delta Hospital Foundation, Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice, would be greatly appreciated.

Bartram, Patricia August 5, 1941 - Dec 4, 2011 It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Patricia after a sudden and brief battle with cancer. Pat is survived by her husband John, children Valerie, Larry (Kim), and Lynda (Joseph), sister Alice, and grandchildren Chantelle, Michael, Matthew, Daniel and Lindsey, as well as numerous relatives and friends. She is predeceased by her sisters Kay and Faye, and brother Joe. Born and raised in Neerlandia, Pat came to Ladner as a teenager, where she worked many years at the local Co-op, raised a family, and volunteered throughout the community. Always friendly, compassionate, full of kindness and quick to smile and laugh, she will be missed by all who met her. Her family will particularly miss her warmth, strength, love, sense of humour, and appreciation of everything beautiful. Special thanks to the palliative care doctors, nurses, and counsellors at Delta Hospital. Please join us for a celebration of Patricia's life on January 8th at McKee House from 1-4pm. MILNE - Helena Mary (Christoff) Dec. 25th, 1931 - Nov. 30th, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helena after a lengthy illness. Helena is survived by her loving husband (Tom), step-son (Tom), brother John, sister Ruth (Reg), aunt Doris and numerous niece’s, cousin’s, extended family members and friends. A celebration of Helena’s life will be held on December 16th from 2 to 4 PM at the McKee House Senior Society, 5155 47th Avenue, Delta, British Columbia. In lieu of flowers it is requested that donations be made to the Canadian Lung Association.

Yule, Vlasta 'Cusie' To My Girl

Vlasta was born August 15, 1953 in Ljubljana, Slovenia and passed into the next world December 3, 2011 at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, BC. She was born with an abundance of energy and was known as 'Hurricane' in the small village of Borovnica where she lived until she moved to Vancouver, BC on October 15, 1967 (which is my birthday). Vlasta and I met in 1970, moved in together in 1971 and married March 16, 1974. Our first trip to Europe for five months in 1972 led to a lifetime of travel throughout the world that was a major part of our life together. Soon after we were married, Vlasta and I wanted to start having the four girls we were hoping for and, in 1976, Tanya, our first of four daughters was born. Alyssa followed in 1978, Natasha in 1982 and our baby, Lara, in 1984. Vlasta always aspired to be a wife and mother and she excelled at both, being a truly loving spouse, mother and the ultimate caregiver. We feel truly blessed to have shared another life on Earth with you and will try to live our lives as well as you did and learn from the many thoughts that you have inspired in us. We will miss you always. Love from your family, Tommy (Husband), Tanya (Eric), Alyssa (Darren), Natasha and Lara (Daughters and Son-in-Laws), Ethan, Jaimie, Sara, Darren Jr. and Audrey (Grandchildren), Francisca (Sister) and many other family members in Canada and Slovenia. Cusie, thanks for everything, I love you more than life itself. See you when I get there, and for eternity. Love, Tommy Angels are meant to fly A service will be held Saturday December, 10, 2011 at 11am at Sacred Heart Parish, 3900 Arthur Drive, Ladner, BC. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to BC Cancer Agency are appreciated.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The accent continues on understanding, compassion, gentle love, far travel, higher education, legal and cultural affairs. These are still subject to confusion, indecision and delay until Tuesday. After this (even Tuesday night) plunge wholeheartedly into these zones, get things done – there isn’t much time left. Be restful, tend to domestic concerns Sunday/Monday. Realize a status situation is “evolving.” Romance (or a creative urge) strikes midweek: it’s a good one (or at least harmony prevails). Tackle chores Friday/Saturday – intensity has entered this area, to July 2012. Taurus April 20-May 20: Sex, lifestyle change, deep health matters, behind-scenes power struggles, large finances, research and “hidden gems” – these are slated for 10 more days (and their “talk and details” will continue into early January). Until Tuesday, indecision and “no go” signals affect these zones, but by this night forward, green lights shine. The research you do now could support some fine reports, conclusions or presentations you’ll make late month through January. Sunday/Monday are friendly, active. Settle into home, soul midweek. Thursday night onward brings a romantic, creative surge. Gemini May 21-June 20: The accent lies on marriage, partnership proposals, negotiations, agreements and refusals, relocation, litigation and dealing with the public. Indecision or delay in these areas might continue to Tuesday: after this, you can begin making firm choices, marching ahead. An old flame or someone from “past times” might have come into your life recently. If so, this relationship might fade soon, or become a cornerstone of your life. Which it is, might be determined by a phone call you make Tuesday to Thursday, or by your romantic urges next week (December 18/19). Home, late week.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Tackle chores and health concerns. These might meet indecision or delay before Tuesday, but from this night onward the road straightens in many areas, and you can march ahead. You still won’t get a final green light in health or employment matters until after Christmas, but the little glitches disappear this week.Your energy and charisma surge upward Sunday to Tuesday. Chase money Tuesday p.m. to Thursday eve – luck accompanies early starters. Casual friends, siblings, news media, short trips, reports and paperwork fill Thursday night to Saturday – DON’T start/push a romance. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Romantic, creative, speculative and pleasure trends continue. These might have been frustrated, delayed – or brought an old flame – over the past few weeks. If you’ve become involved recently, you have to make a decision Tuesday onward: was it a fling, or for keeps? (Or, you might just stumble upon love’s attractions this week – rather, he/she likely stumbles upon you.) Rest, retreat Sunday/Monday: don’t oppose anyone at work. Your energy, charm and magnetism soar midweek. Past delays end Tuesday/Wednesday, so charge ahead on any front. Chase money Friday/ Saturday – it flows! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: This is your last week of recuperation for a while, so rest up, get sluggish, pamper and nurture yourself. Domestic matters loom importantly – indecision and delay in these yield to progress on a small scale this week, but ultimate breakthroughs, luck and expansion have to wait until afterChristmasDay.HappinessarrivesSunday/Monday, in the form of friends, optimism or wishes coming true. Retreat, lie low and get that rest midweek. Your energy and charisma shine Thursday night to Saturday. Your sexual magnetism (and courage) are high, now to July – you’ll be approached!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Recent delays end Tuesday – and this same period (Tuesday eve to Thursday) brings hope, joie de vivre, popularity, wish fulfillment and entertainment – accept invitations. A Gemini might figure prominently. Earlier, Sunday/Monday are for ambition, showing higher-ups that you’re still on the job. Don’t toy with others or take things lightly these two days. Retreat, rest Thursday – contemplate, plan, contact head office or government agencies, be charitable, reconnect with your spirit. A partner (or a prospective one) can hold you back now to July. You can see why Friday night. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Minor delays end in money, earnings and spending, although major hold-backs last until late December. Even so, charge ahead now, especially with minor or detailed monetary projects – make decisions, contacts. Sunday/Monday bring wisdom, love. Make no commitments. Be ambitious midweek – bosses are watching, and luck rides with you! Thursday night through Saturday brings social delights, popularity, wish fulfillment and optimism. You might attend a gathering with co-workers Friday night, or get a great work idea while socializing. Love could appear early evening, Friday/Saturday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Your indecision fades after Tuesday, so charge ahead then to late month – time’s short, and you have much to do. Thankfully, your energy is high – so are your clout, charm and effectiveness. Mystery, the secret depths of life surface Sunday/Monday. You might want to join sexually, invest, take out a big loan, these two days – don’t. Wait. Midweek brings understanding, gentle love, far travel, intellectual projects, legal, cultural or educational involvements. Charge forward in these. Your reputation, status and career are lucky Friday/Saturday: but VIPs are impatient.

Dec. 11 - 17, 2011 Capricorn Dec.22-Jan.19: Lie low, rest, contemplate and plan. Deal with government agencies, charities, institutions and “head office.” Reconnect with your soul. Small delays end in these zones Tuesday, but the big, important release, healing, or spiritual quest won’t really occur until January onward. Take care of the details now to then. (E.g., you won’t get a tax ruling or a blessing from the guru until next year, but you can hand in the forms, make the contacts, now.) Midweek is mysterious, potent, and frees you “through commitment.” Love, understanding Friday/Saturday – don’t step into legal fires. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Wishes come true, your popularity remains high, and optimism prevails. By Tuesday, recent delays and indecisions end. But your biggest wish still faces delay until late December onward – maintain hope, faith in it, and you could walk away with the prize in 2012. Work and drudgery face you Sunday/Monday – be calm, thoughtful, and don’t compete with or trash another worker. Exciting meetings arise Tuesday p.m. to Thursday eve – be diplomatic, patient, but eager to join. A partnership might be brewing. Friday/Saturday bring secrets, power plays, big finances, and sexual urges. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Remain ambitious. Recent delays, especially in career and status zones, end Tuesday night. So you can (and should) charge ahead with ambitious plans, projects. Realize the biggest forward advance in these will occur after Dec. 24 (into mid-2012) not before. Still, dive into the details and communications side of your ambitions midweek onward. Sunday/Monday bring romantic notions, but subtle push-back, too. Midweek’s for chores, employment, career – and health matters. You might meet your equal Thursday night to Saturday. Exciting meetings, challenges, and sensual sparks! timstephens@shaw.ca
