MP says he never met lobbyist PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

MP John Duncan says he never met the prime minister’s former advisor who’s now under investigation by the RCMP. “I can tell you that I have never met with, been spoken to, or been lobbied by Bruce Carson on these matters,” Duncan said in a statement issued by his office. “My ministerial staff met with Bruce Carson on one occasion (Jan. 11/11). My staff provided publicly available information to Bruce Carson and recommended he work directly with First Nations. This meeting did not result in any business being given to this individual.” Duncan is the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, and the Conservative member representing Northern Vancouver Island. Carson is a former senior advisor to Prime Minister Stephen Harper who’s been working on behalf of H2O Global Group. The company is attempting to land government contracts to sell water systems to First Nations reserves. His lobbying efforts are now Continued on Page 2

A fun day of fishing was spoiled by the sight of garbage dumped around Echo Lake. Cecil Henley and a buddy had just arrived at the Highway 28

pull-off beside the picturesque lake when they were confronted by heaps of trash and an abandoned camper. “We were up there last Thursday and I thought, we have to do something about this!” said the avid angler.

The trash filled five pickup trucks and totaled 910 kilograms. The garbage was then hauled to the Campbell River landfill. “A prior call to the regional district resulted in their waiving of the dump fees for the material,”

said a pleased Henley. “Thanks to all of the regional district staff for their assistance and the positive attitude that we were greeted with.” While the g roup would have rather been cleaning fresh trout, Henley said they were all pleased to tidy up the illegally dumped trash. “We actually had a good time, even though we were cleaning up someone else’s mess,” he said.

Businesses suffer but still optimistic KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

More than half of businesses that responded to a community workforce survey say they have suffered as a result of the local economy. About 63 per cent said the weak economy has had a negative impact on their operations. But, according to the survey, completed by 231 employers, most are optimistic about the future. About 43 per cent believe the economy will be moderately better within the next year and 54 per cent think the demand for their products and services will increase moderately. About 47 per cent said they believe their revenues will increase moderately in the next year while 16 per cent think revenues will decrease. “There was a somewhat surprising level of business confidence and the level of resilience,” Kerry Jothen, CEO of Human Capital Strategies which helped gather survey results, told business leaders at a chamber luncheon last Thursday. “But that’s good. There’s a strong belief that the community of Campbell River is wellpositioned.”

Doug Prestion, executive director of North Island Employment Foundation Society and Colleen Evans, executive director of the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce, reported on a landmark labour market survey released last week.

The survey was an initiative of the Campbell River and District Chamber of Commerce and North Island Employment (NIEFS) to better describe the community’s employer base and identify which occupations are in demand, transition or decline and to determine the skills and training required for these occupations. The survey, which was a seven-and-a-half month process, was the largest single, community-based workforce strategy survey ever taken on Vancouver Island, with 54 questions. “The key findings

from this initiative will assist our local employers with their human resource planning, job seekers with their employment, skills development and career decision making and assist with the retention of our existing businesses and industries, as well as support the attraction of emerging industry sectors and businesses,” said Colleen Evans, executive director of the Campbell River Chamber. The survey revealed that North Island College, which provided research for the survey, projected there would be 3,538 job openings in the Campbell River area between 2009 and 2014 and 70-90 per cent of those will come from existing businesses. Sixty per cent of those will be attributed to retirement and workers moving out of town. Currently, there are

90 job vacancies, with 31 of those in occupations unique to primary industry; 14 in the sales and service sector; and 12 in management occupations. Of those employers who have struggled to fill positions, 27 per cent acknowledged that vacancies have required staff or the business owner to work more hours; 22 per cent said empty positions have caused reduced customer service; while nearly 16 per cent identified limited production levels as a consequence to being understaffed. T he majority of employers said it is difficult to recruit workers because they cannot attract qualified people. Many said they cannot afford to pay those with the right skill set and they face competition from other employers, some from out of town.

Between 70 and 90 per cent of Campbell River youth plan on leaving the community for education, training or careers, according to reports from organizations such as Statistics Canada and BC Stats, that were reviewed in creating the survey. Despite the potential loss of the majority of Campbell River youth, more than half of respondents (56 per cent) are not concer ned about meeting their recruitment needs in the next two years while 13 per cent are not confident they will be able to recruit qualified workers. According to the survey respondents, there are 4,533 full-time employees in Campbell River; 1,232 parttime workers and 951 contract employees. Organizations average about 16 workers each.

District 72’s secretarytreasurer. A school district is not legally allowed to run a deficit unless it has enough funds in its contingency reserve to cover the shortfall. School District 72 is low on savings and does not have that option. “We’re not planning to use up our reserves,” said Neale. “Because we have been dipping into our contingency reserves so much in the past couple of years, it’s too low to consider.” Instead, the district will have to look at making other changes to balance the budget. “We’re looking at operational changes to reduce costs and become more ef ficient,” said Neale. “We’re also meeting with parent groups to determine their priorities and seek some solutions.” T he district has received an extra $1 million from the province – the same as last year – to help manage declining enrolments. The school district qualified for one-time funding protection ($508,000) and enrolment decline dollars ($492,000) which allows the district time to adjust to declining numbers. Enrolment at Campbell River area schools is projected to decrease by 180 students next year, with Timberline Secondary School losing 100 of those students. Typically, the school district would receive less funding from the government because school districts are funded on a per student basis. This year the province has upped funding by $44 per student which translates to $6,784 for each student in the Campbell River area. Neale said the introduction of full-day kinderg ar ten next year helps the district, because now all students will be funded as full-time which will help balance the loss of students. The school district will allow public input into the budget at its regular board of education meeting April 26 at 7:30 p.m. and again at a special meeting May 3 at 7 p.m. – both at the school board office.

Farnworth wants B.C. to get tough KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

B.C. is the third largest province and it’s time it started acting its size, says Mike Farnworth, New Democratic Party (NDP) leadership candidate. The Port Coquitlam MLA, who is one of five vying for the position of party leader, was in Campbell River last Thursday to meet with NDP members and supporters. One of the things about the current BC Liberal government that bothers Far nworth is how wishy washy B.C. is in its negotiations with the federal government. “B.C. has been too unpredictable,” says Farnworth. “One day we’re shaking hands with Ottawa and then we poke them in the eye the next day. It’s time we starting punching for our size to make sure we get our share, it’s very important in terms of the future in British Columbia.” Farnworth, who has been an MLA from 1991-2001 and then again since 2005, says it’s crucial for his party to win the next election so British Columbians can have a say in government decisions. “We have to take a much more consultative approach than what we’ve seen in the last 10 years and I’ll even go as far as to say as when we were in government,” says

If we engage in infighting, we’re dead. “But I think we’re going to come out of this more united and ready to win an election. Man swarmed, beaten on Dogwood St. Three people are facing charges after a man was swarmed and assaulted on Dogwood Street. RCMP say a man in his 20s was walking in the 200 block, around 7 p.m. on Friday, when he was approached by four young people. Someone asked him where his cigarettes were and then he was swarmed. The culprits pulled his jacket over his head and began throwing punches. The man suffered a facial injury but managed to escape and called 911. Several officers responded to the call and tracked down the suspects. A 21-year-old man, a 19-year-old female and a 17-year-old male were arrested. All three are known to police and the swarming appears to be a random incident. The suspects’ names were not released pending the approval of charges by Crown counsel.

Young man robs Quinsam The Quinsam Hotel’s beer and wine store was robbed on March 16. Police say a young First Nations male entered the store around 10:55 p.m., grabbed two bottles of liquor and tried to assault an

employee before fleeing. A search by RCMP and a police dog failed to find the robber. On March 15, at 9:35 a.m., there was a break in at Moxie’s Restaurant, located in Discovery Harbour Mall. However, it appears nothing was stolen. The next day a man was arrested on an unrelated matter and is a suspect in the Moxie’s break-in.

Man bear sprayed Two young men are facing charges after bear spraying another man on Saturday around 3:30 a.m. The teens, ages 18 and 19, showed up at the residence of a 38-year-old man and were apparently looking for another man. When the resident told them the man didn’t live there, he was bear sprayed. The assault occurred in the 2000 block of 16th Avenue. Police arrived shortly later and were able to track down the

suspects.

Woman arrested for drug dealing A 26-year-old woman is facing charges connected with a dial-a-dope operation. On March 17, Mounties called a cell number and made an order for cocaine. A little later, they arrested the woman who was found with approximately $200 worth of cocaine. Police are recommending she be charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

A call for assistance from Quadra Island RCMP led police in Campbell River to a stolen vehicle on Trask Road last Thursday night. Inside the vehicle were four youths. The driver was arrested and held in custody.

A witness helped Mounties track down a driver who fled an accident scene early Sunday morning. At 1:42 a.m., RCMP received a report of a driver colliding with a utility trailer parked near the corner of Upland and Wimbleton roads in Oyster River. The driver fled the scene but was spotted by a witnessed who provided police with enough information to track down the driver to a nearby residence on King Road.

Dispute leads to arrest A man involved in a domestic dispute is also facing impaired driving charges. Police investigated the dispute on March 16, at 2:12 a.m. The man allegedly assaulted his spouse and then drove away. He was found about 50 minutes later in his vehicle and arrested for drinking and driving. His vehicle was also impounded for 30 days.

B.C. Embarks into the Clark era It didn’t take new Premier Christy Clark long to make her mark in Victoria. In her first week on the job she reduced the size of cabinet, took strides toward party We say: Premier unity by giving top jobs to her closest leadership rivals (while also turfing not shy about Gordon Campbell’s right-hand man putting her stamp Colin Hansen), and raised B.C.’s minimum wage. on government She also eliminated the training wage of $6 an hour. It is time for the minimum wage to reflect inflation and the cost of living in this province, which, at $8 an hour, has the lowest minimum wage in Canada.

Not everyone in B.C. is pleased with the hike – to $8.75 an hour in May, then to $9.50 in November, and $10.25 by May 2012, when the minimum rate for servers in licensed establishments will top out at $9. Opponents claim the pay increases will cripple restaurants and small businesses. The “massive” increases are going to hurt the very people they intend to help, as restaurants will have to cut hours to control costs. Oddly, restaurants remain open and staffed in other parts of the country where the minimum wage is equal to what will now be implemented in B.C. The Liberals consulted stakeholders and economic experts and determined that job impacts are

minimized when minimum wage increases are done incrementally over time. The B.C. Federation of Labour, which has for most of the past decade lobbied for an increase in the minimum wage, also doubts that jobs are in jeopardy. No doubt Clark’s decision is aimed at making new friends, given the possibility of a provincial election before the legislated fixed election date in May 2013. It wouldn’t be a surprise if she calls one while her popularity is peaking, and the NDP is just about to pick a new leader. Surely she has a few more surprises in store. She did promise change. – Black Press

Good point: Trolley Trolley proposal will cost taxpayers money First lets define “trolley” – a vehicle transporting people powered by motors fed by electricity from above ground trolley poles. So, are you proposing we re-install power poles and wires that we just paid to removed? Then we have the projected ridership of 5,000 per month at 25 cents donation. That’s $1,250 per month, or $15,000 per year, assuming that all donate 25 cents, and 5,000 people use the service – which I would doubt – less operation cost of $70 per hour, times 40 hours a week or 480 hours per year at $70 equals $33,600 plus insurance at $5,000 per year. That leaves a deficit of $23,600 per year, not counting general operating cost and maintenance. I was under the impression that Rivercorp’s mandate was to bring economic development to our city, not encourage a proposal that will cost taxpayer money but, then again, this council and mayor don’t think about money. After all, isn’t that what we the taxpayers are for? Time to wake-up. Elections are a coming. As an aside, what has happened with the 3-1/2 acres of waterfront issue that all of council ran on in the last election? Michel Rabu Campbell River

The wussification of sports needs the bubble

I saw something really goofy a few weeks back on the CBC-TV’s Dragons’ Den. The investors (i.e. the Dragons) were being pitched on a huge, inflatable toy that allows a person to literally walk on water. Jesus complex aside, the user climbs inside the clear plastic ball and walks and tumbles across the water. I was curious to see how long it would take the demonstrator to pass out from lack of oxygen. That didn’t happen and neither did the deal go through with the Dragons. But the human bubble does have a future. I see this clearly now. The hysterical, politically-correct screeching about sports-related head

shots and injuries is just about reaching its peak. Matt Cooke – the skinniest goon ever in the NHL – was recently suspended for the remainder of the regular season and the first round of playoffs for another stupid head shot. The NFL, meanwhile, is toying with moving kickoffs forward to the 35 yard line. That would mean virtually every kickoff will become a touchback and would thereby eliminate the jobs of thrilling kickoff return men. I guess if the new rule is approved, a fat guy like me could get a job as “kick returner.” Hey, I can still catch the ball!

The NFL’s reasoning for the proposed rule change is player safety. Too many are injured when giant, fleet-footed men race downfield and collide with each other. Go figure. So, in the spirit of the wussification of North American contact sports, I suggest that every athlete needs their own plastic ball shield. Think of the spectacle of football players colliding at full speed and bouncing up to the nosebleed level seats! I’m still working on the feasibility study of how to prevent skates from puncturing the protective air pocket. But, in the spirit of the never-saynever salesman, I say it’s doable. It also has applications for non-con-

tact sports. Those cute pixie gymnasts will never again suffer the agonies of broken limbs and crushed spirits when they fall off the uneven bars. And think of the health dollars we could save by ending the weekly parade of wounded skateboarders to the emergency room. We could even surround our vehicles in plastic bubbles and rename our highways: Bounce-a-rama Route 101 and so on. The possibilities are endless. No more hitting, no more injuries and absolutely no human contact. I’m certain the bubble can even help prevent the spread of disease. Bubble boy nation, here we come!

OPINION Abolish golden handshakes Filed for publication with the Mirror: Mayor Cornfield & Councillors: In recent years there have been several examples of employees who have been terminated with a golden handshake. We note in local papers that a new city manager has recently been appointed. Since we assume there are no currently unsigned personnel contracts, this is an opportune time to abolish clauses that provide bonuses at termination of employment whether by resignation, retirement or being fired. Inducements of any sort, other than a competitive salary, should not be required to

attract good employees to our fair city. Remember Campbell River is a good place to live, work and retire. Council needs to walk this talk. There is an element of unfairness when selected employees receive these special motivations. There is no evidence whatsoever that a golden handshake has or will produce measurable benefits to the citizens who pay for them. The vast majority of Campbell Riverites recognize that it is a privilege to serve their community, their province and their country in whatever way they can. Observe the motivation of the many people who volunteer in one role or another. This council has the opportunity to set

Cut the planning and building staff in half. There is going to be no building anyway. As for turning the mill site into a garbage burner...that is surely the way to finish Campbell River. JOHN LOUIS RONSON March 10, 1948 - March 12, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John. He is survived by his wife Peggy Chambers, his brother Barry (Bev) of Bracebridge, Ontario and his dog Chelsea. He is predeceased by his parents Wilf and Bonnie and his brother Tom. John was born in Chatham and grew up in Ridgetown, Ontario. He moved to B.C. in 1973 and worked as a carpenter, but he was proudest of his years spent with the North Vancouver Outdoor School and the YMCA Camp Thunderbird in Sooke. John was a quiet man that loved the simple pleasures of life like mornings, the change of seasons and the natural beauty that surrounded him at his home at Miracle Beach. He was creative and enjoyed painting, playing guitar and backyard birding, but Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passion from an early age was the game of golf. He had a sweet swing and 2 hole in ones to his credit. He will be missed. Flowers gratefully declined. Grieg Seafood BC Ltd has a new office at 1180 Ironwood Street in Campbell River. To celebrate the move, the company recently hosted an open-house and ribbon cutting ceremony. The event was well supported by a range of new neighbors, contractors, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and company staff. “This new office facility demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the community of Campbell River and the upper Vancouver Island,” said Stewart Hawthorn, Managing Director. “ It is important that we continue to work responsibly and openly in the areas that we operate as this will support our industry and lead to improved performance.” Mayor Cornfield presided over the ceremony by officially cutting the ribbon. Salmon farming is important to the economy of Vancouver Island bringing jobs and investment that supports the wider community. In 2010, Grieg Seafood invested over $7 million in new capital projects with local firms and there are plans to invest up to $12 million in the 2011 year. “It is a little known fact that Grieg Seafood has never transferred funds out of this region – we have always invested more as the business has grown,” said Hawthorn. Grieg Seafood BC Ltd. farms salmon on the Sunshine Coast, on the east of upper Vancouver Island and in the Nootka and Esperanza Inlets. All of Grieg’s farmed salmon are processed in the locally owned and operated Walcan plant on Quadra Island and in the company’s own facility on the Sunshine Coast. Grieg directly employs over 140 people and markets it salmon in Canada and the USA.

Choral concert compels you to join in You’ll be asking yourself, “How Can I Keep from Singing?” during a varied musical evening at the the Campbell River United Church Tuesday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. The church will present the Josephburg Choral Society and two other musical acts – the Belles in Harmony handbell choir and Measure for Measure. Tickets are $15 for adults or $5 for children under 12 and are available at The Music Plant, Cornerstone Gift Book & Music, the Church Office, or

at the door. Proceeds from the concert will support the programs of the Campbell River United Church. The Josephburg Choral Society is a community choir from the Greater Edmonton area, made of up three groups. The group that founded the society was the Josephburg Men’s Chorus, established in 1979 in the hamlet of Josephburg near Edmonton to sing in local churches, seniors’ residences and other community venues. Over the years, the non-profit group has grown to

its current size of 20 men. The chorus now travels extensively performing its wide range of music from classical and gospel religious music to Broadway and Hollywood show tunes and old favourites. Joining the Josephburg Choral Society will be the Belles in Harmony handbell choir was founded in 1985 around a nucleus of wives, mothers, daughters and sisters of members of the Men’s Chorus. Membership is now open to any interested women. Their repertoire

ranges from sacred music to more contemporary selections such as A Medley of Warner Brother’s Cartoon Themes. Meanwhile, Measure for Measure ranges in size from a trio to a quintet and adds new flair to the Choral Society’s concerts with its selection of music from Irish folk songs to Broadway musical numbers. Greg Jeffery directs the Josephburg Men’s Chorus while Brent Orchard directs Belles in Harmony and Measure for Measure. The accompanist is Jennetta Bartz.

The United Church of Canada is at the corner of Pinecrest and South Birch, just down the hill from Strathcona Gardens. Regular Sunday morning worship and Sunday School is at 10 a.m. and their minister is Wayne Hughes. In addition to offering Sunday worship, mid-week groups and Healing Touch ministry, they seek to be “the compassion of Jesus coming alive” in Campbell River through their soup kitchen outreach at lunch time on Saturdays at 1251 Cypress St.

Jiles, an educator from Washington State, has been teaching news reporting and animation production skills to youth since 1983. “Observing these young people being entertained as they develop critical thinking skills, using today’s t e ch n o l o g y a n d a medium they engage with is exciting,” says Jiles. “I chuckle to myself as I watch them develop a story concept into a full-fledged finished animation.” In his Level One Wo r k s h o p, y o u t h start by scripting out a story idea. Next, students create twodimensional drawings

to tell their story, add an audio track, special effects and their first animation is finished. These test animations usually run from 30 seconds to two minutes depending on storyline and plot. The Level Two Workshop allows young animators to advance to a three-dimensional medium. The cost is $40 per student per level.Only 12 young people will be allowed to enroll per workshop. Gallant can honestly say his songwriting was out of this world

ecognized by his peers as one of Canada’s best performing songwriters, Lennie Gallant is a native of Prince Edward Island. This prolific songwriter has recorded nine albums (seven in English and two in French), which have won him a host of awards and nominations from both the JUNOs and East Coast Music Awards. His album, “When We Get There” was nominated for a JUNO Award and went into space aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour in July 2009. Canadian astronaut Julie Payette chose the album for the astronaut crew to enjoy. With the release of “If We Had A Fire” in 2009 he claims it is his best work yet. Recorded in Halifax, the album holds 14 new Gallant songs, performed by the artist and some of the best musicians the East Coast has to offer. “If We Had A Fire” Won the 2010 “Roots Recording of the Year” at the East Coast Music Awards. While he says he is much appreciative of this kind of recognition for his work, Gal-

lant feels the best part of being a songwriter is the moment of creation. “When you really feel locked in with the ability to tell a story or convey an emotion in a unique yet, hopefully, a universal way.” Other artists obviously believe in Gallant’s writing abilities as over 30 artists have recorded his songs internationally, including Jimmy Buffett. “I have always wanted to bring Lennie Gallant’s music to the forefront,” says Buffett. His songs have also appeared in feature films, some of which include Canvas, which starred Academy Award-winner Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River) and Joe Pantoliano from The Sopranos (“Mademoiselle Voulez Vous Danser”, recorded by Jimmy Buffett), Conquest, which stared Lothaire Bluteau (theme song), Sigh and a Wish: Helen Creighton’s Maritimes (feature), and The Bellinger (wrote sound track). His songs have been used in television series - Dawson’s Creek (“Northern

Lights”), Joan of Arcadia (“Something Unspoken”) and in numerous theatrical productions. In addition to writing all the songs on his nine albums, he co-wrote the theme song for the first World Conference / Congres Mondial Acadien (“Acadie de nos couer”), and for Pier 21, Canada’s immigration gateway. He was also asked to write a song for Halifax’s 250th anniversary (“History is Happening Now”), which was then performed with a choir of 2000 voices on one of the two bridges spanning the harbour. As a performer, Gallant’s intense delivery reaches down to the very soul of his audience, moving effortlessly through stirring narratives, comic observations, and hard driving rhythms. He has toured extensively internationally, playing festivals and concerts accompanied by roots rock bands, and in acoustic settings. He has shared the stage with such accomplished songwriters as Lucinda Williams, Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Patti Griffin, and

“Father of judo” receives top honours A local judo legend is now a “master.” Jim Ramsay, the founder of the Campbell River Judo Club, was presented with a Judo Canada Grading certificate and a red/ white belt March 17. The belt signifies his new judo rank as Rokudan, or sixth degree black belt. The significance of Rokudan is that the rank makes him a “master” judo instructor.

Ramsay has been the driving force behind the Judo Club since July 1967, when he and his family moved from Victoria to Campbell River. Over the years Ramsay’s reputation as an excellent judoka (judo player) and instructor has rubbed off on several generations of children and adults in Campbell River. Since the inception of the Judo Club in 1967 there have been

30 promotions of club members to black belt rank or promotions of existing black belts. He is respected throughout the judo clubs across B.C. Ramsay began his judo career in 1955 as a member of the Glasgow Scotland Police judo team. He and his wife Jesse immigrated to Canada in 1956. The following year he became one of the first members of Sensei Y. Inouye’s

Victoria Judo Club. In Victoria he earned his Shodan (first degree black belt) and his Nidan (second degree). He assisted Sensei Inouye running the Victoria club until 1966 when Ramsay moved his family to Campbell River. In the years between 1967 to 1989, the judo club moved through various locations in Campbell River but it was always Ramsay’s wish to have a dojo

where the club was not dependent on another party. Through Rams ay ’s l e a d e r s h i p, fundraising and gaming grants allowed the club to construct a dojo on city donated land. “Because of Ramsay the Judo Club is one of the few judo clubs in B.C. that actually owns its own building,” said Darcy Yule, head instructor at the Judo Club. In 1981, Ramsay’s

expertise was again a c k n ow l e d g e d by promotion to Sandan (third degree). In 1991 having have received his Yondan (fourth degree), Ramsay stepped back from instruction and the administration of the Judo Club. This coincided with his retirement from the Elk Falls pulp and paper mill. He and Jesse then started to enjoy travelling; many times back to Scotland and

Palm Springs. But he was never really away as he continued to be on the club executive looking after gaming grants. In 2001 Jim was awarded his Godan (fifth degree). Since then he has been pursuing the goal of doubling the mat area of the dojo and expanding the building. Ramsay is the “Shu” master of the Campbell River Judo Club.

Killer Whales spring forward The Campbell River Killer Whales made a huge splash in Duncan recently, winning 36 medals and taking third place at the Spring Invitational, March 13. “I believe our swimmers came to Duncan with a lot of confidence as they now have been back in the pool regularly, pushing each other to swim faster,”

said Chris Koopmans, head coach. Killer Whale swimmer had over 75 top eight finishes at the meet. In the 10 & under Boys Division, Cole Reid won a bronze medal in the 50-metre backstroke.Bradley Cooke (8 years) pushed himself to win one gold and one silver at his first

swim meet ever. Gage Windle (7) the youngest Killer Whale, came third in the 200-metre f r e e s t y l e, a c h i ev i n g a silver in the 100 backstroke. Travis Lathangue and Cameron King and Liam May also raced their way to top eight places. In the 13 & 14 Boys division Austin Johnson won the 200 back-

stroke and 100 IM, along with a bronze medal and new best time in the 50-metre fr eestlye. Conner Milligan challenged himself in a new event, the 200metre backstroke in which he came third. Mackenzie Paddington and Jenna Beaudin went one, two in the 200-metre freestlye. The two girls combined

for four gold medals and four silver medals. Kennedy Windle also competed in the 11 & 12 division, winning four silver medals. Natalie Fair was third in the 100 breaststroke. Sydney Boyle, Cianna Dunn and Aleah Jordan combined to win two gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

Elly and Brian Dick, Nola and Allen Bordeleau took a copy of the Mirror with them all the way to the top of the Haleakala Crater on the sunny island of Maui. Elevation 10,000 ft., temperature 56 degrees F, temperature at sea level, 82 degrees, but what a view.

We keep getting mixed messages about what to do with our milk cartons and jugs. - What is the best option for recycling them?

You can rinse out your milk cartons and jugs and recycle them at the Encorp Return-It depot. You won't receive deposit money for them but by doing this you will save an incredible amount of space in your garbage can and help keep these cartons out of the landfill. Plastic milk jugs are also accepted in curbside recycling collection programs. Check out www.encorp.ca for more details.
