Doctors in Sri Lanka have removed the world’s heaviest and largest kidney stone from a 62-year-old man. The stone measured 13.37 cm in length and 10.55 cm in width—larger than the kidney of the patient. It weighed 800g, which is equivalent to the weight of five baseballs.
Canistus Coonghe’s kidney stone was removed from his right kidney by Dr Kugadas Sutharshan on June 1. The doctor used a surgical procedure called pyelolithotomy.
Interestingly, despite the massive kidney stone, Coonghe’s kidney, gallbladder and other vital organs were functioning normally. Coonghe, a retired soldier, is now recovering well, as per the Guinness World Records.

On Thursday, the Guinness World Records shared pictures of Coonghe’s kidney stone on Twitter. A Twitter user commented on it, “this looks like kidney rock to me”. Another user said, “Am glad the patient is recovering well, cause I can’t even imagine the pains that patient went through. Kudos to the medical team, they did a great job.”
The record for having the largest kidney stone was previously held by Vilas Ghuge from India. Ghuge’s kidney stone was 13 cm long and it was removed in 2004. And Wazir Muhammad from Pakistan held the previous record for the heaviest kidney stone. It weighed 620g.
