Numb3rs - Review

A good opportunity to catch up on an interesting series.

Numb3rs: Season 3 DVD Review
In theory, Numb3rs not only shouldn't be a hit show, it probably shouldn't be past its first season. It simply doesn't follow the typical procedural crime show formula. Numb3rs follows FBI agent Don Eppes (Rob Morrow) who brings his brother, genius mathematician Charlie (David Krumholtz) in to help solve crimes - by using math. Their father, Alan Eppes, is played with great charm by Judd Hirsch. These men are flawed, care about each other, and care about their jobs; a rare occurrence on network television. Their relationships and characters have grown since the beginning, and they are realistically portrayed.

Numb3rs is an interesting show with a good blend of character storylines and catching criminals and they show the math in a super user-friendly way. It also makes great use of its guest stars; several characters who work with the FBI will reappear in later episodes, Lou Diamond Phillips is outstanding whenever he pops in as sharpshooter Agent Edgerton.

On a show that somehow manages to use math in real life (which most high schoolers wouldn't believe possible), season three was compelling and includes a storyline that brought the bad guys close to home, when one of their team is discovered to be leading a second life. For those of us who watched this season as it aired, that revelation stuck throughout the summer and made this year's premiere one of the most anticipated. If you missed it - now is the time to catch up.

Numb3rs airs in widescreen, and looks great on DVD. The audio is clear and consistent.

The extras have some surprisingly fun highlights. The set tour of the house Charlie and Alan live in is humorous, as the actors give the tour and joke and tease each other, similar to what their characters would do. The mini-documentary, "Eppes Central" wasn't as entertaining, but informative on the house they live in - from season one to now. Commentaries are available on a few episodes, with a variety of people participating; basically, it really feels like everyone is having a blast making the show.

The Verdict

NUMB3RS is a drama about an FBI agent who recruits his mathematical-genius brother to help the Bureau solve a wide range of challenging crimes in Los Angeles. The two brothers take on the most confounding criminal cases from a very distinctive perspective. Inspired by actual cases, the series depicts how the confluence of police work and mathematics provides unexpected revelations and answers to the most perplexing criminal questions. A dedicated FBI agent, Don Eppes (Rob Morrow), couldn't be more different from his younger brother, Charlie Eppes (David Krumholtz), a brilliant mathematician who, since he was little, yearned to impress his big brother. As a seasoned investigator, Don deals in hard facts and evidence, whereas Charlie, a math professor at a California university, functions in a world of mathematical probability and equations. Now, despite their disparate approaches to life, Don and Charlie are able to combine their areas of expertise and solve some killer cases.
