Painted the car in the driveway. Now what am I supposed to do to get rid of this orange peel? Its my daily driver that I'm fixing after hitting a deer so its not a show car but I'd like to get it as best as possible. Its a base coat clear coat using shermin williams paint. Here's some pics:

oh my sweet jesus, ive never seen that much orange peel in my life...did you use a spray gun or a paint roller? and sherman williams makes automotive paint???

wow, never seen that much orange peel either...and yeah sherwin williams does make automotive paint, and supposedly it's pretty good...i dont know if that can be wetsanded and buffed..is that a single stage (enamel) or base coat/ clear coat?

Sherwin Williams is one of the only brands I will prefer over PPG for automotive paints.

May Jesus shine a light on your soul after you're done with this car. It will take a lot of work. Possibly 2-4 hours per panel. I would work one at a time since there's so much to be done. How much experience do you have when it comes to wetsanding and buffing? Send me a PM. I can help.

well if its single stage and its not metallic you shouldnt have an issue with the cut compound and polish, i wouldnt touch it if it was metallic cus you run the risk of flipping it

I'd respray that, itd be a hell of a lot easier. And its a base clear like the OP stated in his post. Looks like someone didn't clean the surface properly, are there any "fish eyes" in the clear? good luck with whatever you decide to do!

It is a base coat clear coat sprayed with this gun:




Its a 93' Oldsmobile with 278,000 miles so its not a show car but more of a learning experience to how to better paint a car in the future. I obviously know it looks like **** but if I can get some pointers to how to correct I can learn something for next time I paint something.

What's the best road to take now to make it look like/correct it to get to a normal finish.


Remember. this car was sprayed in a driveway so perfection wasn't expected. Just looking for recomendations and I'll post the results for a before and after.

that kind of orange peal is not fixable no matter how much layer of clear you used . From the looks of it you used a primer spray pattern that was to strong for the paint choice and instead of hitting the car with a even spray your gun shot it it out way to fast and strong that is what caused that orange peal but in your case it's not it's a paint defect done by you .

only way to fix it is respray and adjust your spray

^I disagree. **** can be fixed.

One of my first cars looked like that and I was able to sand and buff it out nice and smooth.

For sand and buff you're going to want to be using 1000/1500/2000

Wetsand, compound and polish. Worst case you cut through the clear and you have to respray it, but since that's the only alternative you might as well try the wetsanding first. And the grits Eyger suggested are exactly what you want. If you put enough clear on there, you should be ok with fixing that though.

in my opinion i think ur better off wet sanding that and maybe trying another coat.. theres too much orange peel =/

After wet sanding I'd suggest Meguiar's M105 Cut and M205 polish with either a rotary or quality dual action polisher (Porter Cable 7424 and the like).

damn that's a lot of orange peal. Did you use the right mixture ratio? Did you had a little bit of reducer with the clear? What was your air pressure set at when painting? Since you don't have a gauge on the gun, are you able to set it on the air compressor? That bad of orange peal, I'd probably start off with a rougher grit sand paper like around 800 or so to wet sand with, then work your way up.

1000/1500 and 2000 grit just take your time. watch some youtube vids to give you some idea's

hey didnt u get any technical help from where u bought ur paint. Usually when a beginner comes into our store (English color) we give them tech sheets step by steps but its only for ppg paint maybe u shoulda sticked with that. remeber sherwin williams is good at house paint.
