Women's Volleyball Hosts Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (10-5, 3-1 Big West) returns home after splitting its matches on the road last week. The Rainbow Wahine fell at Long Beach State but bounced back with a sweep over UC San Diego the following day. Hawai'i continues conference action hosting Cal State Fullerton (1-12, 0-4 BW) on Friday and UC Irvine (3-12, 1-3 BW) on Saturday. Saturday is Dig Pink night to recognize breast cancer awareness.

Last meeting: On the road, Hawai'i swept the Titans (9/30/22), 25-20, 25-15, 25-13. Amber Igiede led UH with match-highs of 13 kills and four blocks. In their match vs. Cal State Fullerton in Honolulu (11/5/22), UH's middles were dominant, as Igiede and Tiffany Westerberg combined fo 23 kills, a .538 hitting percentage and seven blocks.

Last meeting: Last season, UH swept both matches vs. UC Irvine. In their meeting in Honolulu, the middles powered the 'Bows to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-13 win. Igiede,  Westerberg and Kennedi Evans combined for 30 kills on 41 errorless swings as Hawai'i hit a team season-high .471 (56-8-102). On the road, after a close first set, UH pulled away to sweep the Anteaters (11/12/22),  25-23, 25-13, 25-20. Igiede and Riley Wagoner combined for 27 of UH's 42 kills to lead UH's offensive attack

LAST TIME OUT...At Long Beach State
• Long Beach State snapped their 11-match losing streak to Hawai'i last Friday. The Beach swept UH, 22-25, 24-26, 21-25). The win was LBSU's first sweep over UH since 1996. The 'Bows had their opportunities, but costly errors handcuffed their efforts.
• UH had the lead at the 17-point mark in all three set. In all three sets, The Beach would rally back holding off UH en route to the sweep. In all, UH committed 29 unforced errors with 19 in hitting and 10 in serving (UH had just one ace by Igiede in the match).
• One bright spot in the loss was the Mānoa Roofing Company's appearance at the Pyramid. UH out-blocked the Beach, 12.0-to-8.0. Six players were in  at least two blocks each, led by Kennedi Evans' seven total blocks..
• In the loss, middle blocker Amber Igiede was the lone Rainbow Wahine to post double-digit kills. She had 13 kills three blocks and five digs. Fellow middle Kennedi Evans was in on a career-high eight total blocks (one solo) while adding four kills and Paula Guersching saw her longest outing of the season putting down six kills while hitting .500 with no errors on 12 attacks.
 
At UC SAN DIEGO
• After the tough loss on Friday, Hawai'i rebounded with a sweep at  UC San Diego, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17. The Tritons, who entered last week leading the Big West averaging 2.66 blocks per set was held to just 3.0 blocks in the match—two of which came in the first set.
• As a team, UH hit .388 for the match with a season-low eight hitting errors (48-8-103) to averaged 14.67 assists/set primarily by Kate Lang. Nine different rainbow Wahine recorded at least one kill. All five starting hitters had at least six kills each.
• A night after reaching a career-high in blocks, Evans was on fire on offense, putting down a career-high—at both UH and Utah—13 kills while hitting a match-high .522. She started by notching five kills in the first set and finished adding six more in the third.
• In Set 1, Igiede had three kills but also three errors. In the final two frames, she was errorless, going 7-for-10 to hit .700 in Sets 2 & 3. For the match, she hit .368.
• Junior outside hitter Paula Guersching made her first career start at Hawai'i . She filled her stat line tying her UH career-high with seven kills, five service aces, four digs and an assist. She went on long service runs at critical times throughout the match. In Set 1, UH and UCSD were tied at 17-17. A kill by Kendra Ham gave UH an 18-17 lead. Guersching then served six-straight points extending its lead to 24-17, eventually winning the set, 25-18. In the third set with UH trailing 14-15, an Evans kill tied the score at 15-15. Guersching then served the next four-straight points—including a pair of aces to retake the lead for good at 19-15.

THE GAME CHANGER
• Igiede's current rankings in NCAA and Big West:
      Hitting percentage: .408 (1-BW/31-NCAA)
      Kills/set: 3.76 (1-BW/64-NCAA)
      Points: 259.0 (1-BW/36-NCAA)
      Points/Set: 4.71 (1-BW/32-NCAA)
• Igiede also leads UH with 125 total blocks, 15 block solos, and 50 block assists. She is third on the team with 12 service aces. And the middle blocker, who has 61 digs this season, recently passed 300 career digs and currently has 317 total digs.
• This season, Igiede has put down double-digit kills in 13 of UH's 15 matches—including the last eight straight.
• She is the only Rainbow Wahine to record a kill, dig and block in every match this year
• Against Western Carolina at the Fight in the Fort tournament in Texas, Igiede put down a season-high 21 kills while hitting .625 in just three sets. In UH's match vs. CSUN, she was uber-efficient, hitting a season-high .722 (13-0-18).
• Igiede has recorded at least one kill in all 104 career matches - AND - has also been in on at least one block in 103 out of 104 career matches.
• This past summer, Igiede trained with the nation's elite collegiate players. She was invited to train with the U.S. Women's National Team led by head • Against Southern California on Sept. 2, Igiede became the 21st Rainbow Wahine to record 1,000 career kills. She was the first since McKenna Granato accomplished the feat in 2018. Currently, she is ranked No. 17 in UH history with 1,143 kills. She also is No. 6 in career blocks with 4466.
• Igiede is the only Rainbow Wahine to be named to all three preseason all-tournament teams.

LANG DEALING ASSISTS - Junior Kate Lang currently is ranked No. 15 in the NCAA and leads the conference averaging a career-high 10.75 assists/set. For her career, Lang is ranked No. 11 in the NCAA DI amongst active players, average of 10.42 over three seasons.
• Lang has six double-doubles this year and currently has a team-best 27 double-doubles for her career.
• With Lang at the controls of the UH offense, is the top ranked team in the Big West in assists/set (12.76) and kill/set (13.62). The Wahine have hit over the .300 mark as a team in five matches this season--the most recent at UCSD (.388).

GUERSCHING FINDING GROOVE  - Last week, junior transfer Paula Guersching came off the bench to put down six kills and hit at team-high .500 at Long Beach State. She then got her first career UH start at UCSD this past Saturday. She came through tying her UH career-high with seven kills. She dealt out five service aces with four digs and an assist.
•The German-native and transfer from Youngstown State has been coming on strong since the start of the Big West season. In conference play, she has played in just 9 of 12 sets blasting 23 kills averaging 2.56 kills/set with a .375 hitting percentage.

ALEXANDER RISING - Sophomore Caylen Alexander's hard work this past off-season is paying dividends now. She is tied for the team-lead with 13 aces and second on the team in kills (166), kill/set (3.19), digs (124), and third in total blocks (30).
• Alexander has been in on 30 total blocks this season—four more than she had all last year. She has recorded double-digit digs in six matches--including a career-high 16 in a three set win vs. Western Carolina.
• She has posted six double-doubles this season--including five-straight from  Sept. 8-16).
• Alexander has notched at least one kill, dig and block in all 14 matches played.
• Alexander made two preseason All-Tournament teams for the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic and the Fight in the Fort (Fort
Worth, Texas)

EDMONDS ANCHORING BACK ROW - Last year, Talia Edmonds played in every match as a defensive specialist while getting three starts at libero when then starter Tayli Ikenaga was injured at the end of warm ups right before UH's match vs. UC San Diego.
• This year, Edmonds won the starting libero job and has quarterbacked the back row well. She leads UH with 195 digs and 3.55 digs/set and she is second on the team with 39 assists.
