Canon eos 500 analog review

Last year i got into film photography. I started watching film camera reviews and stuff and decided to buy one. Well you guessed right, Canon eos 500 analog camera was my first film camera and was a gift from my girlfriend! So, i bought a pair of expensive cr123a batteries (which also last for one to two films only), i bought some film (and what film! i’m going to write for that an entirely solo post 🙂 ), and went out shooting!

Plastic body, plastic lens and then some plastic

Well it by no means feels expensive but i dont’t think it’s trying to.

Canon eos 500 is an auto focus film camera for anyone that wants to start shy with film photography with low budget, or anyone who have inherited it from his dad and anyone who is given it as a gift ! 🙂

It’s autofocus is slow and in the dark it hunts a lot and a lot of times does not even find focus finaly. It doesn’t get easier when you get to manually focus either. The finder is a little bigger than my nikon d5000 but it is not as bright and big as some other film cameras i have used, so manually focusing with the eos 500 isn’t easy either.

When i took it, the shutter didn’t work (my first film was just black), but after i played with it with my hands (gently of course) i made it work and it just stucks from time to time, but hey, not bad for 20 euros for an electronic metered and automatic film camera right? –After a small research i’ve found that this is a problem others have too. Some people find a sticky material in their shutter of their old canon eos 500 analog which makes the shutter impossible to operate.. Nonetheless as i described before it’s not a big problem.

The lens it came with, is a full frame (yes it fits the modern cameras also i belive!) 35-80mm. Again, plastic, stiff zoom ring.

All this plastic however however has a big advantage: canon eos 500 is very light! You can carry it for hours and forget it’s there which is a huge advantage for a camera to have.

Well the camera doesn’t sound very good till now but fear not: It is a beautiful budget analog camera to begin experimenting with film. To tell you the truth i find it liberating using a camera that i dont’t have to baby sit and generally dont’t think about it when i am out shooting. With film, the only thing differentiating the quality you get is the lens so you just can get a better lens for quality. But if you want quality you should stick with dslrs. Film is for the “look” you get and it is most for the feeling it gives you knowing you shoot in an analog format and fewer things are evolved between you and your subject.

Does anyone own the Canon eos 500 analog film camera? Was the review helpful? Please share your thoughts or any questions with me!

  1. Hi there..
I enjoyed your review very much , over the past couple of years I’ve collect a bunch of analogue cameras and the eos 500 happens to be one.
I haven’t had a chance to run a film through it yet. But it is a lovely big, reasonably lightweight 35mm Canon.
    Best regards Martin

  2. I loved this post, Thanks Angel. I shot with a film Camera all my youth, albeit an old clunky Canon AT-1, not a plush EOS 500… but patience was always important in such Photography. I was considering buying a second hand EOS 500 to have a go at going back to basics again… brilliant.
