City blames smell permeating Moncton’s north end on sewer project

Do you smell that, Moncton? The city says you’re not the only one.

A strong smell that has “permeated” the north end of the city is related to a sewer lining project near the westbound Wheeler Blvd. on-ramp, the City of Moncton said on Wednesday.

But don’t worry, the smell isn’t a risk to public health or safety.

The smell is due to a resin from the lining which is being installed in an existing sewer pipe.

The city says the process should only last a total of 24 hours as the resin cures in the sewer pipe.

“Crews are aware of the situation and are working on mitigating the issue by replacing manhole covers with grated catch basin covers to help alleviate the odour,” the city said in a press release.

If you do experience a strong smelll in your home, the city is urging home owners to check to see if their P-traps are dry and to clean out the caps to ensure they are properly sealed.

If that doesn’t fix the issue, the city is recommending that homeowners contact a licensed plumber and report the issue by calling the city’s dispatch line at 506-859-2643.
