Michigan football targeting MSU transfer, plus more Michigan Wolverines news
Michigan football has been active in the transfer portal recently and it seems like those efforts are ramping up now that the spring window is closed for departures.
You can still add players from the transfer portal whenever. Michigan football has been in touch with former 5-star safety Jacoby Mathews. The Wolverines have also been in contact with multiple defensive linemen, and multiple players in the secondary.
Defensive lineman Jay'viar Suggs is another target. He's got about 40 offers though, so that could be a tough pull. Michigan football added two wideouts this week though and the Michigan Wolverines have target another transfer -- former Michigan State safety Jaden Mangham.
This is according to a report from Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider. Mangham is expected to visit early next week, but will also visit Ohio State this weekend. Alabama is also in the mix. The in-state recruit chose the Spartans out of high school. Last season he had 53 tackles and four interceptions and could be an ideal replacement for the injured Rod Moore.
Another recruiting miss for the Michigan Wolverines
We talked about the need to ramp up NIL, or at least pay for play, following the loss of Marquise Davis to Kentucky. It was obvious why that went down like it did.
Many Michigan football fans were holding out hope that Bo Jackson, a four-star running back from Ohio would commit. However, Jackson posted on X Thursday night that he's taking three official visits and none include the Michigan Wolverines. He will visit Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia, which seems to effectively elminate U-M from the running.
It's another gut punch. It's also a reminder that Michigan football needs to get away from the "transformational" approach to NIL. It helped keep some really talented players in Ann Arbor, but if this was a few years ago and Michigan was using the same approach, it wouldn't have gotten those players and unless this changes, the talent is going to drop off. That's just a fact of life.
In-state recruit Avery Gach is announcing his commitment this afternoon and that should go the way of the Michigan Wolverines, so it's not all bad. But landing top-100 recruits will continue to be difficult unless the Wolverines evolve on NIL. They don't have to be Miami, but acting like the Ivy League isn;t working either.

it's way too early to care about the 2025 NCAA tournament, but, interestingly, Joe Lunardi has Dusty May and Michigan basketball projected in the field as a No. 7 seed.
