Texas native Amy Acker was studied dance throughout her childhood, and moved into acting after a knee surgery in high school. During college, she won accolades for her theater work, and appeared as a model in J. Crew catalogs. She appeared in several small TV roles and a role in the film Catch Me if You Can with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Acker appeared as Fred/Illyria on the Buffy spinoff, Angel and as Fred/Illyria, which won her the 2003 Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress on Television. In 2005, she joined the cast of Alias for its final season. She appeared in Drive, the short-lived drama about people competing in an illegal cross-country road race.

Acker married actor James Carpinello in 2003; they have two children.
