Looking for a Shiba Pup

We are experienced dog owners and looking to add a Shiba to our home after a lot of research. I found this listing and spoke to the seller. She is apparently selling the litter for a family so I have no way of confirming the parents and the home setting. She said she can send pictures of the mom but not sure how much that can be trusted. I 100% do not want a commercially bred dog.

What's your opinion on this puppy? TIA

honestly, I don't think legit breeders would sell through Kijiji.......

There may be but I'd be wary that these are mixed Shiba breeds coming from a backyard breeder or puppymill.

You should be able to visit the breeder;s location, see the parents, see the settings & environment that the parents and puppies are being raised.

We helped our good friend find a purebreed Shiba breeder - they are based out of Quebec and we drove to their home (almost like a farm) - the breeder is also registered with Canadian Kennel Club and we were able to see the parents and the other puppies they had.

Our good friend had to be put on a waitlist and waited a few months for the puppy.....all the while the breeder was providing updates etc...

I'll find out from my wife the exact name of the Quebec Shiba breeder - it wasn't cheap either....

I totally agree and share the same sentiments. Deep in my mind I already know this puppy isn't right, but I'm trying to fight the urges of having one. It's definitely a purchase we do not want to jump into.

A lot of reputable breeders I found are on 2-4 year wait list or not breeding at all.

Not sure if it's the same CKC breeder in Quebec but we also reached out to one and apparently they had 2 litters that already sold but said they're expecting a 3rd in a few months, which kind of raises concerns that they are breeding for strictly profit (puppymill).

I wouldn’t make this sort of decision based on the photos and the little info contained in the Kijiji ad. Also, there are three puppies in that series of photos...which one is the one up for sale?

It's the one in the first 3 photos.

I received a very poor quality video of her and I'm concerned she's mixed. The tail is very straight and not curled at all (event thought it's wagging). I dont have any pictures of the rear at all. I want to be sure she's worth visiting (she's not) as she's 4hrs away.

lol no, Shiba's seems like a breed that's good for us. We're looking for a small/med sized dog, minimal grooming, independent and a dog that requires a lot of respect and patience as we're trying to teach our son the importance of this and responsibilities.

Shiba does shed (shed heavily twice a year) but they do not need to go to the groomer regularly. You can bath a shiba at home if you train it properly. I hope your son isn't too young. Shiba does need some good training. And they were hunting dogs. So they do chase and has high prey drive.

Typically they are loyal to a single owner.

My parents had a shiba inu about 20 years ago. The shiba passed away when he was 16/17 years old. He was ONLY loyal to my mom. Though he accepted food from my dad as well.
But he is very protective to his food area while he's eating. So be really careful with your kid.

Anyway, find a good breeder. If you can see the parents of the puppy, it's easier to find one with good temperament. These little guys stay around for a long time, so do not do impulsive purchase.

As much as my mom's dog being a bully and didn't let me pet him sometimes when I visited, I still love this little brother.

shoppingBear is correct. We had a friend who used to come by a lot and bring his Shiba with him.

I would wait until Covid-19 has passed (if it ever does). It is important that you see the pup and connect with him/her. And there will be a lot of pups available as things return to what will be the new normal - I hope I am wrong, but I doubt it. Yes, breeders have long waiting lists and many are not breeding during the pandemic.

I definitely would not buy a pup from the link you provided. And by the way, the Shiba who used to visit had a somewhat curly tail. He also liked our dog which was very helpful! We are also very experienced dog parents.

I got my shiba inu back in September 2019. Mother and Father was on site to see / interact with. Breeder is in Tillsonburg. Price was $1,500 (pre-covid price).. have seen kijiji listings of the same breeder recently for pups for sale for $3,000.
I was able to meet the pup and see his siblings.. I didnt choose my shiba.. he chose me.

Known as the cat of the dog world.. Very independent.. spends a lot of time grooming... Very stubborn... Very smart. Mine is afraid of squeaky toy..
He sheds heavily two times a year... He hates baths. Love Kraft Singles.. his favorite treat. took a year before he cuddled with me.. they typically don't...

He only barks when he is super excited.. he also jumps and twirls a 360 spin when he's excited..
He has recently started squeaking.. he's trying to talk to me..

Pre-covid, it took me 3 months to find the right black/tan/white male pup, when demand was a lot less.
Be patient, and find the one that picks you!

He has a curly tail.. all purebread shibas do.

Thanks for everyone's inputs and sharing your experiences.

We got really lucky and a shiba breeder who is also a professional trainer / fresh food provider recently had a litter. One he sold, the owners found out shes severely allergic and referred us to them - in fact, one he had wanted to keep because she's the best looking pup he's had. Breeder was very sincere and passionate with nothing to gain since he already sold her. We'll be taking her tomorrow at 11 weeks. The parents are beautiful and so is the puppy. We're super excited to have Mochi join our family!

I saw their FB when I was researching. 2020 post mentioned 4 year wait time!

And sharing an odd response I received from a local breeder registered breeder. They mentioned while they don't have any available ATM, they do import and resell puppies regularly..

As for Mochi, I can already see her stubborn and independent personality. There should be no issues bonding with me since I'm her primary caregiver, but I will need to work very hard to ensure she bonds with my son.

I'm gonna have to work hard to get him to bond with my 4 yr old son, who thinks he just got a new toy!

Congrats on your new puppy! Shiba's adorable face is so deceiving lol I bring her everywhere and she attracts so much attention. Our son is 4yo as well and he's the same - constantly chasing her around the house playing "rescuebot" and his new backyard digging partner in crime...

Ours is coming around and starting to adjust and becoming more affectionate. They're so intelligent and she already learned a few commands in the 2 weeks we've had her.

You should DL the Petsmart app and play the game to get the 15/20/25% off coupons. It applies to even discounted items. We've been fully taking advantage of this.

Here's her in her new Kong crate. Very well built and I fully recommend. The Amazon one that the owners gave is nowhere comparable.

Thanks for the petsmart tip. Will totally get on that. Akira is a head-turner too. Everyone in the neighborhood stops to greet him. Dogs want to as well but he doesn't have all his shots yet.

We have the kong crate as well and he practically lives in it cuz he sleeps so much. Another life saver recommended by my nephew is the bully stick. Expensive but any time he starts biting on anything, we give him the stick and he loves it.
Mochi looks a lot like Akira right now. Akira is Sesame but looks red in most pics.

Unpopular post I am sure but for everyone looking to get a dog, PLEASE consider adopting and not shopping. For every dog that is bred and bought, another dog in the shelter or rescued loses a chance at a new life.

There are SO MANY puppies and dogs that need new homes. All types of dogs. Purebreds, mixed breeds, puppies, senior dogs big and small. Please adopt and don’t shop.

Not only is this not the thread for it, but this is not true. Even before the pandemic there were no puppies available in Vancouver found through routine adoption. Currently they're selling them online for about $3,000 because nobody can get them elsewhere and wait lists are years long from reputable breeder. As for getting dogs, this is also impossible - especially a small one. Shelters are almost empty and most dogs currently are being shipped in from other parts of the world, this method of acquiring dogs for adoption is also suffering a huge shortage due to the pandemic.

I don’t live in Vancouver but if you say that shelters are empty there, I am truly elated. There are other means other than shelters to look for dogs that need a home. Rescue agencies work tirelessly to save dogs from deplorable living conditions, rescuing them off the street or even worse on meat farms. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of dogs to be rescued. You are right that COVID has put a huge roadblock for rescuing dogs overseas but it is still being done albeit at a slower pace.

All I am trying to say is that there are so many other options other than buying a dog. And I hope whoever looks at this thread contemplating buying a dog will seriously consider adoption (petfinder.com is a good place to start if anyone is interested). If I can change one person’s mind about adoption, then it is one dog that I may have potentially saved.

Karala is correct. And the situation applies to all of Canada. @ohfive has written the same post before so I really don't know what he/she is thinking.

We want a senior dog that we would actually be able to meet and have OUR Vet perform an exam - emphasis on OUR Vet. It would be best if the pup had been under our vet clinic's care since a puppy - that way we would know any health issues going in. A puppy or young dog at this point in our lives would not be a good idea, especially considering our ages and our views on the dog definitely reigning supreme in the household - and not outliving us - I know that accidents happen but as a general rule. Our vet is on the lookout for a suitable dog and has been for 5 months. I am not expecting a dog. And during these Covid times it is very difficult.

In the U.S. there are a lot of pups of all ages available for adoption - the same in Turkey, Egypt, Romania etc. In Canada no, not at the present time. The "rescues" bring them in - although those from the U.S. are at the moment reduced in quantity available. Rescues and the Human Society get 1000s of applications for dogs. Many come not as described from rescues - you really need to know how to read between the lines. I greatly fear what will happen to all of the pandemic puppies once people go back to work. We are both retired but we always had dogs when we worked - they slept much of the day and frankly got quite bothered by having to supervise us if we happened to be home. Weekends were different, they knew by what we wore that it was the weekend.

What I will never understand, and I have said it before, why a personal reference is better than 4 vet references (all from the same practice), two RVTs, the vet office manager, 2 specialists, a dog groomer, you name it. Many applications read that they "might" contact your vet - "might"?

Rescues will not allow adoptions into families with young children. We feel the same way as rescues are unpredictable. If you're posting this as an option, you should already know the exclusions.

@blanche123 if you're looking for a senior/adult, have a look at redemption paws. It's a foster/adoption network.
