Kernel Panics after updating to macOS 10.15.5 and external display no longer works

Hi I have just updated to 10.15.5 hoping to fix the bug where my external display would not wake when my 2019 Macbook Pro 16 inch woke from sleep. However after installing the update I have had 5 crashes in 1 hour and my laptop no longer recognises my external display, or TV. I have pasted one of the crashes reports below, any one else experiencing this, its extremely frustrating.

Its weird as I didn't have any issues with my external display before I updated (other than not waking from sleep every now and then) now I can't even use an external display!

I am having the same thing. Note that I have an early 2019 MacBook Pro, Vega 20, with 3 monitors. I upgraded from Mojave today thinking everything should be fine. Everything works but crashes 10 minutes into the screen saver. I have had 10+ crashes this evening. I cannot let it idle too long.

I updated my wife's 2018 MacBook Pro and she has no issues. Hers is connected to 2 monitors. Im thinking its a Vega issue since hers doesn't have it.

I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC, Combo update, Safe mode, etc. and this issue is still present. When the crash happens, there will be a split second where the fans goes what appears to be at full speed right before the crash. At this point the power button has to be pressed to get it back up. Every time there is a crash that MacBook is HOT.

I installed Amphetamine to keep the system active and I've been crash free for about an hour. I should of stayed on Mojave and may downgrade back to it.

2018 MBP here. Since upgrading my MBP has been running extremely hot almost all the time. 10.15.4 was fine. Anyone else?

If you downgrade let us know how you go. There are indications here on the apple communities 19 pages that the firmware upgrade that has been happening with each Catalina minor update also results in unresponsive monitors when you downgrade. The down grade will not change back to the earlier firmware.

The Apple Community forums have 3 or 4 threads surround sleep wake failure especially on 16 inch MACs. New installs have not been helping at all and they are reverting to returning the MAC for refunds as Apple have not resolved the issue in months. Here is one but you can find a number wth many more than 7 pages on the Apple Forum.

Hi. I came here to create my own post, but then I saw this one, and I figured I would just pile one. My 16" MacBook Pro on Catalina is the most unstable Mac I have ever owned. I definitely had all of the wake from sleep issues, kernel panics, etc. The primary way I use this laptop is attached to an external monitor, and it rarely works. Sometimes the monitor turns on. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it kernel panics. I've tried different USB-C hubs, thinking that was the issue. Nope. I was hoping that the most recent Catalina update would fix the problem. Nope. Just getting worse. I have to use my Chromebook now, as that one works plugged into an external monitor. I'm so annoyed. If anyone from Apple is reading this, I can drop off my laptop in Cupertino. I live nearby. I don't need it, since it's so useless right now. Plz return it once these bugs are fixed. So annoying that my $3K MacBook Pro can't even use an external monitor properly, but my Pixelbook works great.

Does anyone know how to get the 10.15.4 or 10.15.1 .app install file, i can only find the .dmg versions and they don't allow you to make a bootable usb drive?

I have tried a 2nd IXTEND T3 USB C HUB and that does not work either, however a cheap Chinese straight HDMI to USB C adapter with nothing else IS WORKING. Note that all of the usb C hubs do work perfectly with my machine before the 10.15.5 update and they all still work perfectly with my 2018 Macbook Air running Mojave

Sorry to hear that. That same thread pointed to has a potential solution around needing to wait at least 30 minutes and eventually the screen may show up and work. Thanks for feedback that once you update the firmware there is no going back.

Kernel Panics started to show on 10.15.4. Disabled power nap works until they released 10.15.5. Most users inform that problem still exists and what is worse you can fix it with power nap on/off. I know it is frustrating. I also had kernel panic on previous Mac. Now I have new one with 10.15.3 on board and I won't go anywhere until it will be safe. But if we want them to work hard on this we have to call them or send feedback.

I'm getting a crash and kernel panic whenever my 2019 16" MBP goes into sleep mode IF an external monitor is connected AND the lid is closed. This happens since upgrading from 10.15.3 to 10.15.5.
Super frustrating, and disappointing that test coverage of macOS releases is apparently so bad.

Is there any indication that 10.15.6 BETA solves this problem?

Since quite a long time, my Mac didn't wake up here and then, when my external display (EIZO CX7210) ist connected. But that was maybe one a week and only when I connected the display to my Thunderbolt 3 dock. As I connected the USB-C -> Display Port cable directly to the MBP, this problem disappeared.

Then, maybe 1 to 2 months ago, the Error with the Sleeping transition

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800b29169c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change callbacks. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x1512c.

started to occur. First sporadically, maybe every fourth or fifth time, the Mac went to sleep. During the last weeks it got worse and worse. With the latest minor update of 10.15.5 it's a pure disaster. Nearly every time the Mac goes to sleep, I have to hardreset the device, as the screen remains black. Sometimes I can still hear Spotify playing music, but I can't return to the OS from the black screen, no matter if I open the (usually closed) MBP or not.

Additionally, my Mac sometimes reboots with this error. This happens maybe once a week. I don't know if there is any context between the two :

What I tried to solve the problem:

• Use different connections to the external display: USB-C to Displayport, USB-C to HDMI, connected directly to the MBP or via the TB Dock. I tried a Displayport -> Displayport from the DP Port of my dock to the display. I tried different Thunderbolt docks (legato thunderbolt 3 and call digit TS+)
• Use the Mac without external display. With this approach, it got much better, nevertheless the errors still occurred, but much less frequently.
• Set up another admin user
• Reset NVRAM, PRAM, SMC
• Make a clean install on another partition
• Install Windows 10 under Bootcamp (here I had no issues, what makes me quite confident, that it is NOT a hardware issue)
• Made a clean install of my whole system, after deleting the complete hard disk and its partitions.
• Had a call with the apple support. (in between all these approaches)

I'm getting really frustrated. I'd like to send it to apple to exclude, that it is really a hardware issue, but I can't and won't do without my Mac for 3 to 4 weeks, as I', convinced, that it's a software bug, as these problems mainly occur with the 16" MBP, but also with other devices. And as it got worse with the last updates.

I'm really looking back 20 years ago, when a Mac was a stable and reliable system. This status get's lost more and more in small steps.

Its not you, its your Mac OS. Unfortunately there is a thread on apple community here thats about 300 messages long and with about 30k views all trying to resolve the same problem. Its really not you, its just your Mac. And if not the external display then there is a 500 odd message thread on the kernel panics.

this morning I wake up and it’s off. Turn it on and says it’ll take 42 minutes. Ok I wait and thn the fan was going at 100%and external monitor would not work.

went to Apple site they said it’s the motherboard or battery to replace. Hundreds of euro.

Most expensive paperweight I ever bought, praying somebody has an update.
