Barred Owl

Barred Owl – Photo by Alice Mary Herden

Witnessing a bird of prey hunting and feeding on its prey is a rare and fascinating sight for me. However, I remain emotionally detached from the scene as I understand that it is simply following its natural instincts to survive.

Barred Owls are usually silent creatures. They tend to perch quietly while listening intently for even the slightest sound and keeping a watchful eye on the movements in the understory.

In wildlife photography, being in the right place at the right time is the common response, and that was precisely the case for me when I witnessed this moment.

While some might see it as a great opportunity to capture some fantastic photos, that wasn’t my primary goal. For me, photography is more than just capturing a great shot. It’s about learning and observing the behavior of the subject I am photographing. In this case, I had the chance to observe and capture the owl’s behavior and movements in its natural habitat. As I watched the owl carefully, I noticed how it squints its eyes when it uses its nictitating membrane, how it grasps its claws, tears, and pulls with its sharp beak. However, what interests me most is its curiosity and what caught the Barred owl’s attention. I couldn’t hear anything, and when I looked to where it was staring, I saw nothing. Barred owls have such an acute sense of hearing and sight that for me to hear or see anything would be impossible.

Nonetheless, the experience was still exhilarating, and I felt privileged to have witnessed such a beautiful and rare moment.

  1. What a wonderful experience!
These are such magnificent birds. You really had a special opportunity to see one in action. We hear them often as we explore, see them occasionally and only very rarely get to enjoy a moment like yours.

    Thank you for sharing.
