Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Barret Wallace Character Information

The leader of an independent Avalanche cell, Barret spearheads an operation to take down Shinra's mako reactors. He pays a hefty price for this, however, when the company retaliates, and his comrades die in the crossfire. Armed with the memories of his lost friends and the newfound knowledge of Sephiroth's plans, he departs Midgar in hope of saving the planet and safeguarding a future for his daughter Marlene. What he lacks in speed, he makes up for in both sturdiness and strength, converting his anger toward Shinra into raw firepower. He employs a variety of ranged attacks, from rapid-fire salvos to powerful explosions, which allow him to strike foes high in the air or across the battlefield.

Early Life

Barret was born and grew up in a small, coal-mining village that is surrounded by a forest called Corel. Over the years of living and working in the village, he married a woman named Myrna, who, unfortunately, suffered and died from an unknown illness. Due to the loss of his wife, Barret dedicated himself to becoming an advocate for mako energy and helped Shinra in building a Mako Reactor located north of Corel - he convinced his childhood friend Dyne to work with him, who disagreed at first.

At some point, an original group of violent mercenaries who called themselves AVALANCHE broke into the reactor and claimed it. Barret then helped the Turks sneak into the facility to reclaim it. During the encounter, Shinra then decided to destroy the reactor as well as the village of Corel since they believed that it was the villagers of Corel who aided AVALANCHE in taking the reactor. Barret and Dyne then rushed back into town and were chased and gunned down by Shinra soldiers, during the chase, Dyne falls off a cliff and Barret rushed in to grab his hand - hoping to save his best friend from falling, a Shinra executive named Scarlet steps in and shoots off both of their hands and Barret drops Dyne.

Barret who was able to escape and return to the village; finds Dyne's daughter named Marlene, takes her, and decides to raise the girl as his own. Soon, he acquired a prosthetic gun-arm that was made specifically for him by a soldier and scientist named Shalua Rui. He then went off on an expedition to learn about the incident that occurred in Corel where he learned about the group, AVALANCHE. Barret then decided to become the leader of the reincarnated organization and started his campaign against Shinra in Midgar.

Barret can effectively fulfill the role of a tank, boasting the highest HP and Vitality in the game, as well as having access to Steelskin (which reduces damage taken) and Lifesaver (which redirects damage taken by party members to him). His flaws lie in very limited mobility, being the slowest character in the game in terms of movement speed as well as speed attribute, with his dodge roll covering little range. He also has the lowest magic and spirit in the game, making him poor as a spellcaster (although this can be remedied with some Weapons that increase his magic attack power).

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Barret Wallace Lore

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

Barret Wallace spearheads AVALANCHE's infiltration of the Shinra facility in Midgar in order to destroy a single Mako Reactor. He enlists Cloud, a mercenary swordsman referred to him by Tifa, to join the assault alongside their team - Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie. While setting up the bomb, Barret discusses with Cloud the repercussions of Shinra's impact on the planet's energy. Unbeknownst to them, President Shinra orders to sabotage their campaign by amplifying the explosion themselves, without a care for the innocent civilians and collateral damage. Following a tense standoff with Shinra mechs, they narrowly escape the reactor's self-destruction. Undeterred, Barrett persists in their goal to dismantle additional reactors, despite the unintended consequences. Rallying the team, Barret emphasizes the necessity of sacrifices to continue their mission. Later, in Sector 7 Undercity, Barret faces opposition to AVALANCHE's cause but returns with everyone to Seventh Heaven, run by Tifa, where he reunites with his daughter, Marlene.

After gathering the remaining payment for Cloud's services, Barret calls the team over at the bar to discuss their next operation to destroy the next Mako Reactor. Tifa admits to him that she's not fully on board with the bombings, as she believes that there has to be a better way to advocate for their principles. When asked, she confesses her disapproval, as Barret gives Cloud his pay, telling him he won't be hired for their next operation, while Tifa will be needed despite her apprehensions. He then asks Cloud to leave the bar as they have a private celebration for their recent success, AVALANCE-members only.

The calm before the next operation carries over the next day until it's abruptly disturbed by swarms of wraiths attacking the bar. Previously it was shown that only Aerith and then eventually Cloud can see them. However, it seems like everyone else can see them this time around. Their physical attacks prove ineffective against the enigmatic beings, who only disappear after they cause Jessie to sprain her ankle. Sadly, this means that Jessie cannot join them for the next operation, as well as Wedge who'll be guarding her, leading Barret to employ Cloud's services again.

Following the group’s issuance of a bomb threat, Barret joins Tifa and Cloud, and together they board a train amid increased Shinra security. Together, they manage to halt the train and the group continues to infiltrate Reactor 5 on foot, sabotaging it. Eventually, Heidegger, Shinra's Head of Security, reveals himself as a hologram and boats about broadcasting their sabotage, sparking public outrage against them. He also threatens the group with Shinra’s Airbuster prototype which Barrett insists on sabotaging. After successfully sabotaging it, Cloud leads the group out when they are stopped by a gigantic hologram of President Shinra who recognizes Cloud's SOLDIER status and predicts his short life. He dismisses Barrett's accusations of draining the planet's resources, blaming AVALANCHE and Wutai instead. As if to further land a devastating blow, Heidegger’s hologram returns as he exposes AVALANCHE’s pawn status in their grand scheme by showing how they had tampered with their bomb from their first mission and made it more destructive. Through hearing Tifa’s fury, a memory of when he failed Tifa is triggered within Cloud before they destroy the Airbuster together. The resulting explosion separates Cloud from Tifa and Barret. Ever brave, Cloud insists they go on ahead, assuring them he'll be fine. Barret acknowledges his misjudgment about Cloud and takes the worried Tifa with him back to Sector 7.

Later, Yuffie, a ninja from Wutai, is shown spotting Tifa and Barret regrouping with Biggs in Sector 7 ultimately overhearing their conversation. Barret tells Tifa and Biggs that Cloud would be alright. Upon hearing Biggs urging Barret to stay covert from Don Corneo’s men, Tifa decides to investigate why they are searching for Barret. Later on, Yuffie's team faces off against Corneo's henchmen, who push Nayo to become Corneo's bride. Despite a scuffle, they back off Nayo upon learning of Tifa's willingness to go with them instead.

At some point, the group learns of the Shinra's plans to let the entire Sector 7 plate drop, to destroy AVALANCHE along with the slums under it, and make way for a new project. Barret's group engages the corporation's troops and operatives to try and prevent the worst-case scenario. Rushing to catch up to the scene, Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith find them in a losing battle against Shinra when specters emerge, blocking their path and delaying their help. Upon finally arriving later on, AVALANCHE is nearly decimated, witnessing Wedge's fall and Biggs being shot. Tifa supports the group while asking Aerith to take Marlene to safety at her bar. While an injured Wedge persuades Shinra soldiers to permit citizen evacuation. Meanwhile, Aerith pursues her mission of saving Marlene, as Tifa forges on with Cloud to help AVALANCHE.

Tifa and Cloud discover Jessie's tragic fate being crushed by debris. Despite their efforts during a duel, Reno initiates the plate separation sequence. While clashing with the Turks, they're obstructed by specters, allowing the Turks to escape. Tseng contacts them about having an ‘Ancient’ revealed to be Aerith in their custody, while Aerith uses the opportunity to communicate Marlene's safety. Facing utter defeat,  the group witnesses Shinra's devastating actions, surviving the disaster. Moments after the destruction, Tifa and Cloud reunite as they console a defeated Barret and ensure Marlene's safety with Aerith. They navigate Wall Market until they discover and secure Marlene with Elmyra in Aerith’s home where Elmyra discloses Aerith's Ancient lineage and asks for patience regarding Aerith's capture. Tifa agrees and the group returns to Sector 7, where they aided in search and rescue, and discovered Wedge in a hidden Shinra facility. Amidst the chaos, they confront escaped experiments, revealing Shinra's inhumane human testing when Specters materialize again and intervene, transporting them outside, where Tifa provides solace to Barret over the loss of Jesse and Biggs. Cloud explains the danger Hojo poses to Aerith. Bringing Wedge to Elmyra's home for rest, Cloud discusses their discovery: evidence of Shinra's ongoing unethical experiments. He emphasizes the danger Aerith faces while Hojo, the callous chief scientist, remains with Shinra. That night, Cloud and his comrades feel uneasy. He notices Barrett outside as he reflects on the other members of his AVALANCHE  team, expressing gratitude for each of their unique contributions. Tifa is comforted by Cloud outside as she cries over losing her home and newfound family. While resting later on, Cloud believes he sees Aerith, but he dismisses it as a dream. She shares a childhood memory of living in the Shinra Building. Cloud expresses concern for Aerith, but she warns him against falling in love with her, claiming that any feelings are not genuine. Attempting to reach out to her apparition, Cloud vows to rescue her, and she appreciates his resolve before he wakes.

The following morning, Cloud tells the group about feeling Aerith's presence calling to him. They decide to rescue Aerith immediately, with Barret feeling a debt of gratitude toward her for saving Marlene. Later, Kyrie, a troublemaker, spreads a false rumor from above that aggravates Barret. The rumor suggests Wutai is supporting AVALANGE, implying that the terrorists serve foreign interests. In their attempt to reach the surface, they consider revisiting Corneo. Instead, they encounter Leslie, who extends his assistance after they have aided him in seeking vengeance against the Don for his fiancée's abduction. However, Leslie's revenge plot takes an unexpected turn when the Don reveals that Shinra traced the plate drop leak back to him, forcing him into hiding. He also discloses Shinra's willingness to proceed with the plan due to their intent to abandon Midgar and create what they perceive as a quasi-paradise. After the group prevents Leslie from facing imminent execution, an unexpected intervention occurs when the Don's monstrous pet saves him, enabling his escape. Despite being unable to pursue him immediately, Leslie aids the group by facilitating their passage over the wall and equipping them with potent grappling guns to continue their ascent.

As they arrive at Shinra HQ, they notice increased security. Tifa's hacking attempt for the group to reach Hojo’s lab on the 65th floor fails mysteriously. Instead, they use the elevator to reach the 59th floor to confront Hojo, encountering employees en route. While overhearing Shinra's plans, they learn about the Ancients in a presentation. As they press on, they encounter another one of Sephiroth's illusions, where they witness disturbing visions of the future involving Sephiroth, Jenova, and Cloud.

The group embarks on a guided tour through exhibits delving into the president, Shinra's directors, and their roles. A virtual reality presentation unfolds the history of the Ancients, their ability to wield Materia, and their civilization's demise from a meteor strike 2000 years ago. Another simulated video depicts Midgar's destruction by a meteor and a false vision of Sephiroth attacking Tifa. Simultaneously, Director Palmer is shocked by a vision of Sephiroth passing by while the group worries about the meteor’s foreshadowing of such a horrific future. Summoned by Mayor Domino, they discover he aided in their infiltration, concealing their presence, and assisting their path within the building. Mayor Domino, an internal supporter of AVALANCHE, voices frustration as a powerless mayor manipulated by Shinra and offers assistance in reaching Hojo's lab to strike against the corporation. In this endeavor, they connect with another informant working within the mayor's network, who informs them about the upcoming Directors' meeting.

While attempting to listen in on Shinra's plans, Cloud unexpectedly encounters a Shinra Security officer who recalls meeting him during their basic training. Surprisingly, the officer expresses relief at seeing Cloud alive, debunking rumors of his demise along with others. He promises to contact their mutual SOLDIER acquaintance, Kunsel. During this encounter, Cloud experiences another headache, which catches Tifa's attention, but he swiftly disregards it and proceeds. They then witness President Shinra discussing with Heidegger the dissemination of the conspiracy theory linking Avalanche with Wutai, seeking an update on its circulation. Crawling through ducts, they witness employees in despair. At an executive meeting, President Shinra dismisses reconstruction efforts. He authorizes Hojo to extract cooperation from Aerith for the Neo-Midgar project. Hojo suggests using SOLDIERs for Aerith's breeding.

Later, the group finally confronts Hojo in his lab urging him to release Aerith but are ambushed by lab mutants. Afterwards, they finally find Aerith. While Hojo aims to gather combat data from them, his attention shifts to Cloud upon recognition, as he reveals that Cloud is not a member of SOLDIER as believed. But before Hojo can elaborate, specters intervene, seizing the scientist and taking him away abruptly. Amid the chaos, Barret promptly frees Aerith, expressing gratitude for her earlier assistance in saving Marlene. While endeavoring to stop Hojo's escape, another creature is liberated but fails to prevent Hojo's departure. Aerith communicates with the creature, reassuring the group of its friendly nature. To everyone's surprise, the creature is capable of speech. Refusing to disclose its real name, the creature adopts the designation Hojo gave it - Red XIII. Meanwhile, Cloud seems entranced, sensing something ominous ahead. He mentions the name "Jenova," referring to it as "Mother," before collapsing. Cloud awakens in Aerith's former room, where she discloses that she belongs to the Cetra lineage, descendants of the Ancients, and even openly admits her inability to guide anyone to the promised land. Just as she was about to continue, their conversation gets disrupted again by the specters, known as Whispers, according to Red XIII. He explains that these beings are guardians of destiny, intervening when individuals attempt to reshape their fate, ensuring events follow their predetermined path. Tifa ponders whether this implies their lives are predetermined, and Red XIII confirms that indeed, the planet dictates the course of their existence from birth till death.

Barret expresses doubt at this, questioning how Red XIII could possess such knowledge. Red XIII explains that when Aerith touched him, he gained insights about the Whispers. Aerith clarifies that while Shinra is part of the issue, they aren't the true adversaries. She senses a greater menace, but each encounter with a Whisper causes her to lose fragments of herself, leaving her feeling disoriented, as if navigating a maze. Eventually, a message from the Mayor, accompanied by Wedge, reveals that AVALANCE's main headquarters is launching an attack on Shinra HQ to draw out the President. Despite the heightened security, there's a rooftop path leading to an AVALANCE chopper for their extraction. Red XIII opts to assist those still battling, while Cloud is intrigued by a misplaced black feather. Eventually, they confront a being introduced by Aerith as Jenova. Amid escalating discomfort, Cloud witnesses Sephiroth's arrival, triggering memories of Sephiroth's plan to conquer with his mother, Jenova. He also glimpses a younger, grieving Tifa, wielding Sephiroth's sword in fury. As Tifa attempts to console Cloud, she too shares his vision of Sephiroth. Uncertain of reality, Cloud charges forward, leading to a clash with Sephiroth, who easily throws him aside.

Meanwhile, Hojo revels in the validation of his Reunion theory, throwing more experiments at the group while staying ahead of them. They encounter Chadley, who discloses being a Hojo-made cyborg but thanks them for aiding his quest for freedom from Hojo's control. With gathered data, Chadley offers them a way to break free from Hojo's grasp. As they attempt simulations, including classified ones like Weiss, Chadley expresses gratitude and departs for an uncertain future. They head towards the President's office, confronting Sephiroth. Sephiroth kills President Shinra, leading to a battle. Whispers disrupt the battle as Barret charges at Sephiroth but swiftly gets impaled with the elite SOLDIER's katana. Cloud glimpses Sephiroth leaving with Jenova's body, prompting their pursuit. In the midst of these events, a Whisper resurrects Barret, with Red XIII explaining that it wasn't his time to die. Despite the group's attempt to apprehend Sephiroth, they encounter another robed figure, similar to one from Sector 5. Their pursuit is interrupted as the Turks shoot down their rescue chopper, introducing Rufus Shinra, the former Vice President. Cloud engages Rufus while Aerith, Barret, and Red XIII face challenges within the building. Cloud arrives on a motorcycle to rescue the group, leading them onto the highway. Meanwhile, the Whispers envelop the Shinra building, causing chaos. Sephiroth manipulates events, intending to alter destiny. Aerith asserts they must halt Sephiroth, warning that changing fate could profoundly affect them. As they confront Sephiroth, a colossal Whisper, the Harbinger, arises, creating an otherworldly realm. They encounter manifestations of a future timeline, rejecting the destined outcome. Sephiroth summons a meteor, but Aerith's intervention stops it, leading to a showdown.

In a surreal space, Cloud suffers intense headaches until Sephiroth's touch relieves his pain. Sephiroth proposes joining forces to challenge destiny, but Cloud refuses. Their confrontation intensifies, involving the group and Sephiroth aided by the Whispers. Eventually, they break free from the Whispers' influence. Cloud finds himself in an unknown place, experiencing more disturbances. Sephiroth's cryptic message triggers reality's return, unveiling a changed Midgar. As reality resumes, Zack survives, lifting a dome of light over Midgar, and Biggs awakens. Elsewhere, Yuffie determines to form an anti-Shinra squad. Cloud and the group decide to pursue Sephiroth, and Aerith glimpses two diverging timelines, contemplating Zack's arrival in Midgar. Zack heads to Aerith's church but discovers a different scene, puzzling him. United, the group follows Cloud and hitchhikes with Chocobo Bil reaching the vicinity of Kalm. They continue on, this time accompanied by Red XIII, as Cloud resolves alongside them to pursue Sephiroth, marking the continuation of their mysterious journey.
