Hothouse Flowers (1987 Acoustic)

hothouse flowers

Hearing the Hothouse Flowers on Ian Dempsey’s TodayFM breakfast show yesterday with Ian reminiscing about the Mother Records releases got me wondering if I had any early Hothouse Flowers tracks on tape. The best I came up with was this acoustic version of ‘Don’t Go’ that Dave played in his 1987 review of Irish music. I thought I had an early recording of ‘Love Don’t Work This Way’ with Maria Doyle so if I find it I’ll post that too. I’ll spare you a full band bio as they should be sufficiently well known, formed in 1985 by Liam Ó Maonlaí, Fiachna Ó Braonáin and Peter O’Toole and much feted by Hot Press they released their first single ‘Love Don’t Work This Way’ in May 1987 on Mother Records.

Don’t Go (acoustic) (1987)

Welcome to readers from the Hothouse Flowers Forum. I am not Dave Fanning despite my pinching his photo. Apologies for the false alarm with Maria McKee! TodayFM have kindly uploaded footage of the Hothouse Flowers visit to their blog or you can watch it here:

Maria Doyle also featured in further Mother Records releases with husband Kieran Kennedy in The Black Velvet Band.

  1. Hi,

Do you have any more rare sessions ?

  2. A version with Maria McKee??? Would love love love to hear that.

I have the video of the original version with Maria Doyle Kennedy.

Hope you find this lost track with McKee, that would be keen to hear.

Doh! I was hoping no-one would spot that slip before I corrected it. You are correct Bee, it was of course Maria Doyle Kennedy!

  4. Hi,
Do you have any recordings of the band in their early days before they released LDWTW. I think they may have had someone else on drums/bass before Jerry and Peter.
Also do you know of anyone who has a copy of the point depot show leading up to the New Year, was it yourself who was a presenter introducing and ending the TV show that broadcast it.

  5. Fanning Sessions Says:

    Have added another track here.

Maria McKee, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Katel Keineg all sing backing vocals on Fergus O’Farrells song Rosemarie from debut interference album in 1995…just saying !!
