Sufjan Stevens after Beyoncé's Grammy snub: 'Don't be racist'

Add Sufjan Stevens to the list of people who feel that the Grammys have failed to properly recognize Beyoncé’s artistic accomplishment.

A day after Beyoncé claimed the award for best urban contemporary album but lost to Adele for album, record, and song of the year, Stevens penned a thinly veiled Grammy critique on his Tumblr blog.

Sharing his thoughts in the form of a Q&A, the singer-songwriter said, “Q: WTF is Urban Contemporary’?”

He answered, “It’s where the white man puts the [incomparable] pregnant black woman because he is so threatened by her talent, power, persuasion and potential.”

Stevens also added, “friendly reminder: don’t be racist.”

Though Stevens did not mention the Grammys by name, the show has been criticized over the years for overlooking black artists. (One such artist, Frank Ocean, decided not to submit his recent albums for Grammy consideration as an act of protest.)

At the 59th annual ceremony on Sunday, Adele herself said she felt Beyoncé should have won the night’s top honor for Lemonade. “I felt like it was her time to win,” the British singer told reporters backstage. “My view is, what the f— does she have to do to win album of the year?”
