“You can’t do Ghostbusters without the Ecto-1,” says director Paul Feig in a new vignette promoting the upcoming film. The unique phantom-fighting vehicle is one of the most memorable objects from the Ghostbusters franchise, so getting it right for the reboot was all-important for the cast and crew.

In the original 1984 movie, Dr. Ray Stanz (Dan Aykroyd) finds an old ambulance and modifies it into a ghost-hunting machine. For the new film, Feig wanted to pay homage to this original story and look, but also put his own spin on it. In the 2016 version, Leslie Jones’ character, Patty, borrows a hearse from her uncle’s funeral shop, and Kate McKinnon’s character Jillian turns it into the Ecto-1.

“The original was based on an old ambulance, but this one we found a Cadillac hearse from ’84 and just loved the look of it, loved the sleek lines,” Feig said. “We wanted to make it our own but keep the fun of the original.”

The new Ecto-1 will roll into theaters with Ghostbusters on July 15.
