Muttart Conservatory
The Muttart Conservatory is a botanical garden in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, located across the North Saskatchewan River valley from the downtown core. The conservatory, one of Edmonton's most well-known landmarks, consists of three city-operated greenhouses, public gardens, and four feature pyramids for displaying plant species from three biomes, with the fourth pyramid hosting a seasonal display. The central foyer is illuminated by a fifth minor skylight pyramid.
The Gladys and Merrill Muttart Foundation[3] provided the initial impetus for the conservatory's construction, with the remainder of the funding provided by the Government of Alberta and the City of Edmonton. History of Muttart Conservatory
The Muttart Conservatory is a botanical garden and landmark located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The conservatory is made up of four pyramids that house a variety of plant species from different climate zones around the world. The idea for the Muttart Conservatory was first proposed in the early 1960s by local businessman Grant MacEwan, who envisioned a world-class botanical garden in the heart of Edmonton. The conservatory was named after businessman and philanthropist Francis Winspear Muttart, donated the funds to make the project a reality.
Construction of the conservatory began in 1974, and it officially opened to the public in 1976. The four pyramids were designed by architect Peter Hemingway, who drew inspiration from the pyramid-shaped greenhouses at the Montreal Botanical Garden. Over the years, the Muttart Conservatory has undergone several renovations and updates to improve the visitor experience and showcase new plant collections. In 2009, the conservatory underwent a major renovation that included upgrades to the facility's lighting and heating systems, as well as the addition of new exhibits and programming.
Today, the Muttart Conservatory remains a beloved attraction in Edmonton and a popular destination for visitors of all ages.
