Torquay harbour

Do you want a holiday in Devon without a car, then Torquay is one of the best places to base yourself. Situated at the heart of the English Riviera, Torquay ranks high on the list of destinations for UK holidaymakers. Its long-standing popularity means that there is a lot to see and do, with many of these attractions easily accessible without a car. Rail connections to London and nationwide by train are also good, so once you are here, you will have plenty of choices.

To make things super easy I’ve listed some of the main attractions you can go to without a car in Torquay and nearby Paignton without a car. Starting from the north in Babbacome Bay, following the coast south to Brixham.

Alternatively visit the Tourism Information Office in Torquay Harbour for travel maps and timetable information for train and bus services.

Look out for the open- top bus number 122 that runs along the coast in the summer. If you are likely to use a bus for more than a few days the weekly pass might be a good option for you, ask the driver about the ‘megarider’ for Torquay. It will work out more cost effective for multiple journeys.

Days Out Train & Boat from Torquay | Car Free

If the excellent bus network isn’t enough, or you want to explore further afield the train is an excellent choice from Torquay if you do not have a car. Totnes, Dawlish, Dawlish Warren, and Teignmouth are all easily accessible by train from Torquay. Totnes has a completely different atmosphere from Devon and could be an interesting town to visit, particularly if you are interested in markets and independent shops.

Cruises from Torquay harbour are available for trips to Brixham and Dartmouth – some of these cruises combine with the steam train. Visit the tourist information centre in Torquay harbour for a list of the operators.

Map shows Torquay as indicated by the arrow with nearby easily accessible places of interest. You can reach these destinations by bus, rail or indeed a local sea cruise from Torquay harbour.
